Dear Parents and Caregivers,
INFORMATION NIGHT Thank you to all who attended our information evening last Wednesday 15th February and to those that were unable to attend and replied accordingly. I am sure the information from the staff was helpful and important in developing an understanding of what each teacher will expect from the students over the coming year. This ensures a positive start for the school year for all students. The time and effort the staff put into planning their sessions needs to be acknowledged and is an excellent example of their dedication and enthusiasm toward their teaching.
GOVERNING COUNCIL Thank you to the people who nominated to be on the Governing Council for 2017. It was pleasing to see that a number of parents chose to extend their commitment for another term. The Governing Council is always supportive of the school and the decisions that the staff make. It provides an opportunity for councillors to further understand the information behind our decision-making processes.
SRC Congratulations to our two Year 7 Leaders for this year in Megan Norman and Tyron Kassulke and to the students who have been elected by their peers to represent them on the SRC for 2017. I am sure that they will contribute successfully to any activities organised this year. I would like to acknowledge Vicki Johnson for her time and effort in coordinating the SRC.
MENTORING PROGRAM Our school mentoring began yesterday, with three mentors meeting their students for this year. We find mentoring to be a very valuable part of supporting and improving student self-confidence and assisting with their learning. Thanks to Marcia Gilgen, and Terry and Lorraine Marter for volunteering to mentor students again this year and to Monique Gillespie for coordinating the program.
HOME READING It was pleasing to see the large number of students who received their certificates to acknowledge the first milestone of 25 nights of home reading, particularly at this early stage of the term. The benefits of home reading and the flow-on effect of reading on student learning was outlined in the last newsletter. Parent support in encouraging students to complete their home reading is important and I would like to acknowledge parents who have made the effort to record and sign off on home reading in students’ books and diaries.
SCHOOL DROP-OFF
I would like to remind parents that students should be dropped off and picked up from the Dolan Street area of the school. A monitored crossing ensures that students are able to safely move from school. The Drogemuller Road area is not to be used due to safety concerns.
Regards,
Trevor Broughton, Principal

Play helps children develop a positive sense of self
Play provides opportunities for children to have power over
what they do, what and how they learn.
Young children depend on the sensitivity of the adults who
care for them. They often have little or no say about what
they do, when they do it and when they stop. Their lives
are often organised around an adult’s schedule. Children
are put in and out of high chairs and cars, they are fed and
go to bed when adults organise it, they go to preschools
and often even dress according to adults’ wishes and
preferences. Of course most adults are making decisions in
the interests of the child, but in the eyes of the child they
may feel quite powerless in many aspects of their everyday
lives.
Play is different. In play, children have more opportunity
to make decisions. This is important for their developing
sense of self as it builds feelings of self efficiency,
competence and confidence. Play enables children to
express feelings and practise roles. Through play, children
also learn to negotiate the give and take of relationships
with others.

Re: Last Swimming Lesson Thurs 2
nd March, 2017
On Thursday, 2nd March, students in Mrs Penno’s and Mr Hanna's class will have their last swimming lesson. As this will cover lifesaving skills we need students to bring a pair of old long pants and long sleeve t-shirt/top to wear over their bathers. We are also in need of many life jackets on this day if you are able to help bring any/some along (where possible). Thank you.
