HistoryIn 2002 a group of friends got together to start a company that reflected their shared vision: headwear should be more than an accessory. We saw an opportunity to provide accessories that took fit, fashion, and function equally seriously, and looked at headwear as an extension of you, your identity and your lifestyle. Design wasand still isthe main factor of every style, from the color and yarn / material type, to the way we brand each piece and most importantly the fit and look when worn. Today we continue to strive to create the best possible headwear out there. Its all about design, uncompromising attention to detail, and superior components.

MissionCoal was founded on the belief that headwear is more than an accessory. Its part of you, your identity, and your lifestyle. We build this idea into each of our designs by using quality materials and exacting detail, crafting styles that are as unique as you are.

An offering inspired by the region where Coals roots are firmly planted. We are proud of our north-west heritage, which informs everything we do when creating the spring and summer collections. We stay cozy and warm all winter, but when even the slightest bit of sun shinesit is time to let loose. Northwesterners start shedding layers when the sun comes outsometimes losing their sanity along the waygetting into all sorts of fun and sun-fueled mischief. The spring and summer collections are inspired by spring hikes with a chance of rain, the search for swimming holes with friends old and new, and staying up way too late because no one wants the party to end. As always, Coal puts fit, comfort, and function at the forefront of all of our designs. The LoreDeep in the heart of the forest dwell creatures once thought to be the stuff of legends. We have taken photographs of these creatures and rendered meticulous embroideries in their likeness. Our all-purpose, 5-panel cap presented in a true DIY fashion: The Richmond 5-panel cap paired with a specially sized bar of Otter Wax, created exclusively for Coal. Otter Wax enables custom weatherproofing of your cap through the simple application of a wax bar.

Born and bred in St. Johns, Michigan on blue-collar principals, Mark Welsh chose skateboarding over Little League, setting himself apart from his peers through a life long love of all things anti-establishment. Mark picked up his first camera at the age of thirteen, shooting photos of his friends skateboarding and the local lifestyle. At sixteen with his strong Americana roots intact, Mark ventured out into the world and found himself in Japan. He fell in love with the language and culture, spending the next decade studying Japanese and photography, traveling back and forth from the US to Japan. Upon a friends suggestion to move to Salt Lake City, Mark found the doors open to snowboard photography. Suddenly travel, friends and fun were combined into a tangible means of work.

Mark has contributed to countless publications and collaborated with com-panies such as Chorus, L1, Coal Headwear, Nitro, Smith Optics, Dakine and Quiksilver. He continues to apply his working mans ethic while pushing his photography into a broader spectrum with a constant evolution of vision. He has pushed the limits of his profession while keeping his feet firmly planted on the ground, inspiring those around him to pursue what they love as he contin-ues to do the same in unexpected ways.

Glossary

USA Wool FeltOur US-made wool felt hats are made by a manufacturer that has been around for over 100 years. They have perfected the art of making wool felt fedoras, bowlers and other highly crafted headwear. The wool they use comes from Texas and goes through a rigorous process where the raw wool is first formed into loose cone shaped bodies. From there the cones are treated with pressure and hot water repeatedly; this combination of the pressure and heat begins to felt the wool fibers. The felt becomes tighter and denser as the process continues. Once the bodies are ready for use they are blocked by hand, the brims trimmed and shaped, and the final trims, lining and labeling applied.

Recycled cotton Our recycled cotton yarn comes from a mill that special-izes in repurposing waste from the apparel manufacturing process. The yarn is spun from re-milled fabric scraps and clippings. The base color of the original material is retained therefore less dyes and chemicals are used in the process. In addition the yarn has a heathered effect due to the mix of different scraps.

Cotton Linen BlendIntroducing a novel twist on marled yarns for Spring 16. Cot-ton and linen have been blended together yielding a yarn that is both soft and summery. A warm natural color is blended with punchy brights that yield a more subdued, multidimen-sional color effect.

USA Made ProductsWe are proud to make a variety of our products with US based suppliers, from beanies to beautifully crafted wool felt hats to fun embroidered patches. Our vendors have shared their time-honored techniques and expertise, providing us the opportunity to make top quality products in the United States.

Special Edition (SE)The letters SE are peppered throughout the collection. They identify styles that are special projects with some of our favorite people. We have partnered with team riders, artists, photogra-phers and craftsmen to create unique styles that capture our combined influences.

This logo throughout our catalog indicates a Coal Considered style. Considered pieces are classically inspired with a modern twist, where no detail is overlooked. In our Spring & Summer 2016 Collections we are excited to introduce new limited edition collaborations, as well as innovative designs and fine materials, from domestic wool felt to recycled cotton.
