Water-inyournewplants.Overthefirstsummertheymayneedanoccasionaldeepwatering,butnomorethanonceaweek.Aftertheirfirstsummer,theyshouldcopeonrainfallalone.Priortosevereheatwaves,giveyourplantsathoroughwatering,sowaterpenetratesdeepintothesoil.

Youraimistoestablishstrong,deeprootsystemswhicharewater-efficientanddroughttolerant.Over-wateringleachesnutrientsfromthesoilcreatingexcessivegrowth,lessfloweringandshorter-livedplants.

Alayerofmulchaddedtoyourgardencanreduceevaporativewaterlossbymorethan70%!1Organicmulchkeepssoiltemperaturesdown,whichbenefitsrootdensity,suppressesweedgrowth,andhelpstopromotegoodsoilstructureandproductivity.

Fertilisersaren’tusuallyneededwithlocalnativeplants.Ifyoudecidetofertilise,seekadvicefromyourlocalnursery,asproductswithhighlevelsofphosphoruscanharmsomelocalnativeplants.You’llwanttoavoidrapidgrowththatmakesyourlocalplantsleggy,weakandshort-lived.

Pruningisbeneficialformanylocalplants.Mostspecieswillappreciatealighttrimtokeeptheirshape,promotenewgrowthandencourageflowering.Pruningisbestdoneafterflowering,usuallylatespringorearlysummer.Youngplantscanbeprunedlightlyandregularly.Olderplantscanberefreshedwithamoreextensivepruneafterflowering.Replaceoldplantsthatdieorbecomestraggly.

Pottedlocalplantsneedalittlemorecarethanthoseplantedoutingardens.Wateryourpotplantsmoreregularlyinsummer,andapplyalow-phosphorusfertiliserinspringandsummer(checkwithyourlocalnurserywhichproductisbest).Don’tover-applyfertiliserasitcanharmlocalnativeplants.Someplantsmayneedre-pottinginthefuture.
