Many homes in North America have inadequate attic ventilation systems, which can often be attributed to the lack of proper attic intake ventilation. Failing to properly install intake ventilation can render your attic ventilation system virtually useless.

Intake ventilation lets cool, fresh air into the system, while exhaust ventilation (typically a ridge vent) allows moist, warm air to exhaust from the attic. Unfortunately, proper intake ventilation is often overlooked by siding, gutter, or painting contractors who typically work in the soffit/undereave areas of your home. In addition, Cape Cod-style homes without soffits, soffits with clogged or painted-over vents, and vented roof deck systems are challenging to ventilate without expensive modifications.

A properly balanced attic ventilation system consisting of both Cobra® IntakePro™ Rooftop Intake Vent and exhaust vents will help:

• Promote your home’s energy efficiency by allowing cool, fresh air to enter your attic, driving moist, warm air out

• Add critical intake ventilation to homes with little or no soffits

• Boost the airflow of your attic ventilation system when used with existing soffit undereave vents

• Guard against ice damming in harsh winter climates

• Prevent premature roof system deterioration and limit the growth of harmful mold and mildew

Total Recommended Length Minimum Exhaust Attic Square of Cobra® IntakePro™ Ventilation (Net Free Footage Rooftop Intake Vent (Feet) Area in Sq. In.)

Balanced Ventilation RequirementsBalanced ventilation requires an equal amount of intake ventilation and exhaust ventilation. GAF recommends, at a minimum, providing 1 square foot of Net Free Ventilation for every 300 square feet of attic floor space. Consult local building codes for specific ventilation requirements in your area.

1. Calculate the total square footage of the attic floor area (round up to the next highest number). This number will determine the minimum total lineal feet of Cobra® IntakePro™ Rooftop Intake Vent that is needed.

2. Find the appropriate amount of Cobra® IntakePro™ Rooftop Intake Vent and minimum exhaust ventilation that corresponds to the total attic square footage.

Based on 1/300 Rule

Cobra® IntakePro™ Rooftop Intake Vent has 9 sq. inches per lineal foot (19,051 mm2/lm) of net free ventilating area.

NOTE: Always have a balanced ventilation system. In no case should the amount of exhaust ventilation exceed the amount of intake ventilation.
