If we provide a car lift up to the terrace floor, the terrace floor can be used for car parking by the owners of the commercial space until its future development. In addition vehicle access to all floors can be achieved and the space provided for ramp can be converted for commercial use which will add the revenue of owner.

1. INTRODUCTION
Kochi Smart City Mission is planning to construct a B+G+3 storied building for the proposed Market Developing Project at Market Road, Ernakulam. The work of geotechnical investigation for the proposed project was entrusted to M/s Engineers Diagnostic Centre (P) Ltd, Cochin. The field works for the geotechnical investigation were carried out from 22nd of September to 6th of October 2019 and boring was done up to a maximum depth of 55.00m.
The scope of work for this investigation included performing site reconnaissance, drilling and sampling of three boreholes, conducting geotechnical field and laboratory testing, and preparing this report. The primary purpose of these activities was to collect subsurface information at the site for subsequent preparation of geotechnical recommendations for the design of foundations for the proposed project.
The results of various tests conducted to determine the physical and engineering properties of soil samples collected from the bore holes are also appended in this report.
2. SCOPE OF WORK
Scope of work for the geotechnical investigations consists of:
a) Drilling bore hole at three locations at the site. b) Conducting standard penetration tests (SPT) in the bore holes at regular intervals and collection of samples. c) Conducting laboratory tests on samples collected for geotechnical properties of soil. d) Submitting a geotechnical report providing foundation design and recommendation for the proposed project.

3. FIELD EXPLORATION AND LABORATORY TESTING 3.1 FIELD EXPLORATION AND METHODOLOGY
Boring was done in accordance with the provisions of IS 1892-1979, using rotary calyx rig technique which is mechanically operated. Boreholes were drilled through the sandy and clayey layers and were terminated at 55.00m, 54.00m and 55.00m in areas of BH2, BH3 and BH4 respectively.
During drilling through the soil layers, sodium bentonite slurry was circulated in order to prevent the sides from caving. Standard penetration tests (SPT), were taken at various depth using standard split spoon sampler, the sets being driven by 63.5Kg hammer as per IS 2131-1981 giving a free fall of 750mm. The number of blows required to penetrate the first 15cm is for seating and is not considered for assessing strength characteristics. The summation of the number of second and third sets of 15cm each are termed as SPT value
bore holes. Soil samples were collected in plastic bags for visual inspection and classification of strata from all the layers as recorded in log sheets of bore holes.
3.2 ANALYSIS OF VARIOUS LABORATORY TESTS
Disturbed samples (SPT Samples) obtained from specified sampler were tested for the following index properties as well as strength properties to classify the strata to various soil group as per IS soil classification IS: 1498-1970 and IS: 2720.
3.2.1 Moisture Content {IS: 2720 (Part II) - 1973}
The natural moisture content of all the soil samples brought from the site was determined as prescribed in IS: 2720. For many soils, the water content will be an extremely important index used for establishing the relationship between the way a soil behaves and its properties. The consistency of a fine-grained soil largely depends on its water content. The water content is also used in expressing the phase relationships of air, water, and solids in a given volume of soil.

3.2.2 Grain Size Distribution {IS: 2720 (Part IV) - 1985}
Both sieve analysis and Hydrometer analysis were conducted on different samples and the findings are tabulated. Since particle diameters typically span many orders of magnitude for natural sediments, in order to conveniently describe wide ranging data sets, the base to logarithmic (phi) scale was used to represent grain size information for sediment distribution. A tabular classification of grain sizes in terms of units and other commonly used measurement scales is included for purposes of comparison.
3.2.3 Specific Gravity {IS: 2720 (Part III)- 1980}
The specific gravity of soil particles was determined by using pycnometer or density bottle. Specific gravity is the ratio of the mass of unit volume of soil at a stated temperature to the mass of the same volume of gas-free distilled water at the same stated temperature. The specific gravity of a soil is used in the phase relationship of air, water, and solids in a given volume of the soil.

5. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR FOUNDATION SYSTEM
Recommendations are based on the assumption that the soil profiles obtained in the boreholes taken are indicative of the entire area of the project. Any deviation in soil profile other than that observed in the boreholes tested should immediately be referred to the consultant and proper modification should be implemented.
From the study of the borehole, it was noted that the 0.50m to 0.70m comprise of fill. Shallow foundation if adopted in the top fill will undergo differential settlements due to non-homogeneous nature of the fill. Below this very soft silty clay was noted extending

up to depth of 4.50m in areas of BH2.In areas of BH3 and BH4, below the fill very loose to losse silty sand was noted extending up to a depth of 3.60 to 3.70m.
For the B+G+3 storied building, bored cast in situ D.M.C. piles with adequate penetration into dense to very dense sand strata at 42.00m depth in areas of BH2,BH3 and 50.00m in areas of BH4 may be provided. Suitable precaution has to be adopted in order to prevent the sides from caving while boring through loose sand layer.
Load test are essential for accurate determination of pile capacity.
Typical Calculations of safe bearing capacity of borehole BH3 are given below.
As per IS-2911, Part 1, Sec II, the ultimate load carrying capacity (Q u) for pile resting on granular soil is given by
Qu = + K Pdi tan As
Where
Ap = Cross Sectional area of pile toe m2
D = Pile diameter in m
= Effective unit weight of soil at pile toe kgf/cm3
Pd = Effective overburden pressure at pile toe in kgf/cm 2
= Bearing capacity factors based on angle of internal friction at pile toe
K = Coefficient of earth pressure
Pdi = Effective overburden pressure for the layer kgf/cm2
= Angle of wall friction between pile and soil
As = Surface Area of pile shaft, m2
The depth of pile is likely to be about 42.00m in the area of BH3. The load capacity of pile will be the summation of the friction developed from the very loose to loose sand/medium dense sand, soft clay/stiff/very stiff sandy clay strata and hard sandy clay strata.
Shear parameters and frictional capacity of pile in the area of BH3 is

Hence the safe capacity of pile based on soil strength criteria works out to be
Qsafe =((Rub + Ruf(1) + Ruf(2)+ Ruf(3)+ Ruf(4)+ Ruf(5) + Ruf(6)+ Ruf(7)+ Ruf(8)+ Ruf(9)+Ruf(10)+)/ 2.5)

The Uplift capacity of pile based on soil strength criteria works out to be
Qsafe = (Ruf(1) + (Ruf(2)+ Ruf(3)+ Ruf(4)+ Ruf(5) + Ruf(6)+Ruf(7)+Ruf(8) + Ruf(9)+Ruf(10)) / 3)

= 45.263Tonnes
0.6 x 0.6 x 42 x 1.5 = 17.803 Tonnes
Uplift capacity of pile = 45.263+17.803= 63.056, Say 60 Tonnes
Hence the safe uplift capacity of the pile of 600mm dia can be taken as 60 Tonnes.
CLIENT: IPE GLOBAL LTD

Capacity from Structural Strength Criteria:
Considering grade of Concrete to be used = M35
Permissible stress in direct compression = 9N/mm2
Considering concreting is to be done underwater, take only 75% of the capacities
Hence permissible stress in direct compression = 6.75N/mm 2
Qsafe of pile of 600mm dia from structural strength criteria
= (3.14/4) x 0.6 x 0.6 x 675 = 190.755Tonnes
Hence the safe carrying capacity of the pile in the very dense sand strata will be governed by the soil strength criteria and the safe capacity of 600mm dia pile can be taken as 125Tonnes. 6. SUMMARY & RECOMMENDATIONS:
Recommendations are based on the assumption that the soil profile found in the borehole tested is indicative of the surrounding plot area. Any deviation in soil profile other than that observed in the borehole tested in that area should immediately be referred to the consultant and proper modification should be implemented.
6.1 RECOMMENDATIONS
From the study of the borehole, it was noted that the 0.50m to 0.70m comprise of fill. Shallow foundation if adopted in the top fill will undergo differential settlements due to non-homogeneous nature of the fill. Below this very soft silty clay was noted extending up to depth of 4.50m in areas of BH2. In areas of BH3 and BH4, below the fill very loose to losse silty sand was noted extending up to a depth of 3.60 to 3.70m.

Load tests are essential for accurate determination of pile capacity
Safe vertical load carrying capacity of D.M.C. piles end bearing terminating in to very dense sand may roughly be assessed as
Pile Diameter (cm) Axial Capacity (Tonnes) Uplift Capacity (Tonnes)
50 80 45
60 125 60
70 180 80
80 250 95
For design consideration the horizontal load carrying capacity can be taken as 5% of
the axial capacity. Routine pile load tests shall be conducted on all piles for verification of pile
capacities recommended. The foundation execution is recommended under strict technical supervision.
