December Notes from the Director

Happy Holidays! Before we say farewell to 2018, we have some great programs scheduled for

December that you won’t want to miss! On December 4th we will be hosting a special program in the

morning about Coping with the Holidays after a Loss. In the afternoon on the 4th, join us for Live

Well Watertown’s Healthy Eating Program about winter soups. On December 7th we will celebrate the season at our

annual Holiday Party at the Hibernian Hall. Take a break from your shopping and stop in on the 14th for our Mellowtones

Concert, and join us on December 18th when Diane Shufro, our Chair Yoga instructor, will transport us through her

recent trip photos and lively discussion to the warm continent of South America.

Do not hesitate to contact us for help with fuel assistance and SNAP applications, emergency assistance requests, and

information about the Watertown Food Pantry. If you need to go grocery shopping or to the Watertown Mall, consider riding

our Senior Shuttle Bus for $1.00 round trip. Call us for details about these and many more services available to seniors.

A sincere thank you to the Friends of the Watertown Council on Aging for their support of many of our programs throughout

the year. If you are interested in becoming a Friend or volunteering your time and talent in the New Year, please contact us.

Happy Holidays, and we all wish you good cheer in the New Year!

COLUMN

with

MARINA KIRSANOVA, LSW

Elder abuse happens every day, but

holidays can present a greater risk.

People who are physically, emotionally

or psychologically frail and dependent

on others for care are most at risk of

elder abuse. Abuse and neglect can

happen in the home, as well as in

residential care or nursing homes and

hospitals. It can involve care workers,

family, neighbors, friends or strangers.

People most at risk at home include:

anyone with an illness that affects

memory or ability to communicate;

those in a poor relationship with their

caretaker; those who provide housing,

financial or emotional support to the

caretaker; those who depend on a

caretaker with drug or alcohol problems;

the socially isolated.

The annual visit with family and friends

during the holidays is a good

opportunity to check in with elders to

see if they are being treated with care

and respect by everyone in their life.

If you yourself are witnessing or

experiencing harm through abuse or

neglect, or are worried about a friend,

relative or client, there are ways to help.

You may call Marina at the Watertown

Senior Center, the Police Department or

Protective Services in your area. Your

confidentiality is assured.
