PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

At Pomona Catholic, we are constantly made aware of the many blessings our Lord sends our way. One very poignant and incredible blessing came to us through the beautiful innocence of a nine year old child named Victoria whose brother attends our middle school and whose mother serves as our cafeteria chef. Victoria came running up to me early on the morning of December 8th. She was very excited and shouted, “Mr. Torres, I have something for you!” With this, she handed me a small zip-lock baggie containing loose change. She said that this was for PC. I asked her what she would like for me to get and she replied, “Whatever the school needs!” I share this moving story because it reminded me of the words of our Lord, “Have you not heard…out of the mouths of babes, you have brought forth praise?” … This beautiful child reminds us that no matter the size of our gift, if we give it with love, it becomes an act of love and praise to our God. This brings me back to the abundant gift from the Shea Foundation … the installation of central heating and air conditioning of our wonderful school. The Shea family has invested a tremendous amount of money into this project that predominantly benefits our students. The Shea’s challenged Pomona Catholic to raise $160,000.00 to supplement their gift. We have been working diligently in an effort to raise this $160,000.00 and I invite you and encourage you to join us in this endeavor that we know will benefit our students. Victoria’s gift, like the gift of that little boy in the story of the loaves and the fishes, (Mark 8:6-7) reminds us that Jesus can multiply our gift, no matter the size, if we give it with love, Jesus can and will do the rest. Thank you in advance for your kind response to Pomona Catholic’s invitation to help meet the challenge of our goal to raise $160,000.00. May our Lord bless you abundantly and may the blessing of St. Francis of Assisi be with you always:

May the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord show his face to you and have compassion on you!

May he turn his face to you and give you peace! Sincerely yours in Christ,

Samuel Torres, Principal [email protected] 909-623-5297, ext. 11

Advent Reconciliation Service

December 2, 2015 Pomona Catholic has historically joined with the universal Church in the preparation for the birth of Our Lord. From the 1950’s up until the early 1980’s, the students and faculty would walk to St. Joseph Church to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In the years since, the students walk down to the school auditorium to prepare for this same sacrament that our Church invites us to receive. Our Campus Minister always prepares meaningful services and schedules several priests from the surrounding parishes, to be present for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Campus Ministry team presents carefully prepared reflections to the school community to help them approach the priest administering the sacrament. It is gratifying to observe the students approach the sacrament and then return to their places in the reverent manner expected of someone who has just approached the representative of our Lord.

Big sister - little sister

luncheon

September 11, 2015 As always, the Big Sister-Little Sister luncheon is a beautiful heartwarming event that continues to create a bond between our seniors and their freshman little sisters. While they had already spent the first day of school touring the building, fighting with locker combinations, and sharing in the fancy tea party, the luncheon is always a bit more memorable because the freshmen enjoy the special lunch their big sisters have prepared for them. They enjoy the informal picnic style atmosphere out in the rose garden and share stories and antics experienced

during the first weeks of school. The laughter can be heard through the open windows, causing sophomores and juniors to recall their special day back when they were freshmen. Moments like these make the traditions at Pomona Catholic a vital part of what we mean when we say that we strive to provide for the development of the whole person.

San Gabriel Regional Spelling Bee

During the 1980s and up until 1999, Pomona Catholic was the proud sponsor an annual Spelling Bee. The competi-tion brought the feeder schools from as far east as Fontana and as far west as La Puente and El Monte. In the 2012-13 school year Pomona Catholic Middle School sponsored an in-house Spelling Bee, just to introduce the students to open academic competition. In 2013-2014, Pomona Catholic re-instituted the San Gabriel Regional Spelling Bee and on January 29, 2014, to coincide with Catholic Schools Week and to commemorate Pomona Catholic’s 115th anniver-sary of their commitment to Catholic education in this valley, our own middle school students competed against the region’s elementary schools. The success of the return of the competition continues and our own middle school scholars compete against each other to represent their school at the San Gabriel Regional Spelling Bee, proudly sponsored by Pomona Catholic. The Third Annual San Gabriel Regional Spelling Bee, hosted by Pomona Catholic, will be on Wednesday, February 3, 2016. The schools participating in this competition are:

Our Lady of Assumption – Claremont St. Christopher – West Covina St. Dorothy – Glendora St. Joseph – La Puente St. Louise de Marillac – Covina St. Margaret Mary – Chino St. Martha – Valinda Pomona Catholic

Tree Lighting Ceremony

December 10, 2015

Our ASB, always ready for action, introduced a beautiful new tradition to Pomona Catholic. For several days, the ASB officers worked behind the scenes preparing for the special event that would bring local dignitaries, parents, students and many friends, to share in the joy of the evening. Several vendors set up tables selling Christmas items as well as delicious desserts for everyone’s enjoyment. The ASB prepared an opening prayer before the festivities began. The DJ they hired delighted everyone with appropriate music selections and at the appointed time, the ASB President, Selin Lopez, called our Principal, Mr. Samuel Torres, to come forth to hit the switch. In one swoop, the crowd erupted with cheers and applause. Mr. Torres thanked the ASB for their dedication and commitment to Pomona Catholic and also thanked the dignitaries, parents and friends for responding to our students’ invitation to the first annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony.

Haunted House and Trunk or Treat

October 30, 2015

Students marveled at the change in schedule created for them to enjoy the beginning of a new tradition. This year’s Halloween was celebrated like never before. The students arrived for their first period class at 1:00 pm, dressed in their Halloween costumes. They went through their regular class periods, concluding with period 6 at 5:00 p.m. After classes were dismissed, the students went outdoors to enjoy food, music and Trunk or Treat in the parking lot. They took turns entering the ASB Haunted House in the lower level of the school. To add to the festivities, the ASB conducted a costume contest as well as a car decorating contest. The family winning The Best Decorated Car was awarded a decrease of $200.00 off of their commitment to the Walk-a-Thon Fundraiser. Everyone in attendance enjoyed watching an outdoor moving, Hotel Transylvania. The most rewarding treat of the evening was the special time that the PC community shared.

Jubilee Year of Mercy

Pope Francis has instituted a special Jubilee Year of Mercy which will run from December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016. The Holy Father entreats the Lord to make the Jubilee of Mercy a year of grace within the Church, so that the Church, “with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.” Pomona Catholic wishes to be a place where mercy is extended to others, because we ourselves are so in need of God’s mercy. All retreats, religion classes and liturgies will focus on this Year of Mercy. We began our Year of Mercy by having our doors decorated and blessed by Monsignor Loughnane, after the same fashion as the doors were blessed in all pilgrimage churches. Our entire community then processed through the doors, and into the auditorium for the celebration of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. It is the hope of Campus Ministers that all who walk through these doors will be reminded of the importance and significance of this Jubilee Year.

Pomona Catholic’s Rotary Interact

Serving the Community

This year’s club has over 25 members, including an Interact Board which is led by our moderator, Miss Navy Phay, and club President Lesli Bautista. We began the year giving back to the Huntington and Bolsa Chica state beaches by participating in a beach cleanup with a group of 6 girls. Over the span of six months, the Interact Club volunteered with Our Lady of Assumption’s summer camp program, worked with Pomona Rotary at their annual Good for the Sole event, set up the temporary classrooms before construction began on our campus, served dinner at Pomona Catholic’s annual casino night, cooked two meals for the homeless in the Pomona community, manned booths at Pomona Catholic’s first annual Halloween haunt and first annual tree lighting, and brought the Christmas spirit to children at Casa Colina in Pomona. We also attended the Rotary Interact Meeting Symposium with other Interact Clubs in our district. Altogether, our club has completed approximately 100 service hours in the first semester and we will continue to serve our communities while learning more leadership skills.

Adopt a Student

This program is funded by the generosity of our Alumni; we encourage you to participate by making a gift of $500 or more to

the “Adopt a Student ” program. Join us in supporting a student's progress through this emergency assistance program.

Founders’ Day Mass

October 9, 2015 One of the poignant moments of this year’s Founders’ Day Mass was the witness to Commitment to God’s Service. During Mass, Development Associate, Sister Feliz Gil-Jimenez, former teacher and principal, renewed her profession of vows as a Felician Sister. Mr. Samuel Torres, Principal and his wife, Mrs. Maggie Torres, Director of Academic Support and International Students renewed their marriage vows to each other and to our God. All three celebrants were congratulated by the priest celebrant as well as faculty, students, staff and guests, many of them alumni. In addition to these guests, were Felician Sisters from St. Joseph Convent in Pomona as well as Sister Mary Jolene, the Regional Director of the Felician Sisters. After Mass, the Sisters and all of the guests, faculty, staff and students were treated to a special brunch in honor of the celebrants, Mr. and Mrs. Torres and Sister Feliz.

Traditions – Old and New – at a glance…

“New Beginnings” – Aug. 25, 2015 – The Freshmen enjoyed a day of getting to know one another, building friendships and developing a new bond of sisterhood. The day is also designed to help them get to know their school better, and give them a group of juniors and seniors to ask questions and get answers at their retreat. After a series of three, small group talks, prayer and reflection, they have lunch together in the Rose Garden. After lunch they met in their first all-class meeting to select class name, colors and symbol. “Footprints” – Oct. 22, 2015 – The Sophomores go off campus for the day and follow a program designed on the poem, “Footprints in the Sand”. They look at where their lives are going, and try to see how Jesus has traveled with them, alongside or sometimes carrying them. We look at daily challenges and recognize the importance of decision-making strategies. The day uses the Stations of the Cross and Adoration as important moments of prayer and reflection. “The Masks We Wear” – Nov. 16-17, 2015 – The Juniors travel to an overnight retreat facility, and allows the students to further consider the unique qualities and characteristics that God has blessed them with, and how they can embrace and use these gifts in the call God has for them. It often takes great courage to be the person God is calling us to be. Other activities further encourage them to accept each of their sisters, and recognize what is special and unique about one another. “Kairos”—Sept. 28-Oct.1, 2015 – The senior class spends four days away at a retreat facility in the mountains. The Kairos Retreat is a four-day retreat off campus, where students spend the time reflecting on the theme, "God's Time". Over the course of the four days, the students hear talks, join discussions, pray and reflect upon the call in their lives to hear God's call and respond as Christians, and especially they examine that relationship in regards to preparing for college and adult life. Kairos is in design and content, an Ignatian retreat. The seniors also spend time in worship to God through music, nature, liturgy and adoration.

Doctor Iven in Concert at Damien High School

Pomona Catholic was well represented when students were addressed by Dr. Iven and his crew during a recent concert held at Damien High School. As usual, Dr. Iven invites members of the audience to perform with him during the course of the concert. Our student body was proud to applaud two of their own as each came forth to sing a solo.

ASB Club Day

September 17th

The ASB officers and their moderator, Mrs. Sylvie Virgen, set up an enticing introduction to the various clubs on campus. They set about getting posters and club paraphernalia as well as registration information from the club moderators. The end result, students got involved and joined the clubs of their choice. Of course they were made aware that because we are a commuter school, club meetings are held during lunch. The new members also learned that many clubs have a service component, thus requiring some of their free time to carry out that portion of their membership. But, as we know, traditionally, our PC students rise to the occasion.

Face Painting at Casa Colina

December 21, 2015

Following traditions is always heartwarming and enjoyable; but can it be a challenge? Perhaps yes. Pomona Catholic’s Rotary Interact Club had been visiting Casa Colina Children’s Rehabilitation Center for years. There had been a long hiatus. The tradition was re-introduced about five years ago when the current moderator, Miss Navy Phay, took her Interact club members to the center to do a ‘face painting’ party. The students delight in hearing the squeals and stories that the young patients share with them while painting each child’s face. These students give up an evening of their Christmas vacation time to gather their paints and brushes to bring joy and laughter to children that perhaps otherwise would have a less joyful memory of their days before Christmas. We are very proud of our students for the public witness they give as Christian ambassadors responding to God’s call to “do unto others…”

Respect Life Month

October 2015

Campus Minsters and the Life4Life Club were quite active in raising awareness of pro-life issues. The entire month is dedicated to Respect for Life. Every Tuesday students and faculty gathered to pray the rosary for pro-life issues. The week of Oct. 26-30 was Respect Life Week, with lessons in every religion class and many cross-curricular lessons in other classes addressing life issues such as abortion, euthanasia, immigration, death penalty, mental illness, disabilities etc. During this month, Campus Ministers sponsored a “Baby Bottle Drive” and collected $865 that was given to a Choices Women’s Resource Center, in Pomona. A Blood Drive for LifeStream was held on Oct. 21st, and we were able to collect 31 pints of blood, most of which will be used in San Bernardino county medical facilities.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Prayer

Service –

Celebrating our Mothers

December 11

A tradition revived over five years ago, has seen beautiful changes and additions as the Pomona Catholic Hispanic Honor Society has been organizing a procession with the image of Our Lady as well as bouquets of flowers. The honor society presents a special power point depicting the origin of the apparition at Tepeyac. The students share the explanation of the event both in English and Spanish, concluding the service with a special hymn to Our Lady of Guadalupe. To enhance the celebration, the society treats the student body to tamales. churros, hot chocolate and other assorted hot beverages.

third Annual Alumni Mixer – January 30, 2016

On Friday morning, the school auditorium looked like it looks any other day…until the Alumni Mixer committee walked in and did their magic! They created a splendidly welcoming homecoming atmosphere that warmed everyone’s heart. The refreshments were wonderful and the company was fabulous! We’re proud and happy to report that we had graduates ranging from the fifties to the 2000’s… One of the attractions of the evening was a line dance session led my Mary Miller ’10, Alice Miller, ’13 and Sister Desire’ Findlay. A major drawing card for the ‘90’s grads was this year’s MC’s: Ms. K, Athletic Director, Coach, and mentor to many and math teacher and softball coach, Mr. Roger Wallace. You know PC, we tap into everyone’s talents, hidden or otherwise and we all share the wealth. All who attended had a great time. We hope to see you again next year!

Pomona Christmas Parade

Many of our students represented Pomona Catholic at the annual Christmas Parade sponsored by the city of Pomona. Many marched as a group carrying our school banner. One of the high lights of the evening was seeing our Home Coming Court riding in an open convertible, following behind the floats.

Our Pomona Catholic varsity cheer squad represented our school at the annual USA SoCal Competition. Our girls competed against several schools and showed everyone what they could do … bring home the trophy for first place in the Varsity Cheer non-tumbling division. This is the second year that they competed in this competition. We are very proud of our squad and we are proud of the spirit they bring to all of our PC events.

From the Drama Department

First semester Drama offered play goers a new experience when Ms. Stith staged the fall play, Shakespeare’s Two Gentlemen of Verona in the middle of the auditorium – with audience closely seated on three sides. Mr. Torres arranged to have a beautiful wooden floor delivered as the acting space, and actors entered and exited from two of the auditorium doors over which hung royal blue and purple banners. Just as on Shakespeare’s original Globe stage, the set was minimal – simple items representing a change of place, such as a log for the forest and a sewing basket for a woman’s personal chamber. Throughout the evening, characters spoke directly to audience members in asides and comic soliloquies – at times within a foot or two of guests. The audience enjoyed the comically wise servants and gentlemen’s silliness. For the first time PC middle school students were invited to participate, portraying Robin Hood – like outlaws. All had a laugh-filled evening. The middle school drama class also presented a Christmas program in December. Spring semester activities will include Comedy Improv Feb. 6; Jesus Christ Superstar March 10 – 12, and the Cal Poly Shakespeare Festival in April. Ms Stith also completed her second full length play, Lessons Unplanned, a comedy about teachers, which will be produced this summer as an alumni production for performance in late August.
