surfing studies students were

recently involved in the

National University Surf

Challenge. The competition

was held in Cabarita and Uni-

versity Students from as far as

Sydney, drove up to take part

in this event.

A welcome BBQ was held at

Beachside Campus on Sunday

the 26th of June. The food

was provided by CoastR’s and

special thanks to Osca for

sponsorship.

The comp began on Mon 27th

June, on the beautiful Cabarita

Beach. The weather was fan-

tastic, and the water was

warm, unfortunately the swell

was a little small, but that

didn’t stop the keen surfers

who scooted through to the

next round. CoastR’s pro-

vided a free lunch for the

judges and contestants.

Tuesday was a better day for

surf, with an increase in swell

with a raging Southerly, and

by the end of the day, the

judges had decided on the

finalists.

The finals were held on

Wednesday the 29th June, and

the competition heated up.

The judges had tough deci-

sions to make as all contest-

ants were out to impress.

A special thanks to OSCA and

Surfing Australia– for making

this event possible and

CoastR’s– for providing sup-

port and catering. Thanks

also to our sponsors- Cabarita

Beach Surf Live Saving Club,

The Komune Resort, Triple X

Wetsuits, Earth and Sea Pizza,

the Aztec Mexican Coolan-

gatta, Coolangatta Hotel and

Red Bull.

SCU teams were successful in

the following medal placings.

Gold Medal– Ten Pin

Silver Medals– Woman’s

hockey & Lawn Bowls

Bronze Medals– Golf, ten-

nis, rugby 7’s, ten pin & men’s

volleyball.

Thanks to all of the contest-

ants for their best efforts and

recently held in Armidale

from the 3rd – 7th July 2011.

The games consisted of 13

individual and team sports and

a four night exclusive social

program.

SCU had 146 contestants who

travelled to Armidale to battle

the bitterly cold weather and

compete for medals in their

chosen sports.

CoastRs in conjunction with

OSCA (Office of Sport &

Cultural Activities) encourage

students and staff to repre-

sent SCU in various sporting

teams. At present we have an

SCU touch football team,

netball team, and soccer team.

This semester, we are starting

some new comps. For those

keen volleyball players, a cas-

ual comp will begin on Mon

18th July 2011.

National Uni Surf Comp

July - September 2011 Issue

On Tuesday the 5th July 2011,

Southern Cross University

Gold Coast Campus

celebrated Naidoc Day at

Beachside Campus. Around

150 locals attended the day

including special guests from

Gnibi, Palm Beach Currumbin

students and other guests

from Lismore.

The wonderful line up of

entertainment attracted the

crowds, with Indigenous band

the Stiff Gins displaying their

talents and holding a songwrit-

ing workshop afterwards, how

to sing songs in Indigenous

language. Local Indigenous band

GuriGuru, also displayed their

talents.

A free sausage sizzle running

from 11:00am-1:00pm, cooked

by the CoastR’s staff, and free

activities for the kids including a

jumping castle, face painting, hip

hop dancing demonstrations

and a fires starting demonstra-

tion led to a family fun day.

A special thanks to Virginia

Ingham, from Gnibi, for all of

her support, and also to the

Southern Cross University In-

digenous Events Committee.

A special thanks also the SCU

Library staff for unveiling the

wonderful artwork from the

art gallery Kallalu in Coolan-

gatta.

Thank you to all that were

involved in creating such a

fantastic celebration for 2011.

We look forward to Naidoc

Day 2012.

The day will consist of free

food and drink for all, live

entertainment, and social and

sports activities.

Activities will begin from

11:00am and extra shuttle

buses will run from each cam-

pus to accommodate trans-

port needs.

On the 7th July 2011,

CoastR’s, with the support of

Alumni, held a Cheese and

Wine Night at Beachside

Campus Gold Coast.

The night began at 6pm, and

despite the cold weather,

over 40 students attended.

Local talent Zoluka, enter-

tained the crowd, as well as

guest speakers from Alumni

Lana Nancarrow, and Gordon

Fraser (Alumnus of the year

2010).

Guests enjoyed complimen-

tary drinks and cheese plat-

ters.

CoastR’s Cheese and Wine

Nights are held each semester

as an opportunity for students

to get to know one another

and become familiar with

coastR’s and Alumni.

We look forward to hosting

the next one in 2012!!!

that happens every Saturday Night at 6pm.

Alive Live TV is recording special guests artists

live every week and then streaming it live onto

the net. This is a chance for local original art-

ists to perform their songs live and have it

recorded professionally for FREE.

Swell Tavern, staff are offering students at SCU
