t A new vision, an updated mission, and more than 35 years of experience guiding our path

If Coastline Community College were to print a résumé, it would be lengthy and impressive. Since opening our doors to the community in 1976, our faculty and staff have served thousands of students, conferred numerous degrees and certificates, transferred countless students on to four-year colleges and universities, won buckets of awards, and hosted more events than we can remember.

Coastline is probably most well known for our efforts and accomplishments in Distance Learning education. We started

with telecourses and today offer complete associate degrees, certificates, and courses leading to transfer to students from around the world through online classes, CD/DVD-rom courses, telecourses and independent study. In fact, some of our best students are ones we have never met face-to-face—our military students. These unique and noble individuals are taking classes with us—at a distance—from bases, submarines, and aircraft carriers all over the world. And, while they are focused on serving the entire country, we are focused on serving them.

Our résumé includes vast experience in delivering classes in a unique fashion, not at a centralized campus where students have to venture to us to

Vision Statement Creating opportunities for student success.

Mission StatementCoastline Community College promotes academic excellence and student success for today’s global students through accessible, flexible, innovative education that leads to the attainment of associate degrees, transfers, certificates, basic skills readiness for college, and career and technical education.

learn, but out in the community where we bring the learning to them. We started by offering courses nearly everywhere—at senior centers, office buildings, strip malls, churches, high schools, and other neighborhood locations. In 1997, we constructed the Garden Grove Center and then, in 2005, the Le-Jao Center in Westminster. Just recently, we celebrated the completion of our third mini-campus, the Newport Beach Center. Just as it was in our early years, these campuses are located throughout the Coast Community College District to continue to serve students nearby to their work and homes.

Today, Coastline is continually on the list of “Top 100 degree producers” in the U.S. (thanks to our massive military education program) and is also the proud recipient of several other titles and awards. For example, did you know that Coastline has won 19 Emmy Awards for excellence in telecourse design, writing, and production? Coast Learning Systems, a division of Coastline Community College, has produced this award-winning courseware for nearly 40 years and continues to do so today.

Regardless of our impressive résumé, we are experiencing some challenging times. You’ve heard the story: the recession, the lost jobs, the number of people returning to college to train for a new career or to become a more

competitive candidate. Our awards and accolades are drawing students to us, and we strive to serve them all with less and less funding. Nonetheless, we at Coastline are committed to our new Vision for the college: Creating opportunities for student success. We are committed to being innovators—building new programs and services to support our students. Take, for example, our new STAR program—an accelerated transfer-focused path that gets students into a CSU in merely 3.5 semesters. Compare that to the typical time it takes students to complete their A.A. degree (4-6 years) and you’ll see how Coastline is developing programs that are a model for colleges in California and beyond.

As we move forward with that Vision in mind, we also firmly commit to the Coastline Mission, which is to promote academic excellence and student success for today’s global students through accessible, flexible, innovative education that leads to the attainment of associate degrees, transfers, certificates, basic skills readiness for college, and career and technical education.

If you believe in our Vision and Mission and want to help us to expand programs to support these leading goals, please join us as a partner and friend of the college. The Coastline Foundation offers numerous opportunities for you to get involved,

and your contribution of time, money, or talent will have a tremendous impact on current and future Coastline students. I look forward to seeing how your résumé can be partnered with ours to expand and promote higher education in Orange County.

I welcome your comments and feedback at [email protected] or at (714) 241-6153.

Warmest Regards,

Embracing advancement worldwide.

A message from the Jennifer Vaughn, President of the Coastline Foundation Board

Dear Coastline neighbors, partners, students, and supporters:

As 2012 comes to a close, I’m excited about the many successes we have to celebrate the year. Not only do we have a brand new campus in Newport Beach, but with the approval of Measure M in the recent election, the Coast Community College District will have the means to upgrade and repair our additional facilities and continue to improve and expand our capabilities. Thanks to you—local voters—Coastline will continue to thrive even in this challenging economy.

Partnerships are the key to the college’s success: Partnering with community leaders to pass a successful bond measure, linking up with local business executives and creating working advisory boards to offer students real-world training on emerging topics, and joining forces with a variety of caring, giving, and passionate local philanthropists who know that higher education should be a number one priority here in Orange County. We rely on supporters of the Coastline Foundation to not only help with donations for scholarships and program improvements, but to also help spread the word about Coastline and its mission. I hope you will join us by donating some of your time, money, or talent to our cause...you’ll be happy you did.

“Cheers” to Coastline and the college’s many successes in the 2011-2012 academic year. We are already off to a good start for 2012-2013, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for this institution that I am so proud to be a part of.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Vaughn

Nearly 300 attend Newport Beach campus ribbon cutting

Evelyn Hart, member of the Measure C Citizen’s Oversight Committee, and Coastline President, Loretta P. Adrian, Ph.D.

Coastline Community College officially unveiled its Newport Beach Campus at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 3. Leaders from the college and the Coast Community College District—including elected Trustees and Chancellor Dr. Andrew C. Jones—were present along with Newport Beach Mayor, Nancy Gardner.

Mayor Gardner welcomed the new Coastline campus to the beachside community and explained to the crowd how the campus will serve as a landmark, revitalizing the upper northwest corner of Newport Beach.

After the formal ceremony, guests had the opportunity to tour the $48-million building—a three-story, green-construction masterpiece designed by LPA, Inc. and constructed by C.W. Driver with panoramic ocean views over Banning Ranch. The building has been built to Gold-LEED design specifications and includes a number of environmentally-friendly features. It has also been recognized with a 2012 award for excellence in design by the Orange County League of Conservation Voters.

“Coastline has long been known for their excellence in distance-learning and with this new, state-of-the-art green campus here in Newport Beach, we can serve those local students who prefer to learn in a traditional campus environment,” remarked Jim Moreno, President of the Coast Community College District Board of Trustees.

Located on nearly four acres, the Newport Beach campus will be home to general education courses that lead to a degree, certificate, or transfer-readiness; an Acquired Brain Injury Program; the college’s Paralegal Program; and the Coastline Art Gallery. At full capacity,

the campus can accommodate up to 900 students. The building construction was funded through Measure C, a $370 million voter-approved bond measure passed in 2002. Funds from Measure C have also enabled the construction and completion of many other projects on the campuses of Orange Coast College and Golden West College (also part of the Coast District), as well as at Coastline’s other sites.

Including the new Coastline Newport Beach campus, the college now boasts three main learning centers located throughout the Orange County area. The other campuses are located in Westminster and Garden Grove. This “distributed campus model” is what makes Coastline unique.

Coastline’s Newport Beach campus is located at 1515 Monrovia Avenue in Newport Beach and will open to students for spring semester classes in late January 2013.

President of the Coast Community College District Board of Trustees, Jim Moreno, cuts the ribbon to the new campus.

Nearly 300 guests, including Coastline Foundation Board Member Jeff Morin (center), toured the Coastline Newport Beach campus at the ribbon cutting ceremony held on October 3.

Naturally ventilated atrium one of many green features at new campus

Coastline’s newest campus is so eco-friendly, it was recently recognized by The Orange County League of Conservation Voters. Coastline won the 2012 Award for Environmental Excellence due to the college’s commitment to sustainable building practices, and you’ll find numerous sustainable features integrated into the Coastline Newport Beach campus, including:

• Campus construction did not disturb any agricultural land, wetlands or existing wildlife.

• Close proximity to public transportation provides students, faculty, staff, and visitors access to alternative transportation.

• Parking spaces are designated for low-emitting and fuel efficient vehicles, as well as carpools.

• Storm water management plan promotes capture, infiltration, and treatment of storm water runoff. 100% of the storm water will be captured and reused.

• Native and adaptive plants reduce irrigation needs by 50%. Irrigation zones use high-efficiency equipment and climate based controllers to minimize water usage.

• Low-flow plumbing fixtures and automated controls reduce the water usage by 30% in the building.

• The building will perform with 33% less energy than required by the state.

• Lighting and HVAC systems are designed to provide occupants control of their individual space reducing waster of lighting and HVAC energy.

• Naturally ventilated atrium (shown below) saves energy.

• 75% of the construction materials used for the project were recycled and diverted away from landfills.

• 20% of construction materials have high recycled content, reducing the impact on extraction and processing of virgin materials.

• 20% of construction materials were extracted, harvested and manufactured locally, within 500 miles from the project site.

• 50% of the new wood materials used in the project are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

• Low-emitting adhesives, sealants and paints will be used throughout the entire project, including pre-manufactured woods, carpets and rubber flooring products.
