Sesungguhnya, sebuah organisasi seperti BERNA~ yang kian tahun kian memki5esar dan yangkakitangan-kakitangannya pula bertempat bukan sahaia di ibu pejabat di ,Kuala Lumpur bahkan di luar 1bu koto. - dari Sabah hingga ke Perlis - perlu, soya rasa, menerbitkan berito keluarganya, setidak-ijdaknya sebulan sekali. Demi sesungguhnyo, inilah tujuan utoma BB ini - mewar kan segalo-segala perkara, peristiwa dan kegiatan yang kakitangan-kakitangan BERNAMA dan keluargo-keluarga mereka ada terlibat. Tujuan kedua ialah untuk memperkenalkan mereka yang belum kenai aritaro satu soma lain, dan meneguhkan lagi ikatan salatulrahim, muhibbah dan persahabatan antara mereka yang sudahpun berkena I-kenalan. Tujuan ketiga ialah untlo!< memberi peluang kepada kakitangan-kakitongan BERNA~, tidak kira yang berkhiclmot di dalam Jabatan Pengarang ataupun diluarnya, menulis mengenai perkara-perkara yang o poda lazimnya tidak disiarkan oleh BERNA~ untuk pelanggan-pelan~Jannya.

Perkara-perkara yang dimaksudkan itu ialah seperti sajak, pantun, jerlaka, teka-teki, teka silang kata, kata-kata hikmat dan peribahasa, cerpen, IITokoh Bulan Ini \I dan luin lain lagi seumpomanya yang boleh menghilangkan, sekurang­sekurangnya selama beberapa detik, kekusutan fikiran dan ~eperiatan jiwa.

Up in the spacious Bernama office, on all three floors, seven kettles are singing away merrily amidst the clatter of typewriters and TP machines.

The earliest kettle was managed by Puan Ghee, former secretary of the former ,- KP.

Another long singing, or more correctl.ystanding, kettle is the one in the TP r09m wh i Ie thd subs were next to have got theirs.

This was quickly followed by BES, G NS, BPS, and the Library will get one soon.

Antaranya ialah tip-off dari 'Atan' telah menghasilkan berita perlanggaran bas ekspres di lebuhraya Kl/Seremban dan 'tip off! dari Nusi menghasilkan cerita kematian pesakit jantung berlubang Jamaluddin Abdul Halim.

The Dag Hammarskjold Memorial Fellowship programme, now in its 17th year, r

is an effort to Improve journalism in developing nations. It is financed y the Dag Hammarskjold Memorial Fund which is administered by the United N tions Correspondents Association (UNCA). Each year, four youngjourl1alists are brought to New York shortly before the opening of the United Nations General Assembly In mid-September to 'cover the three-month session.

The Dag Hammarskjold Fellows selected to observe and report on the 34th sessioh of the United Nations GenerarAssembly ~r919) were Carmen Reyes (Chile), Francisco Uludong (Saipan), Mohamed Sejir~Jlassi (Tunisia) and Yap jin Neo t (Malaysia) .

Fellows are selected from working journalists both in the prl_nt and electronic bl(l)l1

media. They are gene~all y journalis.ts with some years of experience in their res~ctive professions. The Fellowship programme is not a training course and the Fellows are expected to work Independently. They ore first given a familiarisation tour of the U. N. ~n'd press facilities. The Fellows are also introduced to the members of UNCA wl10 are all accredited correspondents of-the U. N. and wh:>m the Fellows may freely consult for guidance or advice.

With regards the coverage of the General Assembly and the transmission of news stories, however, each Fellow is respensible for his/her own arrangements with his/her employer. In the case of stories for BERNAMA, arrangements were made

with the Reuters office in New York for the stories to be filed from the Reuters U. N. Bureau offiie .

The press area in the United Nations Secretariat bui Iding Is occupied by the United Nations Departm~nt of Public Information and offices of accredited U.N. journal,isJ'S' representing' ~he world's large newspapers, broadcast dnd wire services. Telex offic~s 'of ITT,' RCA and WUI are also located in the press area. During the period of their Fellowshill, the Fellows iTlay avail themselves of the facilities such as typewriters, releases, background literature, etc. which are available in the press area.

As has been the case for many years, the D.agrHammarski?ld Fell?wship pcogrammtr is usually extended by visits to other countries which may wish to invite the Fellows. Last year, invitations were extended by the Canadia:'), American and jc Xlnese Governments.

The Canadian Government invited the Fellows for a week's visit from Dec .2 to 9. The progror . E: wbs designed to provid~ aD insig,ht into <:;anada's sy-stem of government, its economy, peoples, cultures and ways of life. The visit was confined to three cities in eastern Canada - Ottawa, Montreal an<.' Halifax ­because of the limited timeovaHab~e. ):j of I -3 t

Towards the close of the General Assembly, the U.S. Government (as it has done for the past 12 years) provided a 30-day travel grant to the Dag Hammarskjold­Fellows to see and learn more of the United States.outside New York. The package programme was designed t~ accommodate the professional inte'rests of the Fellows who were travell ing as a g;oup. The programme took the Feilows

• t • ito media organisations, research institutions (both private and governmenTal), places of historic, physical and cultural interest, etc. in 10 cities in eight different sta tes .

After the U.S. programme, an invitation was extended to the Fellows by the Japanese Government. The seven-day Japanese programme included visits to the Diet, broadcasting and press organisations, industry and places of cultural interest.

f Kalau "Kaki Pancing II Salurkan Hobby

Kato orang yang sudah IIkaratan ll daldrn hal pancing-memoncing, kalau sudah jadi "kaki pancing" segalanya bisa dilupakan, termosuk anak-isteri.

Walaupun isterinya sudah ham; I tua, dia tidak perduli. Kaki dan tongannya terus-menerus gatal dikelitik nafsunya untuk pergi memancing" Padar..:t1, menurut kepercayaan datuk-nenek, kalau isteri sedang hamil, sang-suam" PCIntong memancing, berburu ataupun melakukan hal-hal yang menggangg~' kehidupan atau menyakiti setiap mokhluk tuhan.

Jika ponta gon itu dilanggar, katanya, bisa membawa akibat pada fisik cnak yang akan dilahirkan. Mungkin di sekitar mulutnya akan terdapat tanda cacat seperti mulut ikan yang sobek kerana mota-kail. Ml .1gkin pula ketika ba . lahir, wajah atou salah satu bagian tubuh si-bayi akan menyerupai binatang yang ditangkap atau dibunuh ayahnya .

Isteri saya, yang kini sedang hamil tua, juga sependapat dengan soya. Dia, bahkan, nemberikan kerjasama yang baik setiap kali saya akan pergi menyalurkan keg ,·-an (hobby) memancing. Dia tak pernah lupa menyediakan mokanan da. dlinuman jika saya akan menghabiskan sehari penuh di tepi lombong. Dia benar-benar seorang isteri yang mengerti akan kegemaran suaminya .

Kebetulan bung Kuah, salah seorang pemberita gugus depan Bernama, juga se-hobby dengan saya. Seperti halnya isteri saya, isteri bung Kuah juga sedang hamil tua. Kami sependapat dalam menilai kepercayaan datuk-nenek tentang pantang-Iarang itu.

Kalau "kaki pancing II bertemu di waktu senggang tentu tak ada lain lagi yang dibincangkan kecuali ikan dan lombong. Lantos, kolau mereka sudah duduk di tepi lombong ddngan alat pancing-nya, perhatian dan pikirannya hanya tertuju poda gerak tali pancing yang menjulur ke dalam air.

Sampai-sampai jan;; kepada isteri untuk pulang tidak melebihi pukul 5 petang dilupakan. Paling cepot pukul 7 petang baru tiba di rumah. Berbogai alasan sudah dipersiapkan kalou nantinyo ditanyakan isteri tentang kelambotan kami sampai di rumah. Tapi, sang-isteri ternyata selalu menyambut suaminya dengan senyum tersungging di bibir. Kalaupunada pertanyaan, selalu yang rutin: "Dapot ikan ? II
