Adults that are in denial. The social stigma of chemical dependency & use within their faith communities. A general reluctance to talk about use/abuse within their own families and within their congregation. Or, gossip and negative talk about people. There is a need to start a dialogue in faith communities, and to reduce the stigma for people dealing with these issues.

Educate our faith leaders by giving them information and resources for people seeking assistance. Appoint one person as the leader (“go-to person”) for chemical health issues in a faith community. Interfaith training or dialogue and information sharing among leaders of various faith communities. Education of parents. Using young adult mentors, youth in recovery. Presenting positive “contracts” for use – providing a positive view instead of the “thou shalt nots” and focus on how fun and rewarding a sober life can be.

Funding (ex: Mini-Grants are available to members of the faith sector). Resources (ex: Chemical Health Resource Guide) Relationships – MN Teen Challenge Interfaith Organizing - Organize and Sponsor a faith leaders gathering & training.

• ?)@2$&2)7&$+2$'"42%4-%49$"-1$'",,+/"1+2%"46 Develop a faith subcommittee – Seeking leaders and participants to help organize. Develop a list of key players in the community. Hopkins Ministerium – One Voice will have speakers attend the next meeting. Present a formal statement/rationale for Faith communities regarding their responsibility towards their congregations. Outreach - The 12-step meetings that go on – are there people in those (members or not) in order to provide support to HCC mission? Investigate a FaithConnect outreach newsletter, raise visibility in local faith communities. Provide written materials and resources for faith communities Training for clergy and leaders in the community. $

III. Coalition Updates: 10:45-10:55am • Mini Grants (Brenda)

Mini-Grant projects underway during the 09-10 school year include: Start up funds for the youth groups SPPA and Better Ways; Funds for giveaways to the elementary schools (bookmarks, pencils, arm bands); Funds for Better Ways Red Ribbon Week; Funds for stall holders “classroom to the bathroom” project at HHS. Currently under consideration also is a request on behalf of MN Teen Challenge to fund speakers at the Elementary level, and a request from the Hopkins Police Department to fund compliance checks for local liquor & tobacco license holders.

• Social Marketing Campaigns – Two campaigns developed during the Summer Marketing Internship

at HHS. “Better Ways” and “Your Voice Your Choice.” Posters are available if you want to see them or have some please let us know!

• Student Groups @ HHS and Junior Highs (Denise, Marit) Better Ways Group update: 30 kids on the email list, meet at 7 a.m. every Friday. Participated in Red

Ribbon week, posted signs with statistics about use in HHS, now sponsoring a poster contest at the Elementary Schools & PSA for Great American Smokeout to follow. Winners will come to HHS to make a tv commercial.

Jr. High Level – NJH SPPA developing a new shirt “Life is my High” Working with Tobacco Free Youth Recreation and received a grant for student training. The goal is to have tobacco-free parks in Mtka and Hopkins. Students will work to pass an ordinance and change public policy. Trainings will occur throughout the year. 10-13 students also working on the topic of marijuana use in the junior highs. Brainstorming on how to reach out to their peers. At WJH trainings are also going on. Small group going to the Shutting Off the Tap to Teens conference.

• Parent Education updates (Cathy & PICs) Piggybacking on other parent events with prevention messaging Sponsorship of Sparks Community Book Read ParentConnect Newsletter OneVoice Parent Advisory Group Parent Meetings at the Junior Highs

Website – Lots of great information and Resources Video & Speaker’s Kit – For anyone who wants to make a presentation to their group Brochures – From Dept. of Human Services, Drug-Free America, etc. Topics include substance use, and abuse, mental health, and parenting.
