Principal’s Message
As we begin the final eight weeks of the school year, we have many activities that have just completed and many more that are beginning. April saw the Speech Fest, Groove Dance, Track Attack, and numerous fieldtrips. These activities were all brought to the students through many staff members volunteering their time in and out of school hours. This month will be equally busy with Track and Field Practices, Mini-‐meets and the District Track Meet. Please remind your children to come prepared to participate and remember to thank the coaches who make these activities possible. Interim Reports/Early Dismissal – Thursday May 7 @ 1:27 p .m. This week you will be receiving an interim report on your child prior to the final report card in June. These reports can be by way of student led conferences, parent meeting, written reports sent home or by a telephone conference with the classroom teacher. Thursday May 7 is an early dismissal (1:27p.m.) that has been set aside for student led conferences or parents to make appointments to come in and meet with teachers. Please call the school to make an appointment. If you are not available on the 7th, please contact the classroom teacher and/or learner support teacher (LST) to arrange another convenient time to discuss your child or to have an Interim Report sent home.
Chocolate Campaign Thank you to all of the Coast students and families who made the PAC
chocolate fundraiser so successful. All of the funds from these events directly help your children.

Speech Fina lists Congratulations to our Speech Finalists in our school Speech Fest. It was absolutely amazing to have such well crafted speeches delivered with poise and confidence from elementary students. Much to the delight of our students, our former principals, Mr. M’Lot and Mr. Rogers, returned to Coast to act as judges along with Mrs. Starr. They listened to twelve class finalists deliver their speeches in front of the school audience. Although a difficult choice, it was decided that the three finalists in the school contest were: 1st Place -‐ Neeta Kalair (Gr.7) “Healthy Living” 2nd Place – Tanya Chaudhary (Gr. 6) “Peer Pressure” 3rd Place – Riya Badesha (Gr. 4) “Being the Youngest in the House” Congratulations to all students who participated in the bi-‐annual Speech Fest at Coast. Track and Fie ld
Our track and field training began last week with 3 Track Attack sessions, that were enjoyed by all
students in Grades 3 – 7. Practices will continue this week, for interested students, in preparation for the District Track Meet at the end of May. Some of the practice times are before school, during lunch and after school so students need to have parent permission to attend the practices. These notices can be picked up from their activity coach and extra notices will be available at the office. Please remind your child that it is their responsibility to know when their practices are. The District Track and Field Meet for medium schools is at Bear Creek Park on Wednesday May 27, but there will also be a ‘Mini-‐meet’ scheduled for mid May at William Watson.
Jump Rope for Heart It is spring and that means we look for ways to have fun and exercise outside! At Coast Meridian we will once again have our annual Jump Rope for Heart skipping event. We are campaigning by making it a whole-‐school event – all of the classes will be outside skipping on
Friday, June 5th at 1:50 p.m.
We have enough ropes for the students but your child is welcome to bring in a personal skipping rope if they would like to do so. Beginning June 1st, each student is encouraged to bring in a Toonie that we will contribute to the Heart and Stroke Foundation for their research and continued work on educating people about heart disease. As an appreciation for making this annual contribution, our school receives a selection of fitness supplies from the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Thank you for supporting this endeavor again this year.
Water Bottles In keeping with good health, and our effort to become a water only
school, thank you to the many families who have sent their child to school with water bottles. This is especially important with the onset of warmer weather to keep kids hydrated and comfortable. We have a bottle refilling station in the front area by the office so students can replace the water throughout the day with fresh filtered water. Also remember that many of the bottles are the same style or similar, so please be sure to mark your child’s name on the bottle so it can be returned if left outside of the classroom.
Do you have a 3 or 4 year old or have a neighbor with a 3 or 4 year old?
Once again, we are hosting a fun event for 3 and 4 year old children on Tuesday May 12 from 9:00 – 10:30. There will be activities, play, dance and a special gift bag to send home with each child. Please contact the school (604-‐574-‐6036) to register for this fun activity or pass this information on to a neighbor who may be interested.
Are you registered for kindergarten at Coast Meridian?
We will be having a Welcome to Kindergarten event for students to come to the school on Tuesday May 12 from 12:30 – 2:15 p.m. to meet the kindergarten teachers and participate in lots of fun activities that will prepare them for kindergarten in September, 2015. Each child who attends will receive a special gift bag with lots of fun things inside, which has been made just for them. Please call the school to register. Moving over the summer We are in the process of looking toward staffing for next year. So much of our planning relies on enrollment being as accurate as possible. Although we hate to say goodbye to anyone, If you know that you will be moving out of the area over the summer, or are not planning to have your children attend at Coast Meridian next year, please let the office know as soon as possible.
Requests for Special Placements
At this time of the year many parents approach teachers or me, with requests for their child’s placement for next year. A great deal of discussion and consultation between the teachers occurs prior to each and every student placement. Teachers discuss the strengths, challenges and overall learning style of the student before putting them into certain groupings.
As a result, I do not encourage specific class requests; however, I also realize that sometimes there are special considerations and concerns about their child’s learning needs that parents would like to express. In such a case, please provide me with an educationally sound rationale for your child’s placement request. Examples that are not normally considered educationally sound include a request for a specific teacher or a single grade class. Dressing for school With warmer weather approaching, students are reminded that clothing should be appropriate for school and learning:
o Tops should have straps that are at least two finger widths wide (no spaghetti straps) o Bra straps and undergarments should not be visible. o Tops should be long enough to cover the stomach area and cover the waistband of pants or shorts
while the student is sitting on the floor (if the midriff is showing when one arm is raised it is too short)
o ‘Muscle’ shirts are not appropriate o Messages/pictures on clothing must be appropriate for all ages o Skirts and shorts should be an appropriate length so that students can sit, bend and walk comfortably o Flip Flop sandals, while not restricted, have resulted in numerous toe injuries and falls both inside
and out on the playground
Thank you, parents, for taking time to ensure that your child comes to school dressed appropriately for learning. Community Information: Located at the Surrey RCMP Main Detachment 14355 – 57th Avenue Surrey, B.C.
