Co-op Newsletter

May 2018 The big event in May as usual is our Annual Open Day. It

is we believe from supplier feedback the best in Store Day on offer to farmers nationally. As such we have a many CEO’s and National Sales Managers attending on the Day.

This year marks the 5th anniversary of our move to Wynyard. It seems hard to believe now that less than 5 years ago we were only open to members 3 ½ days a week. It was a huge decision at the time for our Co-op but five consecutive years of growth of our business has well and truly justified the move.

Once again, we have over 50 national and local suppliers attending which will guarantee we have something interesting for every member on the day. It’s a rare opportunity to talk first hand with some of the leading Australian technical experts in their fields in rural retailing whether that relates to animal health, electric fencing, dairy supplies, pastures and forage etc. A full list of attendees is provided later in this newsletter.

One of our focus’s this year is holding a series of short

information sessions during the day on relevant topics.

Members can choose which session they choose to attend.

10.30 -11am Dr Lisa Walters Boehringer Ingelheim (Merial) speaking on liver fluke. Traditionally we’ve thought that the north west coast doesn’t have an issue with liver fluke. A series of tests along the Coast disagrees. It’s present here and potentially if not controlled can cause significant health issues.

Lisa is ideally placed to talk on the topic being a qualified vet; having worked in Tasmania and currently employed by one of the major international animal health suppliers.

In addition to member deals we will have over $10,000 worth of prizes to give away/win for members on the day.

Most of all it’s a great day out particularly if you’re new to the Co-op, so come along and join us on the day, meet with other members and enjoy a free feed.

As always, we supply members a free lunch on the day.

We’re delighted that Rivalea Australia’s largest pork producer have offered to supply members with pork for our BBQ. If you were lucky enough to attend our Xmas BBQ last year, you’ll know its worth travelling a long distance for some mouth-watering Rivalea pork.

News from the Board We strongly encourage all members to join us on the 23rd of May for our Annual Open

Day. It’s our major store event of the year but equally importantly it’s a great opportunity for members to meet and socialise. We particularly encourage new members and members we don’t get the chance to catch up with regularly to attend. We are closing the Smithton store for the day so that Smithton staff and members can join us on this important day.

Attending the Open Day will be many of the leaders of some of Australia best known agricultural brands and we’re delighted that once again Peter Law founder of the AIRR buying group will be attending with key AIRR staff.

This year’s Open Day marks the 5th Anniversary of the the Wynyard Store. The move to Wynyard has transformed our Co-op and been a critical factor in 5 years of continued record growth. 2017/18 has certainly been another year of

considerable growth and consolidation for the Co-op.

Directors will take the opportunity to udpate members on some exciting developments we are undetraking for the Co-op going forward.

As we will outline on the day; our growth and success as a business in recent years has left us well placed to do this.

Rod Rylah AIRR founder and CEO Peter Law will be once again joining us for our Open Day.

Stockfeed Prices Tightening - they’re almost like death and taxes unfortunately - prices are moving

upwards across virtually all stockfeed categories.

The continuing lack of rainfall in mainland States and the resultant need to grain feed stock is causing upward price pressure on grain. Forecast Barley stocks at year end look likely to be at historical lows due to demand both domestically and export demand to China. Wheat stocks at this stage look ok however if we continue to see dry condition and no break in the weather this will see a tightening of these wheat stocks and production forecasts as dry conditions delay new season sowing. Feed demand is also increased as most areas haven’t had the rain fall to induce feed cover in paddocks. Any hay that was not moving 3-4 months ago is now on the move and at almost double the price in mainland States. Widespread rain is certainly needed to soften grain markets. Protein meals are also on the rise due to uncertainty of production offshore and the possibility that Canola plantings will be reduced domestically due to the lack of rain. Fortunately for most of our members we’ve had decent recent rain and reasonable pasture growth. We recommend all our members who use significant quantities of stockfeed to talk regularly with their supplier to look at ways of utilising their feed options as effectively as possible.

Fuel Prices Fuel pricing is rising due to crude oil increases lately. Members should be aware that rising energy

prices eventually indirectly transmit to products like polypipe and urea because of energy consumption during manufacture. The Co-op collectively negotiates on members behalf for bulk fuel purchasing. A detailed analysis of over 2,500 United fuel transactions in March showed that members saved nearly $9,000 off fuel pump prices in March alone. That equates to an annual saving over $100,000. We’re confident members using our Tas Petroleum on farm delivery scheme are also saving similr significant savings due to the bulk purchasing deal in place,.
