I’m really not fond of getting my hair cut. Usually not happy with the way it turns out. So, I always wait until I can’t stand it anymore, then just run to that big place in the mall-the one with the loud mu-sic, bright lights and pink-haired stylists-to get it done. Then, I’m usually not happy with the way it turns out, again. Think there’s a word for doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result! It’s sort of the same way with quilting. My stash is full of blenders, solids and batiks. I love those luscious bright prints and florals in other people’s quilts, but always go back to the basics. I definitely have my comfort zone. That probably holds true for a lot of you, too. This new year, wouldn’t it be fun to make some resolutions that we might actually enjoy keeping? How about challenging ourselves to do something completely different, or something we’ve never done be-fore, with our quilting? Doesn’t that sound a lot more exciting than trying to lose 20 pounds or organize the sewing room, again? Maybe you like doing traditional pieced quilts; so why not try modern, or that appliqué you’ve always wanted to tackle, or paper piecing? And, if you’ve never entered a quilt into a show, it just so happens we have one coming up in September! Remember, entry forms are due July 21 and quilts on August 18, so it’s time to get busy. The Worship Committee at FUMCMC is looking for someone with experience in cleaning and repair-ing needlepoint pieces to rework 32 kneelers, located in the church’s main sanctuary. Some are stained and/or have silverfish damage, and all need to be disassembled, cleaned, stain treated, re-stuffed, re-stretched and sewn back with the trim on the bottoms. This would be a compensated (paid) job. If you have the skills needed, or can recommend someone who does, please contact Kay Tunnell, di-rectly, at [email protected]

Please contact Rebecca Trevino, our new Bee Keeper, if you are an aspiring Queen Bee and would like to start a new bee. Let Rebecca know the details of your bee, and it will be included in the upcoming schedule. Please consult the calendar below for our bee days/times for January. For the RSVP bees (in green), all you need to do is contact the queen bee and let her know you would like to come on a particular date. If you need additional information about a bee, or want to chat, please contact Rebecca either by phone (H) 832-363-3951 or by e-mail: [email protected].

Hello! My name is Dana Comer, and I will be collecting your quilts for the 2016 Quilt Show’s online auction. If you’re still sitting on the fence about exactly what you want to do for your quilt show en-try, and have a few UFO’s taking up much needed space in your sewing room, why now pull them out and finish them and donate to the auction? I find that I get some great inspiration for my NEXT project while working on a project (isn’t that how UFO’s happen in the first place?). So get them out, get them finished, and get them into MY hands so you’ll have more space to work on your PAWQ(s) (Potential Award Winning Quilt(s)).

You can give them to me at the evening meetings, or contact me via email to set up a time to do a handoff. I’m at [email protected] Please put “Online Auction” in your subject line so it won’t get lost in my inbox.

On January 21st, Heidi Pridemore will give a workshop on the Ribbon Twist Pattern. I have a sam-ple of the quilt that I will have at the January 6th night meeting. The cost of the workshop is $35.

On Saturday, February 6th, Jackie Hillman is giving a workshop on Steps to Better Finishing. This is a great workshop to help us finish our quilts for the quilt show. The cost of the workshop is $30, which includes a $2 pattern fee. The workshop will be held at the First United Methodist Church in the Music Room starting at 10:00.

I have supply lists for both workshops and you can pick up one when you sign up or download it from the Guild's website.

Workshops By Martha Baldwin

Our speaker for the January 6, 2016 evening meeting will be Teresa Wong. Teresa will be speaking on Japanese Inspired Quilts. She has a trunk show of quilts and will present a slide show of beauti-ful quilts, antique and contemporary. She will be available to sign and sell her new book Japanese Contemporary Quilts and Quilters – The Story of an American Import. This should be a very inter-esting meeting – don’t miss it!!!

Our speaker for the January 21, 2016 day meeting will be Heidi Pridemore (she will be on the Quilt-ers Emporium cruise). Heidi will be speaking on Tips and Tricks on Piecing. This will be a VERY helpful presentation. She will be holding a workshop in the afternoon.

Are you looking for ideas for the Scrap Happy Challenge for our 2016 quilt showcase? If so, check out some of the books found in our library. Scrap Happy: Quick-Pieced Scrap Quilts by Sally Schneider has 13 quilts made from half-square triangles, quarter-square triangles, strips and/or squares. Scrap-happy Patchwork by Nancy Zieman has 3 quilt ideas. One is made from strips and a few triangles. The other two require you to use your imagination and creativity with a few simple guidelines. Scrap Quilting Made Easy by Sandra Hatch has small, medium and large quilts, as well as vests, gift bags and holiday-themed items. In the book Simple Strategies for Scrap Quilts by Lynn Roddy Brown you will fine eight blocks. Two different quilts are made with each of the eight blocks. If you are looking for something bold and unusual you may want to try one of the 15 quilts in Spectacular Scraps: A Simple Approach to Stunning Quilts by Judy Hooworth and Margaret Rolfe. All the quilts are made with half-square triangles. They are just put together in many different ways.

I found a website I had not used before that has free patterns, sewing and quilting info and tutorials.

The proposed by-laws were passed at the December meeting. Barbara Elliott will be glad to e-mail

you a copy of the directory with updated changes.

If you start out the new year by cleaning your sewing studio, any donations in good condition or fab-

ric for door prizes would be appreciated.

Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild Minutes of the November 3, 2015 Board Meeting

(Approved at December 1, 2015 Board Meeting)

The meeting was called to order by Barbara Wall, President, at 1:30 p.m. at the Keegan’s Woods Commu-nity Building. Board members in attendance: Barbara Wall, Helen Wilems, Barbara Elliott, Katherine Onstott, Martha Baldwin, Pauline Manes, Susie Doe, Lisa Patterson, Debbie Garner and Barbara Young. A quorum was present. Committee members in attendance: Carol Ann Barley and Julie Dayton. The Minutes of the October 6, 2015 Board Meeting were approved as presented. The November Treasurer’s Report (reporting through Oct 31, 2015) was approved as presented. PRESIDENT’S ANNOUNCEMENTS Barbara Wall began by reminding everyone on the board and committees that we all need to take responsibility for cleaning up after the meetings and taking any items left from the church. OLD BUSINESS

New Member Orientation - The next New Member Orientation has been scheduled for Wednes-day, November 11th from 6:30 – 8:30 in Rm 258 at FUMC. All board members and committee chairs are asked to attend as hosts. Carol Ann Barley has sent out paper invitations in the mail to all new members joining within the past year, and Barbara Elliott will continue to send out e-mail reminders to the invitees.

Charity Projects for FUMC - The Food Drive at the church will finish as of our Novem -ber 4th evening meeting. The church has been very happy by the donations made to date. The Seafarer’s Project will continue to accept knitted/crocheted scarves through November 19th.

Richmond Heritage Center - Pauline Manes announced that the participation of the guild in the Heritage Center’s October activities at Kitty Hollow Park’s DeWalt House was very well received.

Audit Committee - The Audit Committee has been unable to meet due to family and health com-plications during the past month, but plans to present the Audit report at the next business meet-ing on November 19th.

NEW BUSINESS

Board Meeting Location – It has come to the attention of the guild that the Keegan’s Woods Com-munity Center may become unavailable as a location for board meetings in the future as our member liaison there has been ill and may be moving away from Keegan’s Woods. This may also affect the Tuesday Sugar Land Bee as well. Barbara asked that everyone be thinking about other possible meeting locations for our board meetings.

Show & Share Request - A member has asked that persons showing quilts at Show and Share should be required to say who quilted the item(s) being shown. After short discussion it was de-cided that the guild will not require this information be included as part of a member’s discussion of their Show & Share piece, but that we would attempt to make it known that members are inter-ested in knowing who quilted the quilt. Also if a quilter wishes their quilting to be credited they should be responsible for telling the owner of the quilt that she/he would like to be acknowledged specifically at Show & Share.

New Magazine Chairperson Needed - Our current magazine chairperson will be moving out of the area soon, so a new Magazine Chairperson will be needed. After some discussion of the re-sponsibilities of the job, Debbie Garner volunteered to take over. The current stockpile of maga-zines will be sifted through by various board/committee members and returned to Debbie at the next meeting.

Member Payment for Services Rendered - Barbara Wall brought up for discussion the guild policy regarding paying guild members for services rendered, specifically as it relates to paying for

Page 11: Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild Of Texas · ary 6, 2016 evening meeting will be Teresa Wong. Teresa will be speaking on Japanese In-spired Quilts. January 2016 Volume 8, Issue 5 Coastal

speakers. While our 501(c)(3) status requires that no member shall benefit financially as a result of their membership, this does not preclude members from being compensated for appropriate services rendered. The board agreed that if a member is a bona fide speaker (i.e. acting regularly as a contracted speaker) then he/she may be paid as a guild speaker if duly contracted with the guild.

BOARD REPORTS President-Elect – Helen Wilems Nothing to report.

Programs – Katherine Onstott Jo Lynn O’Neill, our November speaker, has cancelled her engagement with our guild due the death of her husband. Katherine and Martha Baldwin have chosen to plan a Charity Sew-In day for No-vember 19th. After the regular business meeting we will adjourn to Music Rooms A&B to sew quilts for our chosen charities, including Quilts of Valor (this sew-in will replace the regularly scheduled Quilts of Valor Sew-In which would have been held on November 28th). The board approved spending some of the monies budgeted for speaker fees to buy sandwiches and chips for Sew-In participants.

Membership – Barbara Elliott Barbara reported that at this time we have 138 paid memberships. She also reported that the di-rectory is ready to go to print. The board agreed that 200 copies should be printed. It was agreed that we ask members if they are interested in an electronic version of the membership list. Since programs and workshops, Officer & Committee Lists, and By-Laws and Standing Rules are all post-ed to the website, it was suggested we might consider distributing our Membership Directory electroni-cally in the future.

Workshop Chairman – Martha Baldwin See report under Programs above.

Treasurer – Pauline Manes Nothing to report.

Secretary – Susie Doe Nothing to report.

Representative-at-Large – Barbara Young A member has contacted Barbara indicating that she felt that the meeting notifications were being sent out too early. The board determined that e-mail notices are being handled in an appropriate man-ner and no changes are required.

Editor/Advertising – Jennifer Pazicni Nothing to Report.

Program Chair-Elect – (Lisa Patterson) Lisa brought it to the attention of the board that our scheduled night meeting for November 2, 2016 falls on the date of Preview Nite for the International Quilt Festival. The board agreed that we should not plan a program for that evening. Lisa reported that she has begun contacting possible speakers. To date she has heard back from the booking agent for Angela Walters. She has discussed the possibility of sharing Ms. Walters’ travel costs with Chris Genkins’ Shop. January 2017 is being considered. Workshop Chair-Elect – (Debbie Garner) Debbie indicated that she had collected leads for interesting workshop/program ideas while at-tending the International Quilt Festival. QUILT SHOW (Julie Dayton) Julie reported that the Quilt Show Co-coordinators plan to meet again in December and a full Quilt Show Committee Meeting will be scheduled in January.
