Hopefully you have viewed the new PCA website. With it came many new innovations that make PCA information and services more immediately accessible. For example, in the past, new membership data came to us with, at least, a month’s lag time This made timely contact with new members troublesome. Now, via the new website, we will be able to track membership data on a real-time basis. Certainly, other improvements will become more evident as our familiarity with the new site grows.

For the past few years, CCCR’s Webmaster, having moved to another region, has been physically remote. Eriel did a good job on our website considering the distance and remoteness. However, maintenance and immediate updating of our website were sometimes delayed due to his remoteness. Recently, the Board of Directors felt it was time to bring it back into our own backyard with an in-house Webmaster, someone in the mainstream of the club’s activities and information. Guess who? Hence and until further notice, yours truly will assume the duties of CCCR Webmaster.

That being said, I offer a disclaimer: “Master” is a bit of stretch. My techy skills beg the definition of “geekdom.” Nonetheless, I intend to regularly update our calendar and links to our current newsletter and other important information items. New features will include event pages, discussion forums, member’s bios, videos, and feature articles. As with the digital newsletter, there will be no limit on text, images, or pages. Hopefully, the new format will be a little easier to navigate, and our webpage will serve you better.

The URL and access links through PCA remain the same. There is much work to be done, but take a look. If you have not already, please bookmark the URL on your browser and checkout the website on a regular interval for updates and new features.

Well here we are in June already, 2014 is racing by us (excuse the pun), I hope most of you have had an opportunity to experience at least one of our many club events this year. If you have not then fear not, we have a lot coming up that are just as good as what we already have had. This month don’t miss the SLO Concours at Madonna Meadows, it will be another great event to participate in. See page 20 for more details. Coming up on July 13th, is the Gathering of Friends car show, so be sure to sign up your car now. See page 10 for more information. This is one of our premier events that is lots of fun and has good food too. The Teststrecke Porsche VII is coming up on July 26th as well, so be sure to sign up to run this great autocross, the second one this year.

The biggest thing happening in June, of course, is the Porsche Parade up in in Monterey. I hope to see many of you there, it is a great time to mingle and talk shop with other Porsche owners. Having it happen this close

to us is very rare so don’t miss the chance even if its just for a couple of days!

Autocross Academy and Competition April 26 and 27

Sometimes when I tell folks that I do auto-cross, they look at me quizzically and ask if I race motorcycles on very bumpy dirt tracks. I explain that motorcyclists do motocross. Autocross is for automobile drivers who avoid safety cones and the dirt. And then I get more questions. Not many folks know much about autocross. On April 26, CCCR optimistically tried to improve the local knowledge base by offering an autocross academy.

Led by Tom Dobyns, one of our newest members and most respected local drivers, the academy was attended by 30 eager students and a dozen expe-rienced instructors. The morning started early in the Jet Center’s hangar at the Santa Maria Public Airport. Coffee and donuts preceeded Tom’s in-teractive instruction with an entertaining style that kept everyone enthusiastically engaged for 90 minutes. Students grew eager to try their expanded knowledge on the course.

For the rest of the morning, student drivers with assigned instructors practiced hard brak-ing, controlled skidding, and slalom exercises. Most of the students had never experienced this level of their car’s capabilities beyond the challenge of normal street driving. Many were heard saying something like, “I didn’t realize that my car could stop that fast!”

After a lunch break, each student drove 9 runs through the full autocross course. Instructors rode along until they felt the student was ready for solo runs or until their motion sickness got the best of them. By the end of the day, students were asking when they could attend the next academy. Smile muscles were as well exercised as the accelerators and brakes on their cars.

Most students returned on Sunday for a day of timed competition. In all, 52 drivers competed for the best time in their class. Student drivers from the day before ran faster times, had fewer enocoutners with safety cones, and grew bigger, broader grins. One fellow was overheard remarking that his wife was now only about 2 seconds behind his time. Unlike his wife’s, his grin had diminished just a bit. This two-day event literally came off “without a hitch”, the result of careful planning. Much thanks to Tom Dobyns, Jon Milledge, Eric Ruzius, Andrew Winterbottom, Warren White, Gary Enoch, Bob Bruington and Dave Mills for many hours of plan-ning and coordinating. Thanks also to Joe Korpiel, Charlie Buzzetti, Graig Smith, Clint Smith, Guy Ober, Alice Ober, John Mahoney, Larry Butler, Clay Beck, and Judy and Barry Fitzjarrell.


Feature Story

The Central Coast is lucky to have an abundance of natu-ral beauty, Porsches, sunshine, and eclectic residents. One of these, the Connecticut-raised violinist and orches-tra conductor Scott Yoo, has been the Music Director for Festival Mozaic since 2005, spends about 2 months per year in SLO, and is now a member of PCA CCCR. Although beginning his musical studies at age three, and giving his first “performance” at age 4, Scott also grew up in a ‘car family’ (BMW 1600 and Porsche 944S), and by high school dad had taught him how to change the oil, and spark plugs, and that weekend outings should include trips to local Porsche and Mercedes dealers. Although, such outings were interrupted by his performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with the Boston Symphony at age twelve, a Porsche enthusiast was born.

Already a student in Juilliard’s high-school division, Scott’s most influential teacher there owned a 944 and so, naturally, they talked about cars a lot. This master violinist/motivator encouraged Scott to enter the 1988 Josef Gingold International Violin Competition in Brazil. He was 17 that summer, won the first prize of $15,000, and planned to splurge on a used 944. But mother intervened, and a “used car” was forbidden. So the 17-year-old kid, with 15K of cash in hand, walked into a Honda dealership, and met a sales-man who “clearly knew” a young drug-dealer when he saw one. Scott yearned for a yellow or red Prelude, but it was a Friday, and the only Prelude in stock was silver. A red one was coming Monday, and there was a wait-list for the yellow.

Originally, the educational plan was to apply to Juilliard and Harvard, and then see who accepted him. Mean-while, the silver Prelude faithfully took him 110 roundtrip miles to New York City every Saturday for orchestra, music theory, and violin lessons. However, fate intervened when he accidently broke his left index finger during a party cel-ebrating his acceptance to Harvard. Given the injury, for a violinist the alternative of going to a world class conservatory suddenly became a ‘scary thing.’ Scott ended up four years later with a Physics degree from Harvard, but continued a relatively busy concert schedule during those years.

In 1993 Scott founded the Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra, conducting the ensemble in its series at Jordan Hall in Boston, and also giving more than ninety perfor-mances on tour. In addition to joining Festival Mozaic, he is also Artistic Director of the Medellín Festicámara, a chamber music program for underprivileged young musicians. As the Rocky Mountain News once wrote, “The guy simply oozes music”.

A few years after college Scott bought a 1995 Lexus SC400, which he had coveted since its introduction in 1992. It gave him 190,000 trouble-free miles and is still much missed. By then, however, he was spending several months per year in San Luis Obispo, and had rapidly tired of borrowing, or ride-sharing cars around town, on an always tight schedule. Then, one fateful day in 2007, while hurry-ing down the road to a rehearsal, he spotted a red Porsche 1986 928S for sale. Although he’d never driven one, it had always been a favorite: indeed, the Lexus SC400, was mod-eled after the 928. Scott reports that Lexus engineers actually disassembled several 928s to learn more about its engineer-

Luckily the 928S could be had for $4,000, and he jumped at the chance. Thus began an extraor-dinarily gratifying, but expensive journey. After investing in the Workshop manuals, and about $7,000 in tools, Scott drove the 928S back to Missouri, where he worked on it from August to December, 2013. The intake was completely refreshed, the timing belt changed, the HVAC sys-tem, water pump, and all vacuum lines and sensors were repaired, and various electrical gremlins were sorted out. Scott notes that little of this would have been possible without the many good people on Rennlist, who navigated him through the vagaries of valve timing, rebuilding the clutch slave, oil pump, and belt ten-sioner and, one rainy day, detecting why the car kept running after the ignition was turned off.

Ten years ago, in NYC, Scott first became friends with a lovely flute player, but their first date was only two years ago, in Las Vegas. By then, Alice was a university music faculty member. So, in January, 2014 they went back to LV, married, and then enjoyed the Grand Canyon. Only a man in love would forsake the many delights of Upper East Side Manhattan for the dubious weather and landscape of a small mid-Western university town. But slowly, misgivings melted, even as the snow and ice grew deeper, and a battery tender became a vital tool. He then joined the St. Louis PCA Chapter. Finally, for a wedding present his father pre-sented the new couple with a lovely, black 1999 996.

As all Porsche owners know, as a last resort, sometimes one can only wave a ‘magic wand’ and hope to catch that annoying gremlin. Other times, you just have to search the internet for “928 Best Practices,” buy a bunch of stuff, don your shorts, haul out the tools, and get dirty. Scott can do both! Alice, and the family cat, quickly joined the fray and now coveralls, serpentine belts, and Porsche, are in balance with her career as a traveling flutist, and University Music professor.

In between buying, loving, and restoring Porsches, as a proponent of “music of our time”, Scott has premiered 60 new works by 31 compos-ers. As a guest-conductor, he has led the Colorado, Dallas, Indianapolis, New World, San Francisco and

Utah Symphonies, and he regularly conducts the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and has led their Elliott Carter Festival. In 2010 Scott made his Carnegie Hall debut with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra (yes, Virginia, it does take 10,000 hours of practice to get there). Through his travels he has met a bunch of 928 owners, and ended up buying another Porsche, a white, 1987 928S4, from a friend in Seattle. He drove it back to NYC in August, 2011, where it and Scott resided until both moved to Columbia, MO in September, 2012.

Musicians today are one-person entrepreneurs, and travel widely both to fulfill their passion, and support themselves. Scott has performed professionally in 21 coun-tries. In recent years Scott debuted with the Yomiuri Nippon Orchestra in Tokyo, and just 2 months ago he spent several weeks in Korea conducting the Seoul Philharmonic Orches-tra. He will be back in San Luis Obispo for the 44th Festival Mozaic, from July 17 to July 27.

In conclusion, our readers know that a Porsche, like a fine violin, is highly tuned, often dear of price, but also exhibits excellence, is built to last, and can generate fanatic passions. Perhaps this is all one needs to know about Scott, cars, and music.

PORSCHE TECHWhen You Get Down to It , They’re All Air-Cooled!

We all know that air runs over the cylinder’s cooling fins in the old cars, but it’s also air that actually cools the engine oil and/or the antifreeze that runs through the radiators in the newer cars, isn’t it?

Nevertheless, the one question you hear most about Porsches is “Why did they really stop making the air cooled engines?”.

Obviously, people who ask that question don’t consider the 986, 996, 997 C7, 991, C8 and 981 air-cooled. That’s OK, I get their point.

There are 3 main reasons why Porsche stopped making the “air cooled” cars. You pick which one you think is the REAL one. There’s the “Environmental/Emissions” reason, there’s the “We can’t get more power out of the darned thing” reason and there’s the not-talked-about Porsche was broke reason.

True air-cooled engines have a great advantage in that they are very lightweight when compared to water-cooled ones.Water-cooled engines have a much better power/displacement performance than air cooled.

So, when Dr. Porsche decided to use a small, air-cooled boxer engine in his newly designed Volkswagen in 1938 and also in his first Porsche in 1948 they were both very good decisions at the time. Both cars were very light and raw. There weren’t any additional

requirements other than getting from point A to point B in an enclosed vehicle (no air conditioning, no radio, no seat heaters, no power windows and power mirrors, no vanity window lights, no 12 volt outlets to power your smartphone ... wait, we’re getting way too far ahead of the times now.

But as time progressed and people demanded more and more from their cars they got heavier and required more power, whether it was for moving the added mass though city streets or for moving the mass faster on racetracks.

Eventually they got to where the engine’s displacement had grown to a point which couldn’t affordably get much better in terms of power (993). You can also see it as: Porsche wasn’t competitive anymore with the likes of BMW and Ferrari so they had to follow suit.

In 1996 the very stringent OBDII / LEV (low emissions vehicle) regulations came to the USA and the Euro3 and Euro4 exhaust emissions regulations went into effect in Europe. Simply put, the old air-cooled technology could not meet these new requirements in a cost-effective manner and Porsche was forced to re-design its power plants.

When all of this was happening, in the early 90s, Porsche’s financial situation wasn’t the best either. Let’s be honest... they almost went under!Car sales had dropped dramatically and in order to stay afloat Porsche needed and introduced an entry-level car which sold for under $40,000 ($39,995.00 in USA).

This entry-level car would also share up to 60% of its parts (including the engine block, front end, dash, headlights, doors, interior, etc.) with the new-to-market 1999 water-cooled Carrera 996, therefore reducing manufacturing costs. By producing two platforms in the same, new production line, Porsche was able to drastically reduce manufacturing costs.

This, coupled with the instant success of the Boxster, quickly put Porsche, not only back-in-the-black, but it also became one of the most profitable car manufacturers...err, excuse me, vehicle manufacturer since now Porsche is selling more trucks than sports cars.

But, if you look closely, even the trucks (Cayenne and Macan) have radiators that are cooled by AIR, so that’s why I say “they’re ALL air cooled!” ;)

CCCR-PCA Board Meeting MinutesMay 7, 2014

Meeting was called to order 6:35 pm

In Attendance: Bruce Bero, Sanja Brewer, Ken Finney, Chuck Jennings, Joe Korpiel, Chuck Stevenson, Gary Thies, Andy Winterbottom and Guest Members; Jon Milledge and Tom Dobyns

Absent: Jim Collins, Rich Halvorson, Eric Ruzius

April minutes were approved by Joe Korpiel and seconded by Ken Finney.

Historian : No report

Treasurer: We ended the month with $6,437.66. Our autocross income was $3,790.35 and expenses were $1,773.98.

Treasurer’s report was approved by Andy W. and seconded by Chuck Stevenson.

Membership : This month we have 308 Primary Members, 225 Affiliate Members and 534 Total Members. Joe sent welcome letters to 3 New Members. PCA National is on a membership drive to reach 70,000 members.

Safety: The observation report has been sent for the autocross. Registration for DE has been submitted. We will apply for insurance for the May 17, Santa Ynez Valley Horse & Mission Tour.

Driving: Buttonwillow is ready to proceed on May 9th.

Activities: Chuck Stevenson discussed the upcoming calendar of events. Bruce Berro mentioned that we only have six Porsche entries for the Porsche corral at the Concourse. We would like to see a larger participation of Porsches for this event. Vice President: Pomar Junction train ride over the grade has been paid. It is on September 6, and the cost will be $54 for one wine tasting and $59 for two. When the train returns to SLO, there will be members heading to Cafe Roma for dinner. Coastalaire feedback: No feedback yet from non-board advertisers.

President: The website is about to be transferred to the new site. When that happens, we will able to host our own site.

A suggestion was made by Ken Finney that we should start our club Facebook. This will be discussed at a later time.
