“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and critically.

Intelligence and Character - that is the goal of education.” Martin Luther King

Character Formation at Loyola Public School

Child is the most precious gift parents receive and they desire to

invest their best -love and care, time and resources- to make the

child grow into a joyful and successful person. Character formation,

along with acquiring knowledge and skills, is important to achieve

this goal. Unlike most other educational institutions, Loyola Public

School focuses on the character formation from day one,

recognizing that the early years in a student’s life are the most

impressionable and that one learns values and virtues as a child. LPS takes the parental

role seriously and the Jesuit management, with the support of the Faculty, aims to

make each student a resourceful and committed citizen.

Obviously, more than being a mere duty, it is the responsibility of everyone in the family

and at school and neighbourhood to make a student understand that good character is

indispensible and that one’s time spent on school-campus offers wonderful opportunities

to acquires the basics of good character. As a classical saying described, “If wealth is

lost, nothing is lost; if health is lost, something is lost; but if character is lost, everything

is lost.” Parents will realize the profound meaning and significance of these words and

how difficult to keep a balance between these values in one’s life. We should always

remember that people respect us even when we lack wealth or good health, but a

person without character is not respected in society.

We can say figuratively that a person of character develops upwards but a person without

character slips downwards in life. A person of strong character goes on to make history

while one without it is marred by history. Persons of virtuous character are the hope,

solace, well-being, peace and inspiration for humankind; those without character cause

trouble, worry and misery to others.

Loyola Public School insists more on values and character formation. At times it could

be boring to talk about morals in the class or outside: however, we insist on this since a

student’s future largely depends on how one is moulded and what values one imbibed.

Moreover, a person of strong character is always fearless. One need not be afraid of

speaking boldly or facing people as he/she knows being honest and speaking truth will

be recognized and appreciated. He/she is loved and respected by all and the genuine

happiness will free one from mental tension which results in enjoying good health as

well. A person with fine character will inspire many in his or her life. “The aim of Jesuit

education is the formation of principled, value-oriented persons for others after the

example of Jesus Christ”.

Rev. Fr. Uvari Antony, S.J,

Principal

Role of Parents in Education

"Since parents have conferred life on their children they have a most

solemn obligation to educate their offsprings. Hence, parents must

be acknowledged as the first and foremost educators of their children.

Their roles as educators is so decisive that scarcely anything can

compensate for their failure in it. For it devolves on parents to create

a family atmosphere so animated with love and reverence for God

and men that a wellrounded personal and social development will be

fostered among the children."

HISTORY OF LPS

LOGO :

“Born for greater things” – ‘Natus Ad Majora’ is the motto of

LPS. Our Monogram and motto signify great ideals. The triangle in the

monogram represents the omnipresence of the Triune God in our lives

which impels us to do great things for the greater glory of God and the

service of our brothers and sisters.

Beginning of the beginning!

Right Rev. Dr. Mummadi, Bishop of Guntur, who was most instrumental in getting

back the Jesuits to Andhra after three centuries and establishing Andhra Loyola College

in Vijayawada wanted to have another institution in Guntur, the seat of his Diocese. His

ardent desire was to have a School for boys run by the Jesuit Fathers to cater to the

needs of the town and the Diocese. A good and well established English Medium School

had been a long felt need in this area. But it was not easy to get the Fathers to start

another Institution as the demands on them were many all over the country and their

personnel few. But with his inimitable patience and perseverance, constant pleading

and continuous pursuance, he succeeded in getting the approval of Rev. Fr. Janssens

Jean Baptist, XXVII, General of the Society of Jesus in Rome to start a School, and he

entrusted the Project to the Fathers of Madurai Jesuit Province to which belong the

colleges in the South like Loyola College in Madras, St. Joseph’s College in Trichy and

St. Xavier’s in Palayamkottai, Tirunalveli and Andhra Loyola College in Vijayawada.

His leadership at once busied himself in 1962 with looking for a site and

after examining several and with the help of his secretary Rev. Fr. Arulaiah and

Rev. Fr. T. Balaiah SJ of Andhra Loyola College, finally decided upon the present one.

Only God knows what difficulties His Lordship and the two Fathers underwent in getting

the first 60 acres of the land which belonged to 25 different people. Experience showed

that after a few years, a Cinema theatre might could have crop up in them or hotels set

Work as a team, and always learn to share the fruits of success.

Page 18: CO-EDUCATION HAND - BOOK 2016 - 2017loyolapublicschool.org › pdfs › Loyola-Hand-Book-2016-17.pdf · HAND - BOOK 2016 - 2017 SEVENTH ... Home Assignments 56 Non-Attendance & Leave

18

up and houses built. They earnestly requested the owners to part with the land for such

an important and worthy public cause for a fair and reasonable price. Their names are

well remembered even today by the Institution as an example of generous sacrifice for

a good cause.

The Blue-prints and the plans for the school building, hostels and other structures

were prepared by our well-known architect of Andhra and Tirupathi Universities, Rev.

Brother Giandavide, A.R.A (Milan) P.I.M.E (Rome) Italy. The site plan before you, the

entrance facade and the artist’s view in the printed folder are impressive, as you can see

for yourselves. The buildings are oriented East-West to avoid the summer sun. The future

expansion and development have been taken into consideration and all the facilities

fore-seen so that we have only to execute the plan by stages as and when funds are

available. The total cost of the whole scheme was estimated at 45 to 50 lakhs of rupees.

The immediate objective was to put up the first Entrance Block for which the Foundation

laid with the ground and the first floor comprising six rooms, which would serve as

temporary hostel and class rooms so that the School might function with a few standards

from July, 1964.

The Public in Guntur showed great enthusiasm for the new school. As this was a

big scheme involving large sums of money, Fr. Y.Papaiah sent out a printed appeal for

funds and few of their names are marked in the history of LPS for their generous

contribution. The Indian Leaf Tobacco Development, Co. Ltd., gave Rs. 10,000/-. The

Guntur District Co-operative Marketing Society gave another Rs. 10,000/-, Mr. A.

Sarvarayudu Chowdary of Navabharat Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. Donated Rs. 10,000/- and

the Guntur District Land Mortgage bank offered Rs.750/-. Mr. Madan Mohan Rao of

Hyderabad gave Rs.1,000/-. Fr. Papaiah acknowledged with gratitude theses donations

thanking the Managers and their Staff, “MAY GOD BLESS THEM”. Many have promised

to donate but they had taken their own time to fulfill their promises- perhaps due to

circumstances.

Rev.Fr. Papaiah met the then Chief Minister, the Finance and Education Ministers

in Hyderabad. They showed great interest in our scheme and appreciated the Jesuit’s

efforts with the promise of full co-operation and help as far as Government was

concerned. Fr. Papaiah presented his application through the Special Secretary for

Education, who infused fresh hope of carrying out the scheme. The then Collector of

Guntur Dt – Mr. V. Srinivasachary, and other officials had been very helpful indeed when

he had to deal with them regarding the school. Fr. Papaiah found the officials in Delhi

too very appreciative of our endeavor in establishing a school of this type. There were

already pressing requests for application forms and admissions not only from the town

and nearby places but from distant South, from Bombay, Delhi, Patna, Jemshedpur and

Calcutta. If by God’s help and grace, we finished a block by June and started classes, the

admission was going to be a veritable problem, indeed, judging from the pressing requests

people were making to admit their children. Jesuits needed help from the public, from

philanthropists and our Government to put up the necessary buildings both for the

students and the staff as the campus is far away from the town and as we lack the

necessary things like electricity, water and transport. We hope to get help from the

Government and all of you and this hope was not confounded.

Kindness gives birth to kindness – Sophocles.

19

The task ahead of you is never greater than the power behind you.

Rev.Fr. Papaiah met the Education Minister earlier at Andhra Loyola College,

Vijayawada and he was much impressed with the religious and philosophic out-look on

life. “Go-ahead Father, we shall do all we can”. In return Fr.Papaiah complemented that

“we are fortunate in having you as Minister for Education, who understands the

importance of a public school for future generation”. Fr. Papaiah acknowledged the

keen interest of Mr. Brahmananda Reddy, Minister for Finance who showed great

interest in the establishment of Loyola Public School in Guntur Dt.

The foundation stone of the Hostel was laid by Dr.V.L.Dutt on 15th April 1967.

To raise fund Fr.Papaiah invited Smt. M.S.Subbulakshmi to give a musical concert in

Sept’ 1968 and she generously donated the money to complete the construction. Hostel

was ready by next year and then solemnly inaugurated by Sri.K.Brahmananda Reddy,

the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The boys were residing in the school building

and were transferred to New Hostel Building. To add to the attraction of the school, a

swimming pool was constructed. Adding a feather to our Cap, LPS initiated the students

to participate in sports and games. A triangular sports meet was conducted with

St.Patricks, Sec’bad and St.John’s, Gannavaram. LPS could also boast of Army, Navy and

Air-Force wings. A shooting range wall also was built.

The need to reach out to the poor children of our workers found concrete

expression in starting a Telugu Medium school for them. It was called Vijay Mary Centre

at first and. Bro. Soosai Arul was in charge. It went through various phases and

transformations and became Loyola Telugu school and now it is Loyola High School.

A Short Profile of the Golden Jubilee Building

Rev.Fr. T. Inniah, the former Superior & Correspondent called for the staff meeting

on 15th Sept. 2009 in which we discussed various needs of the school, particularly a

decent, elegant building to boost and excel in ICSE curriculum. The same proposal was

very much accepted by the Jesuit community to go for new structure with good facilities

for our students. It was taken to Fr. Provincial and his team for wider consultation and

approval. They too felt the need of a New Structure with good facilities for the ICSE

syllabus. The Project was assigned to Rev. Fr. Uvari Antony, the present Principal and

Treasurer who approached Mr. GVSR. Krishnareddy(ALPS) to assist him in the Project.

The foundation stone was laid on March 1st, 2010 by Smt. M.Sucharitha MLA and

blessed by Rev.Fr. Pothireddy Anthony, the Provincial of Andhra Province. The project

took nearly two and half years to be completed. The credit goes to Fr. Uvari Antony and

Mr. Krishnareddy who left no stone unturned and made the dream come true. Their

efforts deserve a thunderous applause and their commitment is highly praiseworthy. It

was solemnly blessed and inaugurated on 8th September, 2012 in the presence of

Rev.Fr.Pothireddy Anthony, Mr. Maheshreddy(Alumnus),AMR Constructions Ltd.,

Sri. Dokka Monikya Vara Prasada Rao, the Minister for Rural Development of A.P,

several Jesuits, Alumni and well wishers who graced the occasion, expressed the visionary,

innovative and creative efforts.

Mr. David Nath, our Architect and his son Mr. Gnandeep who are famous for their

creative and esthetic contribution to various religious buildings in and around Guntur

came forward to design our Golden Jubilee building. Fr. Principal sat with both of them

Page 20: CO-EDUCATION HAND - BOOK 2016 - 2017loyolapublicschool.org › pdfs › Loyola-Hand-Book-2016-17.pdf · HAND - BOOK 2016 - 2017 SEVENTH ... Home Assignments 56 Non-Attendance & Leave

20

and finalized the building plan with creative architectural elevation. There were several

odds and misunderstanding to be faced by Fr. Principal but he overcame with God’s

abundant graces and blessings. The teaching staff and non teaching staff rendered their

supports and practical suggestions in completion of the Golden Jubilee Block.

Alumni of Loyola Public School (ALPS) was refocused and rectified the mistakes of

the management and brought them very close to the management and the staff. LPS

family is ever grateful to ALPS for the generous contribution of 35 lakhs from various

individuals and classmates. To raise fund Fr.Principal conducted ALPS meet in both

Hyderbad and Guntur. Many of them supported with their finance and personal. The

management gratefully acknowledges the contribution of ALPS(Alumni of Loyola Public

School) for their accompaniment with both personal and finance to complete the New

Building. Thanks a million to everyone! Once the building is completed the entire building

looks very elegant, spacious, artistic and innovative.

Fr. Papaiah, the founder of the school wanted this School one of the top best

schools in India. His dreams have been fulfilled with lots of achievements with the

visionary and missionary spirit of the present Principal and the committed teaching and

non-teaching staff. The school vision statement was refocused and geared to Golden

purity and piety; the open book with the school motto inscribed on it is a constant

reminder of the ideal which the school strives to inculcate in the young students.

The motto of the School is “Natus Ad Majora” which means “BORN FOR GREATER

THINGS”. The school, the students and the faculty constantly aim at achieving greater

things for God, country and humankind by aiming at excellence in everything.

THE SOCIETY OF JESUS

ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA

St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, was born in 1491, as

the last child of a large Basque family of Spain. The name Loyola came from the ancestral

castle that was the family heritage of St.Ignatius. According to the traditions of his

family, Ignatius was trained to arms and to the etiquette of court life. He enlisted himself

in the border wars with France and was badly wounded in the battle. As he lay

convalescing at Loyola, he read the Gospel narratives and the lives of saints and was

inspired to follow Christ by giving up all worldly ambitions and trappings of power and

embracing a life of poverty, sacrifice and service after the example of his saintly mentors.

He began this new life at the age of 31. He spent a year of severe penance and

intense prayer in a solitary cave on the banks of the river Cardoner near the town

Manresa.

He recorded his experiences in a book called “The Spiritual Exercises”, which

became the soul and centre, the rule and character of every Jesuit who came after.

Reflecting on the crisis in the Church of his time, he felt that the need of the hour was

for learned and holy priests, free of greed and ambition and ready to serve the poor

and to give a witness to the love of Christ for men. To achieve this objective, he set

himself in right earnest to study from grammar school to college and university in the

various Spanish centres of learning and finally took his Master’s Degree from the

Sorbonne University, Paris. At the same time, he won over a group of brilliant and like-

minded university men (one of whom was St.Francis Xavier), moulded them by the

Spiritual Exercises and welded them into a religious fraternity which became the Society

of Jesus, or Jesuits, as they popularly came to be known in the course of time.

JESUITS

The Society of Jesus is a world wide organization of religious men, numbering

about 24000 spread all over the world, of whom over 3000 are working in the 14

provinces of India. In Andhra Pradesh alone there are about 160 Jesuits working in

Schools and Colleges, youth services, social work centres, in parishes, in mission out-

reach programmes and in any and every form of ministry of the Church.

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF JESUIT EDUCATION

Is world-affirming. It assists in the total formation of each individual within the

human community. It includes a religious dimension that permeates the entire

education; it is an apostolic instrument that promotes dialogue between faith

and culture.

If you are interested in something, you can do miracles.

Page 23: CO-EDUCATION HAND - BOOK 2016 - 2017loyolapublicschool.org › pdfs › Loyola-Hand-Book-2016-17.pdf · HAND - BOOK 2016 - 2017 SEVENTH ... Home Assignments 56 Non-Attendance & Leave

23

Insists on individual care and concern for each person. It emphasizes activity on

the part of the student and encourages life long openness to growth.

Is value-oriented. It encourages a realistic knowledge, love and acceptance of the

self.

Proposes Christ as the model of human life. It provides adequate personal care

and concern for others. It celebrates faith in personal and community prayer,

worship and service.

Is a preparation for active life-commitment. It serves the faith that does justice,

seeks to form “men and women for others” and manifests a particular concern

for the poor.

Is an apostolic instrument in the Church as it serves human society. It prepares

students for active participation in the church and for the service of others.

Pursues excellence in its work of formation and witnesses to that excellence.

Stresses Lay Jesuit collaboration and relies on a spirit of community among

administrators, teachers, parents, alumni and benefactors in an atmosphere that

promotes community.

Adopts means and methods in order to achieve its purposes most effectively with

a common vision and common goals. It assists in providing the professional training

and on-going formation that is needed especially for administrators and teachers.

Education remains a preferential work of the Society of Jesus. As in the past-ever

since the 16th century – Jesuit schools can be very effective in educating men and women

for a just and human world “If they will be true to their particular Jesuit heritage” (2).

This document “can be a standard against which we measure ourselves”. (Fr.Kolvenbach).

IGNATIAN VISION AND JESUIT EDUCATION

The spiritual vision of Ignatius evolved from this reflection on his own life

experiences (170, 173, 174, 178, 181, 182), and is variously recorded in his innumerable

writings, especially the “Spiritual Exercises”. (175-176) The following nine statements

attempt to summarize the main elements of that vision. Each is followed by certain

characteristics which even now determine Jesuit education.

I. God and Creation

For Ignatius, and for Jesuits who have Him as their spiritual guide, God is the

origin and the goal of all creation. In fact, through faith, He can be discovered in all

natural and human events, and especially in the lived experience of each individual

person. 921)

Hence, JESUIT EDUCATION aims at Integral Development of both individual

students and of the world at large:-

1. It understands creation as God’s work, a help to lead man to that ultimate reality,

hence worthy of study and contemplation and endless exploration. (23-24)

2. It promotes the all-round development of the student so that he becomes a mature

and balanced person and an active member of the human community. (25-33)

Always set your goal further than what you think you are capable of.

Page 24: CO-EDUCATION HAND - BOOK 2016 - 2017loyolapublicschool.org › pdfs › Loyola-Hand-Book-2016-17.pdf · HAND - BOOK 2016 - 2017 SEVENTH ... Home Assignments 56 Non-Attendance & Leave

24

3. The student is particularly helped to establish a personal relationship with God

and to develop values able to resist Godlessness and debasing materialism.(34-

36) Thus he is prepared for life – not just for exams – both here and hereafter.(37)

4. Given the close relationship between God and His Creation, Jesuit Education seeks

to bring a dialogue and synthesis between religious Faith and Culture, between

Faith and Science, each clarifying and perfecting the other. (38-39)

II. God and Man

Each man and woman is loved by God and is called to actualize him/herself fully

in his/her uniqueness in full freedom. (40)

Hence JESUIT EDUCATION aims at Growth in Uniqueness of every person by

insisting on:-

1. Individual attention being paid to every student, (42-44)

2. His active participation in the process of learning, (45)

3. And keen desire to go on learning (and growing) all through life.(46-48)

III. Struggle Against Evil

Self-realization is made impossible by one’s evil desires and the evil in the world.

Aided and strengthened by God’s love, one has to acquire self-knowledge and knowledge

of the obstructing forces in the world and struggle against those obstacles to freedom,

while developing capacities necessary for its exercise.(49)

Hence JESUIT EDUCATION, in order to foster Growth in Goodness lays stress on:-

1. Character formation, that is, on acquiring for oneself a proper value system, with

the ability to make sound moral judgements. (51-53)

2. A realistic knowledge, acceptance and love of self. (54-56)

3. And an equally realistic knowledge of the world with its goddness as well as

obstacles to growth in integrity and a commitment to bring about a needed change

in it. (57-58)

IV. Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ holds central place in the lives of Jesuits, as it did in that of Ignatius. In

their vision, Jesus is the perfect model for human life because of his total surrender to

God’s love in the service of others. He is alive in our midst as some one to be known,

loved and followed. (59)

Hence JESUIT EDUCATION while promoting Growth in Spiritual Life:-

1. Offers to one and all the example of Jesus Christ, as model of human life; and to

Christians in particular as a personal friend who gained forgiveness and true

freedom for us through his death and resurrection, (True “Christian” is one who

imitates Christ in his goodness and service). (61-62)

2. Animates through individual guidance ( Cura personalis”) the spiritual growth of

every one with means that are proper to his respective creed and culture (63-66)

and especially—

Success will not lower its standard to us. We must raise our standard to success.

Page 25: CO-EDUCATION HAND - BOOK 2016 - 2017loyolapublicschool.org › pdfs › Loyola-Hand-Book-2016-17.pdf · HAND - BOOK 2016 - 2017 SEVENTH ... Home Assignments 56 Non-Attendance & Leave

25

3. Offers a progressive initiation to prayer and worship , both individual and in

common. (67-70)

V. Love and Service

Service of others is the only genuine expression of the love and service of God to

which every one is invited. Ignatius who said :love is shown in deeds”, wants that

principles learnt and knowledge acquired be put into practice in real life situation.(71)

Hence JESUIT EDUCATION aims at Commitment to Life of Serive.

1. It assists in the training of men and women who will put their beliefs and attitudes

into practice throughout their lives;(73)

2. It encourages Faith that expresses itself in works of justice and peace in building a

more human world and a community of love; (74-76)

3. It helps students to realize that their God given talents are also for the benefit of

the larger human society;(82-83) and

4. It shows a particular concern for the poor and the marginalized, who are generally

oppressed and exploited in today’s world.(85) The poor from the context of Jesuit

education.(88)

VI. The Church

Service in and through the community of Believers in Christ (i.e. the “Church”

under the leadership of Holy Father the Pope) was for Ignatius the foundation of his

Society. He was convinced that one needs to have the support of and loyality to one’s

faith community in one’s service to the world at large.(91)

Hence JESUIT EDUCATION while helping to establish a human family united in

Faith and Love

1. Collaborates with the Catholic Community and its leaders in building a new and

just society

2. Trains Catholic students to be active members of their Community (101 -103)

while encouraging all to be active as members of the local community and of

their respective religion.(99)

VII. Excellence

“Magis” (the more!) was a favourite Ignation motto. His constant concern was

“for the greater service of God” (A.M.D.G) That concern he instilled into his first

companions who went through all sorts hardships as they served God and their

neighbour.(105)

Hence JESUIT EDUCATION insists on the Pursuit of Excellence.

1. It insists first of all, on human excellence, and within that context on excellence in

all areas of school life so that the fullest possible development of every dimension

of the person is realized (107) and men and women are trained to be leaders in

VIII. “Friends in the Lord”

Ignatius soon realized the importance of working in partnership with like minded

people in the service of God. He called his early companions “friends in the Lord”, (178)

and later established Jesuit Communities.(116)

Hence JESUIT EDUCATION is carried out In Partnership with every sector of the

educational community, It strives for—

1. An intelligent Jesuit-lay collaboration, both assuming appropriate

responsibilities(118-119)

2. A community spirit among the various constituents, (eg. Management and staff,

the Jesuit community, students and parents, former students and benefactors)

based on shared vision, goals and efforts. Each of these sectors has a specific

contribution to make to the entire educational process.(122-136)

3. A structure in which there is sharing of information, advice and decision-making

responsibility.(137-142)

IX. Discernment

Ignatius and his companions made decision on the basis of an ongoing process of

individual and common “discernment” which he has described in various places. Past

decisions were evaluated in the context of prayerful reflection on their results and

adaptations made in a constant search for excellence.(143)

Hence JESUIT EDUCATION in response to the ever changing needs of times, places

and peoples insists on Ongoing Evaluation and Adaptation.

1. School policies, structures, methods and all other elements of its environment

are subjected to regular evaluation and necessary adaptation.(145-147)

2. Sharing of ideas, experiences and even personnel among Jesuit schools form them

into a network, a Jesuit “system” of schools. (148-151)

3. Continuing education and personal, professional and spiritual development of

teachers and administrators enable them to evaluate and to adopt educational

processes whenever necessary. (152-153)

SOME PEDAGOGICAL PRINCIPLES

1. The teacher assists in the growth process. He does not manipulate it. (155)

2. The student plays an active role in his education. (156)

3. Everything in the school is conductive to the type of education we intend to give.

(157)

4. Educational process is dependent on personal relations and good rapport among

the various sectors of school communities. (158)

5. Prior reading of the course material to be covered and its frequent and careful

repetition facilitate learning. (160)

6. Jesuit education insists on inter-disciplinary approach. (161)

7. Habits of reflection on life’s experiences are characteristic of Jesuit pedagogy.

(162)

Wake up everyday with a dream to make your dreams come true.

Page 27: CO-EDUCATION HAND - BOOK 2016 - 2017loyolapublicschool.org › pdfs › Loyola-Hand-Book-2016-17.pdf · HAND - BOOK 2016 - 2017 SEVENTH ... Home Assignments 56 Non-Attendance & Leave

27

8. Depth in learning, rather than quantity of course material. “Non multa, sed

multum!” (163)

A description of the characteristic of Jesuit education can never be perfect and

can never be final. But a growing understanding of the heritage of our schools, the

Ignatian vision applied to education, can be the impetus to renewed dedication to this

work, and renewed willingness to undertake those tasks which will make ti ever more

effective. (168)

Focus on your potential instead of your limitations.

UNIVERSAL PRAYERS

1. Our Father in heaven, Holy be Your name,

Your kingdom come.

Your will be done on earth, as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.

Do not bring us to the test, but deliver us from evil, Amen

2. Almighty God, direct and prosper all that is done in this school

Bless our founders and benefactors, our teachers and friends.

Grant that all who are in this School may work together for the good of each.

In our work give us the spirit of understanding and perseverance; in our prayers

the power to draw near to You and in our games true sportsmanship.

Perfect the good work which You have begun in us that with all our powers we

may strive for the setting of Your kingdom in this world to Your honour and glory.

3. O God, You are the truth and origin of all knowledge, help me to concentrate on

my studies and not let my mind wander.

Help me in my leisure time to enjoy myself so that I do good to myself and to

others. At games, play hard but fair in all my endeavours.

To direct my will towards what is right and that to make this day and all the days

of my life happy for myself and for all whom I encounter.

4. Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi.

Lord make me an instrument of Your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me love.

Where there is injury, pardon.

Where there is doubt, faith.

Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so

much seek to be consoled as to console;

to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love, for it is in giving that we receive;

it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

5. Prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola

Teach us, good Lord,

To serve Thee as Thou deservest,

To give and not to count the cost,

To fight and not to heed the wounds,

To toil and not to look for rest,

Page 39: CO-EDUCATION HAND - BOOK 2016 - 2017loyolapublicschool.org › pdfs › Loyola-Hand-Book-2016-17.pdf · HAND - BOOK 2016 - 2017 SEVENTH ... Home Assignments 56 Non-Attendance & Leave

39There is no knowledge that is not power – Ralph Waldo Emerson

To labour and not to ask for any reward,

Save that of knowing that we do thy will.

6. Self Offering

Take, O Lord, as Your right,

Receive as my gift; all my liberty,

My memory, my understanding, my will

All that I have,

All that I am.

All that I can be

You have given it all to me.

To You, O Lord, I restore it,

All is Yours,

dispose of it according to Your will;

Give me Your love

Give me Your grace

It is enough for me.

7. For Strength

This is my prayer to You, my Lord !

Strike, strike at the root of penury in my heart.

Give me the strength, lightly to bear my joys and sorrows.

Give me the strength to make my love fruitful in service.

Give me the strength, never to disown the poor or bend my knee before

insolent might,

Give me the strength to raise my mind high above daily trifles.

And give me the strength to surrender my life to Your will with love.

8. Just for Today

Lord for tomorrow and its needs

I do not pray;

Keep me my God, from stain of sin,

Just for today

Let me both diligently work, and duly pray;

Let me be kind in word and deed.

Just for today.

Let me do no wrong or idle work

Unthinking say;

Set Thou a seal upon my lips,

Just for today

Without discipline, there’s no life at all. - Katharine Hepburn

Let me in season, Lord, be grave, in season gay;

Let me be faithful to Thy grace.

Just for today

So for tomorrow and its needs.

I don’t pray;

But keep me, guide me and love me.

Lord just for today.

9. A UNIVERSAL PRAYER

O Lord, I pray to You for all men, my brothers

Bless my parents and my family,

My friends and my enemies.

Fill the leaders of nations with wisdom and

courage religious men and women

With devotion, mothers, with unstinted

love. Take special care of children and students,

That they may grow in strength, wisdom and grace.

Give us understanding, sympathy and charity.

For one another, since we are all brothers,

The children of our Father in Heaven.

10. Our Discipline Code

It is well to think well. It is Divine to act well.

1. God : Author of the Universe who inspires everyone, He is the

light.

2. Silence : It is only in the depth of silence, the voice of God is heard

3. Obedience : Obedience alone gives the right to command

4. Selflessness : The secret of true joy lies in self- sacrifice and not in self-

seeking.

5. Truthfulness : Truth is above everything; But living of truth is highest.

6. Sharing : In this world it is not what we take but what we give, that

makes us rich.

7 Punctuality : Time Waste is Life Waste.

8. Cleanliness : Cleanliness is next to Godliness

9. Helpfulness : Life is sweet when it is spent in the Service of others. Help

ever, Hurt never.

10. Sincerity : An ounce of sincerity is better than tons of knowledge.
