Bank of America Funds make College Fair Trip Possible

For years CNRP and the Bank of America have worked together locally on a host of youth education initiatives dealing with financial literacy and college preparation.

In September, BOA hosted the Atlanta Classic football game in conjunction with 100 Black Men of Atlanta.

In addition to the football game the 100 Black Men invited admission and financial aid officers from a number of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) along with other majority colleges and universities from Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia, to showcase their respective

institutions at this annual, free Fair geared toward high school juniors and seniors. CNRP partnered with the Alpha Educational Leadership Foundation and the 50 Large organization to develop a strategy for attending the event with 40 young men from the Tallahassee Community. With help from the FAMU Educational Talent Search the trip was a huge success.

In addition, the students will be engaged in year-long college preparation. We are assisting students with test preparation for the ACT and SAT along with fee waivers to take the test. All of this has been brought to students by the Bank of America, the Alpha Educational Leadership Foundation, CNRP and Florida A&M University.

CNRP Hosts Luncheon to Honor its ContributorsOn October 26th CNRP observed a very special milestone in it’s history, the 10 year anniversary of the Apalachee Ridge Technology Learning Center. The center was created out of the neighborhood association’s desire to have a central meeting place. It became one of the most successful public / private partnerships that Tallahassee has witnessed. Thousands of residents received numerous benefits from the center’s existence as dozens of community organizations, schools, government officials and corporations bought in to the concept of collective community revitalization. The event was attended by various members of the community including State Representative Alan W i l l i ams , Mayo r John Marks , Commissioners Nancy Miller, Scott Maddox, Akin Akinyemi and CNRP Board Chair Gil Ziffer who hosted the event. Also in attendance where three of the original contributors to CNRP - Rosa Morgan, Debra Thomas and Board Member John Baker. These three sat on a panel and discussed how this unique project came together and became a national model for

success in community building. The group also heard from Executive Director Terrance McNeil and CNRP Founder Steve Meisberg via video. Other notable attendees who received awards for their contributions were the United Way, represented by Board Member Heather Mitchell, Florida Campus Compact / Americorps VISTA represented by Laryn Flikkema, the Comcast Corporation represented by Board Member Stefanie Bowden, and Florida A&M University represented by Sterlin Adams. Also recognized was Mr. Burt Davy of Gorilla Builders

who built the center, donating numerous resources to the completion of this project. The Steve Meisberg award

was presented to the City of Tallahassee for it’s leadership and support in establishing and sustaining the Apalachee Ridge Center.

Other notable attendees where Board Member Johnny Session, Shauna Smith and Karinda Bennett of

TCC, Sylvia Hubbard (DOH), Nicole Everett (TLC), Tomica Archie-Smith, Rick Minor and a host of city employees who were instrumental in the success of the ARTLC. Special thanks to Jeanette Lindsey and Cathy Branch for helping to put this event together.

Student Technology Workshop Takes Off

The FAMU Center for Public Computing has been conducting it’s Student Technology Workshops in conjunction with CNRP. This interactive course is designed to prepare students (and non-students) for academic success by using the latest

computer and Internet technology. In just a short amount of time students will significantly increase their ability to organize, research and present material. This course is a must for anyone looking to raise their level of digital literacy for educational purposes. For more info visit: www.cpcwd.com

In January, CNRP will begin a project with the FAMU Center for Public Computing called the Virtual Study Hall. This project will deploy a video teleconference system so that students can receive homework help, live instruction and interact with collegiate tutors and mentors.

We are working with Leon County Schools, City of Tallahassee Parks and Recreation and the Library Systems from Leon, Gadsden and Jefferson counties to make this project happen. CNRP is providing 20 computers that will serve as access points for students throughout the community.
