    Head Coach

    Larry Krystkowiak was introduced

    on April 4, 2011, as the head men’s

    basketball coach at the University

    of Utah and the man to lead the

    Runnin’ Utes into the Pac-12

    Conference.

    Aer ghng through a 6-25 season

    in 2011-12, Krystkowiak (pronounced

    krist-KOH-vee-ak), has had a full yearto recruit, and establish the program

    as his own with a new culture and

    atude.

    Krystkowiak has prior head coaching

    experience in the NCAA, CBA and

    NBA, le a posion as an assistant

    coach with the New Jersey Nets to

    become the 15th head coach in Utah

    men’s basketball history.

    In his previous collegiate head

    coaching post, Krystkowiak led

    his alma mater, the University of

    Montana, to a 42-20 record and two

    NCAA appearances as the Grizzlies’

    from 2004-06 before joining the NBA

    coaching ranks. Hired as an assistant

    coach by the Milwaukee Bucks in

    2006-07, “Krysko” was elevated to

    head coach with 17 games remaining

    in the season. He was retained as the

    Bucks’ head coach in 2007-08. Amongthe players he coached was former

    Ute All-American Andrew Bogut.

    Krystkowiak’s other head coaching

    experience was in the CBA with the

    Idaho Stampede in 2003-04.

    Aer a nine-year NBA playing career

    in six cies, Krystkowiak’s rst

    coaching job was as an assistant

    coach at Montana from 1998-2000.

    The Grizzlies

    were the

    Big Sky

    champions

    in 2000. He

    then moved on to Old Dominion as an

    assistant in 2001-02 before signing on

    as the head coach of the CBA’s Idaho

    Stampede. In his lone season with the

    Stampede in 2003-04, he led the team

    to a 38-14 record and a berth in the

    CBA Finals.

    Krystkowiak spent the next two

    seasons as the head coach at Montana.

    The Grizzlies were Big Sky champions

    in 2004-05, winning the conference

    tournament and earning an automac

    bid to the NCAA Tournament. They

    appeared in the Big Dance in 2006

    as well, earning an at-large bid and

    Huntsman Center in 2006. It was

    UM’s rst NCAA Tournament win

    since 1975. Montana nished theseason with a 24-7 record, aer going

    18-13 in Krystkowiak’s rst season,

    losing to No. 1 seed Washington in

    the NCAA First Round.

    The only three-me Big Sky MVP

    in league history and two-me

    Academic All-American for Montana

    from 1982-86, Krystkowiak is sll

    the school’s all-me career leader in

    points (2,017) and rebounds (1,105).

    He was selected in the second round(28th overall pick) of the 1986 NBA

    dra by the Chicago Bulls and played

    in the league for nine years with San

    Antonio (1986-87), Milwaukee (1988-

    92), Utah (1992-93), Orlando (1993-

    94), Chicago (1994-96) and the Los

    Angeles Lakers (1996). Over his NBA

    career, he averaged 8.1 points and 4.1

    rebounds a game with his best season

    in 1988-89 when he averaged 12.7

    points and 7.6 rebounds a game for

    Milwaukee.

    Krystkowiak made the Dean’s List

    four mes at Montana, including

    in 1996, when he completed the

    degree he began over a decade

    earlier in business administraon. He

    graduated with honors, boasng a 3.5

    grade point average.

    Krystkowiak and his wife Jan have ve

    Coaching Staff 

    ASSISTANT COACH 2ND/6TH YEAR

    TOMMY CONNOR

    Tommy Connor is in his second year as a

    Utah assistant coach under Krystkowiak. It

    is his second stint with the Utes, following

    four years as an assistant coach under Rick

    Majerus from 1994-97. Connor, a former

    Utah player (1986-88, 1990), returned to

    his alma mater after a very successful 12-

    year stint as the head coach at Westminster

    College (NAIA).

    Connor was a four-year starter forthe Runnin’ Utes at point guard. Aer

    graduang with a B.S. in Exercise and

    Sport Science, he spent three years as

    a Graduate Assistant and another four

    years as an assistant coach at Utah under

    Majerus. During his me on the bench,

    Connor helped guide Utah to the NCAA

    Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight as well

    as the NIT nal four, while capturing

    four Western Athlec Conference

    championships.

    In a stellar 12-year career at Westminster,

    Connor led the Grins to a 264-114

    (.698) overall record, while proving even

    more dominant in

    Froner Conference

    play with a 126-40

    (.759) mark. Those

    numbers become

    more impressive

    when considering

    that Connor built the

    program from scratch

    aer it was reinstated

    prior to the 1999-

    2000 season.

    Under Connor,

    Westminster

    posted 10

    seasons with

    at least 20 wins, including nine straight

    from 2002-2011. The Grins have won

    seven regular-season Froner Conference

    championships and two conference

    tournament tles. Connor is a ve-me

    Froner Conference Coach of the Year and

    his teams qualied for nine NAIA Naonal

    Championship appearances.

    Connor coached 17 players to NAIA All-

    American status and had one NAIA Naonal

    Player of the Year. The Grins also had ve

    players named Froner Conference Player

    of the Year and saw 36 players earn all-

    conference honors. Westminster was also

    successful in the classroom as 44 players

    earned NAIA Scholar Athlete honors and

    108 players were named Academic All-

    Froner Conference. Westminster led the

    naon with the most NAIA Scholar Athletes

    in back-to-back years from 2009-2011.

    Kathryn for 24 years. He has a son, Jake

    (16), and two daughters Sydney (14) and

    Cass (11).

    ASSISTANT COACH 2ND YEAR

    DEMARLO SLOCUM

    DeMarlo Slocum is in his second year as an

    assistant coach with the Utes and is known

    as a primetime recruiter. Prior to joining

    Krystkowiak’s staff, Slocum spent three

    years in the same position at Colorado

    State.

    In his three seasons at CSU, Slocum

    worked primarily with the guards and

    shared recruing responsibilies. Before

    coming to Colorado State, Slocum servedas an assistant coach at the University of

    Idaho.

    Prior to joining the Idaho Vandals, Slocum

    was the head coach of the Las Vegas

    Prospects AAU team for ve years. During

    his tenure, the Prospects were ranked

    among the top ve AAU teams on the

    west coast. Slocum has worked at various

    collegiate basketball development camps

    across America, as well as the West CoastAll-Star Camp and the Adidas Superstar

    Camp.

    Slocum, a

    served one

    season as

    an assistant coach at Dixie State College

    before moving on to the University of

    Southern California to become the Trojans’

    Director of Basketball Operaons. In one

    season with USC, Slocum was in charge of

    on-campus recruing, team travel, scoungand camp coordinaon.

    As a student-athlete, Slocum spent two

    years at Dixie State before playing his nal

    two seasons at Georgia Southern, where

    he earned a degree in public recreaon/

    kinesiology in 2001. During his junior

    season at Georgia Southern, he was the

    team’s second-leading scorer, before

    nishing fourth in scoring as a senior.

    Coaching Staff 

    Andy Hill is in his second year as an

    assistant coach with the Utes. He came

    to Utah from Montana, where he spent

    seven years in the same role, including two

    seasons under Krystkowiak.

    In his seven seasons at Montana, Hill

    helped the Grizzlies to three NCAA

    Tournament appearances, most recently

    in 2010, as well as a CBI bid in 2011.

    Montana also reached the Big SkyConference Tournament championship

    game in four of his seven seasons. In Hill’s

    two years under Krystkowiak from 2004-

    06, Montana went 42-20 and earned

    an NCAA Tournament berth both years,

    advancing to the second round in 2006.

    Among Hill’s dues at Montana were

    assisng with scheduling of games,

    coordinang camps, on-court coaching

    and recruing. Addionally, he wasinstrumental in coordinang the annual

    coaching clinics and also worked closely

    with the fund-raising eorts of UM’s

    Roundball Club.

    Hill served as

    a graduate

    assistant

    coach during

    the 2003-04

    season at Eastern Washington, which won

    the Big Sky Conference that year. While at

    EWU, Hill was involved in the promoon of

    the Eagles’ camps and assisted in recruing

    as well.

    During the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons

    Hill served as an assistant at Lewis-Clark

    State College in Lewiston, Idaho. In his

    two seasons, the Warriors advanced to

    consecuve NAIA Naonal Tournaments.

    He was also an assistant coach and

    recruing coordinator at Whitworth

    College in Spokane, Wash., during the

    2000-01 season.

    Hill graduated from Eastern Washington in

    2000 with a degree in educaon.

    Support Staff 

    Norm Parrish is in his second year as

    Utah’s Director of Basketball Operaons.

    Parrish joined the Runnin’ Utes aer 20

    years as the head basketball coach at Salt

    Lake Community College. It is Parrish’s

    second snt with Utah, aer serving one

    year as a graduate assistant under the late

    Lynn Archibald in 1988-89.

    Parrish guided SLCC to unprecedented

    success, including a 20-win season in 2011

    and a trip to the Region 18 championship

    game. In 2009, the team won the NJCAA

    naonal championship, the rst in school

    history, along with its second consecuve

    Region 18 championship. Parrish received

    the 2009 NJCAA Naonal Coach of the

    Year award for his eorts. In 2008, he

    coached the Bruins to a rst-place nish

    in the Region 18 tournament and a

    runner-up nish at the NJCAA naonal

    championships.

    A ve-me Region 18 Coach of the Year,

    Parrish also led the Bruins to the 2000

    SWAC regular-season championship. In

    1994, just his third season as head coach,

    Parrish steered SLCC to the Region 18

    Tournament tle and a h-place nish at

    the NJCAA naonal championships. Parrish

    nished with a career record of 447-198

    (.693), eclipsing the 20-win mark 14 mes.

    Under Parrish’s stewardship, SLCC had

    20 NJCAA All-Americans and 24 NJCAA

    Academic All-Americans. Nearly 50% of his

    players have moved on to compete at the

    NCAA Div. I level, with several now playing

    professionally in the NBA and overseas.

    In his me at SLCC, Parrish recruited

    and coached players from all over the

    United States and many foreign countries,

    including Greece, England, Turkey,

    Australia, Switzerland, Brazil, Russia,

    Serbia, and the West African countries

    of Senegal, Cameroon, and Ivory Coast.

    Returned LDS missionaries were also an

    integral part of his recruing process.

    Before coming to Utah under Archibald,

    Parrish was an assistant at Nampa High

    School in Idaho, coaching football and

    basketball. Parrish played his collegiate

    ball at Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho) in

    Rexburg, and then at Northwest Nazarene

    College in Nampa.

    Parrish earned his Bachelor ’s degree from

    Northwest Nazarene in 1987 and received

    a Master’s from Utah State in 1993. He

    and his wife Kaye have three sons, Travis

    (21), who is serving an LDS mission in

    Singapore, Ma (18) and Collin (14).

    Phil Cullen returns to his alma mater

    as the Director of Player Development

    and Camps following a three-year snt

    as an assistant coach at Grand Canyon

    University.

    Cullen played for Utah from 1998-2002

    and helped the Utes to a 90-35 record

    during that span, including a 28-5 mark inhis freshman year. One of the Mountain

    West Conference’s top 3-point shooters

    during his career, Cullen can sll be found

    in the Utah record books ranked sixth

    in career 3-pointers made (153) and

    3-pointers aempted (396).

    Cullen received his bachelor’s degree in

    civil and environmental engineering from

    Utah in 2006 and earned his master’s in

    leadership from GCU in 2012.

    Cullen and his wife, Tara, have a daughter,

    Josie.

    Sco McByrne is in his second year as

    the Video Coordinator for Utah Men’s

    Basketball. McByrne originally joined the

    Utes midway through the 2011-12 season

    aer spending two seasons with the New

    Jersey Nets of the NBA.

    With the Nets, McByrne was an assistant

    video coordinator under head coach Avery

    Johnson from 2010-11 and an intern unde

    previous head coach Lawrence Frank,

    from 2009-10. During the 2010-11 season

    McByrne also worked alongside current

    Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak, who

    was then an assistant coach with New

    Jersey. Other notable coaches McByrnehas worked with include Popeye Jones, De

    Harris, John Loyer, Sam Mitchell and Kiki

    Vandeweghe.

    McByrne is originally from Newtown,

    Pennsylvania, where he aended Council

    Rock High School South and was captain

    of the basketball team. He earned his

    bachelor’s degree in Secondary Social

    Studies Educaon from the University of

    Tampa in 2008.

    Athletic Trainer14th Year

    Trevor JamesonStrength Coach1st Year

    Charles Stephenson

    Trevor Jameson is in his 14th year as an athlec trainer with

    the University of Utah. In 2008, he also accepted the posion

    of Director of Sports Medicine for the Utah Athlec Training

    program. His primary responsibility is working with the Runnin’

    Ute basketball team.

    Before coming to Utah, Jameson spent four years as an assistant

    athlec trainer and instructor at DePauw University in Indiana.

    In addion to working with DePauw athletes, Jameson assisted

    in the development of the department’s CAAHEP accredited

    athlec training educaon program and provided clinical

    instrucon for students.

    Prior to his appointment at DePauw, Jameson worked as a

    graduate assistant trainer at Indiana State University. Jameson

    received his master’s degree in athlec training from Indiana

    State in August of 1996 and earned the Outstanding Professional

    Award for his graduang class.

    Jameson received his bachelor’s degree in physical educaon

    and athlec training from Brigham Young University in 1995. He

    worked in the Cougar sports medicine department for over two

    years.

    A Utah nave, Jameson graduated from Taylorsville High School

    in 1987. He and his wife, Angie, have ve children: Tui (17),

    Moevanu (16), Malia (15), Tavita (13) and Masina (11).

    Charles Stephenson joins the Utah men’s basketball sta as the

    rst basketball-specic strength coach in the program’s history.

    Stephenson brings nearly 25 years of experience as a strength

    coach at the collegiate level. Most recently, he was the strength

    coach for men’s basketball at North Carolina State from 1996-

    2011 and previously held the same posion at Auburn from

    1994-96. Prior to Auburn, he was an assistant strength and

    condioning coach at the University of Virginia from 1987-94.

    Stephenson earned his master’s degree in exercise physiology

    from UVA in 1989 and did his undergraduate work at the College

    of William & Mary, graduang with a bachelor’s degree inphysical educaon. Stephenson and his wife, Diane, have four

    children, Tyler, Shea, Quinn and Carsyn.

    ATHLETICS DIRECTOR / SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT 25TH YEAR

    DR. CHRIS HILL

    Dr. Chris Hill has spent the last quarterof a century developing Utah athlecsinto a naonal player. Among his manyaccomplishments was his instrumentalrole in Utah’s invitaon into the Pac-12Conference in the summer of 2010.

    Hill, just 37 years old when he was

    appointed as Utah’s director of athlecs in 1987,

    has been at the helm of the department for two

    BCS bowl wins, nine NCAA team championships

    (four by the gymnascs team and ve by the

    ski team) and NCAA runner-up nishes in men’s

    basketball (1998), football (2008), gymnascs

    (2000, 2006, 2007, 2008) and skiing (eight total).  He has hired three coaches who became

    a Naonal Coach of the Year in their sport:

    football coaches Urban Meyer (2004) and Kyle

    Whingham (2008), and men’s basketball coach

    Rick Majerus (1998).

    Hill, himself, has received naonal acclaim,

    most recently as one of ve 2011 nalists for the

    presgious Sports Business Award for Athlec

    Director of the Year by SportsBusiness Journal  

    and SportsBusiness Daily . He was also the 2011

    Naonal Associaon of Collegiate Directors of

    Athlecs (NACDA) Under Armour West Region

    Athlec Director of the Year.

      Hill has served on several naonal

    boards, including the NCAA Division I Men’sBasketball Commiee (2004-09), chair of the

    NCAA Championships/Compeon Cabinet

    (1997-98) and the NCAA Management Council

    Administrave Commiee. He was on the

    NACDA’s execuve commiee from 2002-06.

      Among the events leading up to Utah’s

    historic invitaon to join the Pac-12 were BCS

    bowl wins over Pi in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl as

    the rst team from a non-automac qualifying

    conference to play in a BCS bowl game, and over

    Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl. The Utes are

    11-4 in bowl games during Hill’s tenure.

      Utah’s other athlec programs have

    also thrived under his leadership. The men’s

    basketball team has played in 13 NCAATournaments—advancing to the Sweet 16

    ve mes and the Elite Eight twice. In 1998,

    the Runnin’ Utes advanced to the NCAA

    Championship game against Kentucky. The

    women’s basketball team has 15 NCAA

    appearances, playing in the Sweet 16 twice and

    the Elite Eight in 2006. The gymnascs team

    leads the naon in NCAA Super Six appearances

    with 18—all during Hill’s term—and was the

    aendance leader for all women’s sports in

    2010 and 2011.

    boys’ basketball at Salt Lake’s Granger High from

    1975-79 (he was the 1975 4A Coach of the Year)

    Hill returned to the U. as an assistant coach to

    Jerry Pimm (1979-81). From 1983-85, he taught

    in the University’s special educaon department

    before coming back to athlecs as the Crimson

    Club director (1985-86). In 1987, he became the

    director of athlecs.  Hill was the execuve director of United

    Cerebral Palsy of Utah from 1981-85, during

    which me he developed a housing project for

    people with severe physical disabilies.

      Hill’s awards, in addion to those listed

    previously, include: 2011 Utah YMCA Man of

    the Year, 2004 Mountain West Conference’s

    Commissioner’s Award, 1981 Milton Bennion

    Fellowship, 1984 Utah Recreaon Therapy

    Associaon Outstanding Service award and

    1996 Utah MS Sportsperson of the Year. Hill

    was inducted into the Jersey Shore Hall of Fame

    in 1998. In 2001, the Naonal Consorum

    for Academics and Sports gave Hill its Degree

    Compleon and Outreach and CommunityService Honor Award.

    He currently serves on the Catholic

    Community Services Board of Directors.

    As an undergraduate, Hill won three leers

    in basketball at Rutgers and co-captained the

    1971-72 team. His bachelor’s degree from

    Rutgers is in math educaon (1972). He holds a

    master’s in educaon (Utah, 1974), and a Ph.D.

    in educaonal administraon (Utah, 1982).

    His wife Kathy, a faculty member in

    the U.’s Department of Special Educaon in

    severe disabilies, received the 2010 College

    of Educaon Service Award and the 2012

    ASUU Student Choice Award for Excellence

    in Teaching. They have two children, Aly andChristopher; two granddaughters, Addie and

    Lily, and a grandson, Jack.

    Aly played soccer for the University of

    Oregon and has a master’s degree in social work

    from Utah. She is a social worker and teacher

    for students with disabilies in the Salt Lake City

    School District. Christopher has a bachelor’s

    degree in organizaonal communicaon and a

    law degree from the U.’s S.J. Quinney School of

    Law. He is employed by the Pac-12 Enterprises

    in San Francisco and is engaged to Darci Motoki

    DAVID W. PERSHING, PH.D

    David W. Pershing proudly celebrates more than three decades of

    service to the University of Utah. Named Utah’s 15th President in

    2012, President Pershing serves as the university’s chief execuve

    leading a diverse team of faculty and sta at one of the world’s top

    research universies.

      President Pershing joined the University of Utah as an Assistant

    Professor of Chemical Engineering in 1977. He was named a Presidenal

    Young Invesgator by the Naonal

    Science Foundaon in 1984, became

    Dean of the College of Engineering

    in 1987, and named a Disnguished

    Professor of Chemical Engineering

    in 1995. In 1998, Dr. Pershing was

    named Senior Vice President for Academic Aairs responsible for

    approximately 1,000 faculty and 25,000 students in the colleges

    of the main campus. Now as President, Dr. Pershing connues his

    commitment to the undergraduate experience with new iniaves and

    programs aimed at enriching academic excellence on campus.

      A gied teacher and prolic researcher, President Pershing is

    the recipient of the University of Utah’s Disnguished Teaching and

    Disnguished Research Awards and the U’s Rosenbla Prize forExcellence. He has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publicaons,

    won more than 20 research grants totaling approximately $60 million,

    and earned ve patents. He was named Engineering Educator of the

    Year by the Utah Engineering Council in 2002 and is a winner of the

    Governor’s Medal for Science and Technology. He was director of

    the University of Utah’s Center for Simulaon of Accidental Fires and

    Explosions, fueled by a $40 million grant from the U.S. Department of

    Energy.

      President Pershing holds a bachelor’s degree from Purdue

    University and a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona, both in chemical

    engineering.
