Stories abound of reading hearts and exorcisms, but Vianney’s first miracle was ge ng ordained. Difficulty with studies delayed him, promp ng the rector’s apology to the bishop, “So far to ordain just one, especially this one!” The bishop, who could not know he was ordaining the future patron saint of parish priests, replied, “No burden to ordain one good priest!” In Ars, only an elderly handful a ended Mass, “praying,” one told Vianney, “for a priest with brains.” But he stayed forty-two years, fulfilling the promise he made the day he arrived. LEARN ABOUT DEVOTION TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS AND THE GRACES

THAT COME FROM OBSERVING FIRST FRIDAYS— F F A 7 It is no wonder, therefore, that our predecessors have constantly defended this most approved form of devo on — the pious devo on of the faithful toward the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus [and] the custom of receiving Holy Communion on the first Friday of every month at the desire of Christ Jesus, a custom which now prevails everywhere.—Pope Pius XI Miseren ssimus Redemptor What’s so special about First Fridays? Our parents grew up going to church every First Friday of the month and taking part in Sacred Heart devo ons, but in recent decades the pious prac ce has fallen out of prac ce, and is dismissed by some as an “old-fashioned” anachronism. A main reason for the decline in interest in this devo on is probably rooted in simple ignorance: people don’t know what First Fridays are all about; families and parishes may not have adequately passed down their importance to the next genera on. Here are five things to know.

How did the First Friday Devo on begin? While some saints referenced the Heart of Jesus in their wri ngs even centuries earlier, in 1673, a French Visitandine (Visita on) nun named Margaret Mary Alacoque had visions of Jesus, wherein he asked the Church to honor His Most Sacred Heart. In par cular, Jesus asked the faithful to “receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecu ve months.” The request was connected to a specific promise made to all who venerated and promoted devo on to the Sacred Heart. A er Margaret Mary’s death, the First Friday prac ce steadily spread in the Church — endorsed by popes and promoted by saints — but it greatly increased in popularity when Margaret Mary was canonized a saint in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV.

2. Why nine consecu ve months? The number nine is tradi onally associated with a novena and finds its origin in the nine days that the apostles spent in prayer before Pentecost. A novena provides an extended amount of me for prepara on and interior renewal.

3. What am I supposed to do on First Fridays? Go to Mass and receive Holy Communion with the inten on of honoring Christ’s Sacred Heart. If you are not in a state of grace, and thus unable to receive, you will also need to go to confession.

4. What are the “promises” connected to this devo on? Jesus said to St. Margaret Mary, “In the excess of the mercy of my heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecu ve months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.” This means that if a person faithfully receives communion for nine consecu ve months on First Fridays, Jesus will grant that person extra graces at the me of their death, making it possible to repent of their sins and receive the last rites (if needed).

This promise is the last of 12 promises connected to the Devo on to the Sacred Heart, par cularly a ached to the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart in one’s home: (1) I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life. (2) I will establish peace in their homes. (3) I will comfort them in all their afflic ons. (4) I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death. (5) I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings. (6) Sinners will find in my heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy. (7) Lukewarm souls shall become fervent. (8) Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfec on. (9) I will bless every place in which an image of my heart is exposed and honored. 10) I will give to priests the gi of touching the most hardened hearts. (11) Those who shall promote this devo on shall have their names wri en in my Heart. (12) I promise you in the excessive mercy of my Heart that my all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays in nine consecu ve months the grace of final perseverance; they shall not die in my disgrace, nor without receiving their sacraments. My divine heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment. 5. Are the First Fridays a “ cket” to heaven? It is not as simple as going to Mass for nine months and then clocking out, never going to Mass again and leading a sinful life! The en re purpose of this devo on is to draw a person closer to the heart of Christ. If a person fulfills these obliga ons with sincere faith, it is natural for he or she to be closer to God and be er prepared for death.The moment that this devo on is observed in a supers ous manner, neglec ng the need to live a virtuous life, all bets are off and Jesus’ promise is null and void. Jesus wants us to rest on his heart, like St. John, and the First Friday devo on is an opportunity for us to encounter him more than just on Sundays and to deepen our love of him.

GDY NIEPOKÓJ O PRZYSZŁOŚĆ STAJE SIĘ OBSESJĄ To normalne, że niepokoimy się o przyszłość, zwłaszcza wtedy, gdy jest ona niepewna. Niemniej jednak, należy uważać, by nie trawić całej swojej energii na lęk przed wydarzeniem, które może, ale nie musi nastąpić, ryzykując przy tym utratę radości i pokoju serca. Istnieją dwa rodzaje niepokoju. Niepokój pozytywny, który ujawnia nasze pragnienie Boga, Jedynego, którego naprawdę potrzebujemy w życiu. Św. Augustyn wyraża to w ten sposób: „Uczyniłeś nas dla siebie, o Boże, i niespokojne jest serce nasze, póki nie spocznie w Tobie”. Niepokój negatywny rodzi się ze sprzeczności, jakie nas zamieszkują i trudności, jakich doświadczamy

w życiu. Ten rodzaj niepokoju często sprawia, że tracimy pokój i radość serca. Jest on w samym sercu duchowej walki, którą należy wydobyć na światło dzienne. Wskazówki przydatne do prowadzenia tej walki To normalne, że takie niepokoje się pojawiają. Jezus uprzedził nas, że „ciasna jest brama i

wąska droga, która prowadzi do życia, a mało jest takich, którzy ją znajdują!” (Mt 7, 14). Lęk, widziany w tej perspektywie, ukazuje się jako brama wiodąca do życia, jako powtórne narodziny i najpewniejszy punkt graniczny naszego życia duchowego. Tymczasem św. Ignacy wyjaśnia, że wydarzenia czy okoliczności nigdy nie pozbawiają nas pokoju serca. Przyczyną jest zawsze oddalenie od Chrystusa, spowodowane właśnie przez niepokój, który z kolei zrodziły w nas trudności. Miesza się w to diabeł, który próbuje przykuć naszą uwagę i zająć nasze myśli licznymi troskami. Jego celem jest odwrócenie naszej uwagi od obecności Jezusa. Św. Piotr daje nam dwie wskazówki na temat tego, jak prowadzić tę walkę: „Mocni w wierze przeciwstawcie się [diabłu]” (1 P 5, 9). A także: „Wszystkie troski wasze przerzućcie na Niego, gdyż Jemu zależy na was” (1 P 5, 7). Z kolei św. Franciszek Salezy podkreśla: „Nie szukajcie pocieszenia w Bogu, ale Boga pocieszenia” i dodaje: „Niepokój jest największym złem, zaraz po grzechu”. Jak twierdzi, jest on czymś więcej niż pokusą; niepokój otwiera drzwi wszelkim pokusom. Jezus sytuuje zresztą „troski życia” na tym samym poziomie co obżarstwo i pijaństwo! (Łk 21, 34) To dlatego św. Paweł zachęca nas: „O nic się już zbytnio nie troskajcie, ale w każdej sprawie wasze prośby przedstawiajcie Bogu w modlitwie i błaganiu z dziękczynieniem! A pokój Boży, który przewyższa wszelki umysł, będzie strzegł waszych serc i myśli w Chrystusie Jezusie” (Flp 4, 6-7). Łaska zawierzenia Nie chodzi tu o zachętę do pasywności czy kwietyzmu. Chodzi o to, by z całym zaufaniem oddać się w ręce Boga: „Ojcze, powierzam się Tobie…” (Karol de Foucauld). Co do przeszłości – wrzucamy ją do pieca Jego miłosierdzia. Co do przyszłości – zawierzamy ją Jego Opatrzności, wiedząc, że „wierny jest Bóg i nie dozwoli [nas] kusić to, co potrafimy znieść, ale zsyłając pokusę, równocześnie wskaże sposób jej pokonania, abyś[my] mogli przetrwać” (1 Kor 10, 13). Takie zawierzenie pozwoli nam wówczas przeżywać chwilę obecną z łaską Chrystusa, wiedząc, że „On mocą [swoją] działającą w nas może uczynić nieskończenie więcej, niż prosimy czy rozumiemy” (Ef 3, 20).

6 sierpnia – SWIĘTO PRZEMIENIENIA PAŃSKIEGO Święto to pojawiło się na chrześcijańskim Wschodzie już w V stuleciu i było obchodzone 6 sierpnia. Wybór daty nie był

przypadkowy, nawiązuje bowiem do 6 stycznia. Wtedy to wspominamy pierwsze wielkie

objawienie Pana Jezusa podczas chrztu w rzece Jordan. Liturgia rzymska wspominała tajemnicę Przemienienia w drugą niedzielę Wielkiego Postu, łącząc ją bezpośrednio z tajemnicą męki i śmierci Chrystusa Pana. Na Zachodzie pierwszą wzmiankę o sierpniowym święcie posiadamy z X wieku. Dalszy rozwój święta związany jest ze wzrostem czci miejsc świętych w Palestynie w dobie wypraw krzyżowych. Papież Kalikst III w 1457 r. - na znak wdzięczności za odniesione zwycięstwo nad Turkami pod Belgradem - wprowadził święto do kalendarza Kościoła powszechnego. Ma ono uświadomić ludziom wierzącym głębszy sens tajemnicy Chrystusa. Góra Tabor, na której dokonało się Przemienienie Chrystusa, znajduje się w północno-wschodniej części doliny Ezdrelon. Wysokość góry wynosi 562 m n.p.m. i 780 m nad Jeziorem Galilejskim. Nazwa góry - Tabor była już dobrze znana przed przybyciem Żydów do Ziemi Obiecanej. Różnie tłumaczy się sens słowa „Tabor”. Dla św. Hieronima nazwa ta oznaczała „przychodząca światłość”. Inni tłumaczą tę nazwę jako: czystość, wysokość, pastwisko, pulpit, stolarz, rzemieślnik. Od XII wieku Tabor jest nazywany przez Arabów Dżebel et-Tur. „Tur” to słowo aramejskie, zachowane w języku arabskim. Oznacza ono górę, jednakże pełna nazwa znaczy „Góra gór”. Historyczne Przemienienie Jezusa na oczach uczniów było potwierdzeniem, że jest On Synem Człowieczym, którego jako króla wszystkich narodów oglądał w proroczym widzeniu prorok Daniel. Jezus Chrystus jest zapowiedzianym Mesjaszem - Synem Bożym, do którego należy władza i wieczne królestwo.

PIERWSZY PIĄTEK MIESIĄCA Najbliższy piątek, 7 sierpnia to Pierwszy Piątek miesiąca. Spowiedź święta od godz. 6:00PM do 7:00PM. Msza św. o godz. 7:00. Nabożeństwo I piątków miesiąca- Obietnica zwycięstwa Praktykę pierwszych piątków miesiąca większość z nas zaczęła wraz z Pierwszą Komunią św. Są tacy, którzy od tego momentu co miesiąc chodzą do spowiedzi i przyjmują z miłości do Jezusa Komunię św. wynagradzającą. Są też tacy, którzy tę praktykę porzucili. Wspominając św. Małgorzatę Marię Alacoque warto przypomnieć sobie znaczenie pierwszych piątków miesiąca. „wielka obietnica” Ostatnia z obietnic otrzymanych przez św. Małgorzatę Marię znana jest także jako „wielka obietnica”, ponieważ jest ona najważniejsza dla naszego zbawienia. Jezus wyraził ją tymi słowami: „Z nadmiernego miłosierdzia mego Serca obiecuję ci, że wszechmocna miłość tego Serca wszystkim przystępującym przez dziewięć z rzędu pierwszych piątków miesiąca do Komunii św. da ostateczną łaskę pokuty tak, że nie umrą w stanie Jego niełaski ani bez sakramentów świętych i że Serce moje będzie dla nich bezpieczną ucieczką w godzinę śmierci”. Podstawowym warunkiem praktyki pierwszych piątków jest przystępowanie do Komunii św. przez dziewięć kolejnych pierwszych piątków miesiąca. Nie można ani zmienić dnia przyjęcia Komunii św., ani przerwać kolejnych dziewięciu piątków. Potrzebna jest również właściwa intencja. Jest nią miłość i wynagrodzenie Sercu Jezusowemu oraz pragnienie przyjęcia Komunii św. według intencji Jezusowego Serca: by otrzymać łaskę śmierci w stanie zjednoczenia z Panem Bogiem. Jest to szczególnie ważne dla osób często lub codziennie przyjmujących Komunię św. Bez tej intencji, uczynionej na początku praktyki, która potem może być ponawiana w każdy pierwszy piątek, nie można powiedzieć, że się ją właściwie odbyło. Dlatego też dla pewności, że otrzyma się owoc tej pobożnej praktyki, warto ją powtórzyć kilka razy w swoim życiu. Komunię św. należy przyjmować w stanie łaski uświęcającej. A couple of weeks ago here, while discussing how Jesus says “Whoever has ears ought to hear” three separate mes as told by Ma hew, I spoke of a priest who once told me that whenever Jesus says the same thing repeatedly, we had really be er pay a en on. OK. By extension, then, I think we had all really pay a en on to today’s Gospel, because this story of Jesus feeding the five thousand with five loaves and two fish is the only of Jesus’s miracles that is covered by each of the Gospel writers. Ma hew writes about it (today’s Gospel text). Mark writes about it. Luke writes about it. John writes about it. Think about that. Only Ma hew writes of Jesus calming the storm at sea. Only Mark writes of Jesus curing the deaf/mute man. Only Luke writes of Jesus cleansing the ten lepers, and of course, only John writes of Jesus changing that water into wine. But all four write of the loaves and fish. Per a footnote in my Bible, “The principal reason for that may be that it was seen as an cipa ng the Eucharist…” But what intrigues me most here (in any of versions) is that we never really see anything mul plied, even though this story is o en referred to as the mul plica on of loaves and fish. In my Bible, Ma hew’s, Mark’s, and Luke’s telling is en tled “The Feeding of the Five Thousand.” Only John’s telling gets the “Mul plica on” nod. A small detail, but a detail. A bigger detail is that only in John’s account does Jesus feed the crowd (“Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those

who were reclining”). In the other three accounts, Jesus gives the bread to the disciples, who in turn feed the crowd [“Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds” (this is Ma hew, and the Mark and Luke accounts are similar)]. And this detail takes on greater importance when we consider in the Ma hew/ Mark/ Luke accounts what Jesus says when the disciples first tell him of the plight they’re all in (lots of people, late in the day, deserted place, no food). Because this is when Jesus directs the disciples in all three accounts the very same: “Give them some food yourselves.” It’s funny that in the end, this is exactly what happens. Jesus gives bread to the disciples; the disciples give bread to the thousands. But in none of the accounts are we shown Jesus mul plying a single crumb. Not even John’s account, which, as noted, is named as such. I don’t doubt that the Gospel writers all tell this story “an cipa ng the Eucharist,” and I don’t doubt that a miracle occurred that day. I’m just not sure of which miracle. It could be that Jesus truly did mul ply and divide. But as an alterna ve miracle, maybe he just showed us that those in need of God’s care can count on us, for when we share what we have--albeit sparse--we find that everyone not only has enough, but more than enough.
