Next, the old man made a nose. The nose began to grow longer by itself.

“What is happening here? The more I carve the puppet, the more it

An ocean is a huge body of water. The oceans

of the world cover about 70 percent of the earth’s surface.

Oceans are areas of oceanic crust covered by water. Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean and Arctic Ocean are the five oceans of the world. Together they are often referred to as the World Ocean.

Resources in the OceanOceans are a vast source of alternative energy resources. Most of the conventional fossil fuels are found in the oceans. Renewable energy sources, such as tidal and wave power, are major sources of energy. Ocean floors also have deposits of minerals and other elements.

OceanographySeveral physical, chemical and biological processes take place in the oceans. These processes help maintain the structure, motion and life of the oceans. Oceanography is the study of these processes.

Ocean WaterOceans are filled with saline water. Ocean water is a solution of several elements. Gases, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, are found in dissolved states. These gases are essential for the survival of marine animals and plants.

Ocean

A diver exploring the ocean.

F A S T Facts

1. More than 3.5 billion people depend

on the ocean for their food. In 20

years, this number could double to

7 billion.

2. 90 percent of all volcanic activity

occurs in the oceans.

3. Nearly one-third of the world’s oil

comes from the oceans.

4. The deepest point in the ocean is the

Mariana Trench. It is 10.9 km deep.

Quick Reference

• The name ocean is derived from the Greek word Okeanos. The ancient Greeks thought that the ocean was a great river.

• Oceans are rich in plant and animal life. The oceans are home to several organisms, from tiny phytoplanktons to huge blue whales.

• Mammals also live in the oceans. Whales and dolphins are among the hundreds of mammals living in the oceans.

Smallest vs. Largest ProteinProteins generally contain 200 to 300 amino

acids but some proteins are much smaller and

some are much larger. The smallest proteins

are called peptides and the largest is titin. Titin

is found in skeletal and cardiac muscles and

contains 26,926 amino acids in a single chain.

Proteins

Essential vs. Non EssentialAmino AcidsThe human body requires approximately twenty different amino acids. Eight of these

amino acids are known as essential amino acids because they cannot be synthesized in the body. These are isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine,

tryptophan and valine. The human body gets these amino acids from food. The other twelve, known as non essential, are synthesized from these eight amino acids.

Proteins are the building blocks of the body. Proteins make up about 15 percent of the mass of the average person. Most of the fabric in the body is made from protein molecules. Muscle, cartilage, ligaments, skin and hair etc. are mainly protein materials.

Protein molecules play a vital role in keeping our body working properly.

On an average, a person requires 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram

of body weight. Proteins were discovered by Jöns Jakob Berzelius in 1838.

Amino AcidProteins are made up of long chains of amino acids containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. The presence of nitrogen differentiates proteins from carbohydrates and fats. Excess protein intake can put stress on the liver and kidneys.

Complete vs. Incomplete ProteinIf a protein in a food provides all the essential amino acids, it is called a complete protein. If it does not supply all the essential amino acids, it is called an incomplete protein.

A complete protein provides all essential amino acids

Proteins in muscle tissues are generally made up of 200 to 300 amino acids.

The human body needs about twenty different amino acids.

Carol singing is one of the oldest traditions in

Britain. Carols are songs, which celebrate the

joy of Christmas.

During Christmas, a group of people go from

one place to another, singing carols and

collecting money, which is later donated to

poor children.

The best known Christmas carol is Silent

Night, written in 1818 by an Austrian priest

Joseph Mohr. A day before Christmas, he was

told that the church organ is broken and would

not be repaired by Christmas Eve. So, Joseph

wrote three stanzas of the carol that could be

sung by the choir on the guitar music.

Later that night, the people sang Stille Nacht

for the first time. The guitar was the first

instrument on which the carol Silent Night

was played.

BRAcHiOSAURUSBrachiosaurus was one of the tallest and

largest dinosaurs that lived about

156-145 million years ago. It had a long

neck, a small head with nostrils on the top of the head, and a relatively short and thick tail. Brachiosaurus was a herbivore.

1 Draw a small ellipse for the head. Draw a bigger ellipse for the body. Join the two as shown.

2 Add a tiny hump on the head and draw mouth. Then draw a slender long tail.

3 Draw the eyes and four big legs. The front legs should be longer than the hind legs.

4 Add eyes and toenails. Fill dot into the hump as nose. The Brachiosaurus is complete!

You can also try drawing the following

One day a monkey, who lived near a deep, wide brook, wanted to buy some food from the other side of it. But he did not know how to swim. Moments later, he saw a big tortoise swimming in the stream, and an idea crossed his mind. The monkey went near the stream and started praising the tortoise, saying that he was definitely the fastest swimmer.

The tortoise was easily taken in by the words of the monkey, and invited him to sit on his back as he swam in the stream. The monkey readily agreed.

The moment they reached the shore, the monkey leaped up to the bank, laughing, and said, “Actually, you swim as slow as you walk. I will only praised you, because you were of some use to me.”

Moral: Do not trust flatterers.

The Fox and the Grapes

One hot summer day, a fox was strolling through an orchard. While walking, he came to a bunch of grapes, which were ripening on a vine.

‘Ah, these grapes would surely quench my thirst!’ he thought.

So, drawing back a few paces, he took a run and jumped, but just missed the bunch. The fox jumped again and again, but every time his efforts went in vain. At last he gave up and walked away with his nose in the air, saying, “I am sure the grapes are sour.”

Moral: It is easy to despise what you cannot get.
