Back to School. Those dreaded three words that kids hated to hear as it meant that the holidays were drawing

to a close. So it is for most of us, the time with a return to work and New Year Resolutions to uphold.

A lot has happened over the December / January holiday period down at the Club with a major rework of the

parking and launching / retrieval arrangements at the ramps. This happened over the busy white crayfish run

in December and leading up to the busy Christmas holiday period. There were some obvious disruptions

during this period whilst line marking and changes in traffic flow were made. We do apologise for the

incontinence that this may have caused some members. Having been a participant in the Cray fish run I was

down at the ramps most mornings and thanks to members being considerate of the changes, I believe the

change over went relatively smoothly. Many thanks to Management and staff for keeping members up to date

on the changes and providing handouts on the new layout. Special thanks also to our Duty Officers under Roy

Richardson who were on hand during this time.

As always when you update or change anything others things come to light or happen. So it was with the

upgrade of the parking layout we had undertaken to upgrade our water supply main line to allow for the pen

extensions and to bring the supply line up to the new standards. The increased pressure that this provided

unfortunately caused a major leak developing in the old pipe work under the wash down bays before they

were due to be upgraded. This meant a loss of some of the bays at times as repairs were implemented and a

substantial water bill for the lost water. Again we were blessed in having our resident expert Rob Pomersbach

available, who together with Thor our boson, got stuck into repairing this fault. We owe Rob many thanks for

his time and equipment which he willingly provides free of charge to the Club.

In the next three months the Club will be hosting two major events. The first will be the Calamari Classic to

be held on Saturday the 10 March followed by the AAA Fishing Boat Championships on the 24 March or 25

March if due to weather conditions. Both events will be held from our Club premises and all our members are

eligible and invited to participate in these events. The Club will be open for Food and Beverages and enter-

tainment. Further details will be available from the events websites, the Club’s websites and Face book pages.

This year will see further improvements at the Club with the pen extensions commencing and the under croft

area redevelopment continuing.

The Management Committee trusts you the members will appreciate these improvement changes and will con-

tinue to utilize the facilities and bring your family and friends to the

activities that are organised.

The Management Committee and myself wish you a Happy New Year and a great 2018.

General Manager’s Notes

Whilst the Christmas/New Year period was busy, we did not encounter the parking pressures experienced the

previous year. Our new traffic flow and additional parking bays have been positively received by members.

The Club is hosting the Calamari Classic on 10 March and the AAAWA State Boat Fishing Championship on

24 March. Members can register for both events and we encourage members’ families and friends to join the

fun and festivities surrounding the presentations following each event.

New Club Sponsor

A huge welcome to our latest Silver Sponsor Uneeda Caravan Hire & Storage. Geoff Whittaker and his team

are looking forward to offering special discounts to our members. An overview of their operation will be

included in February’s newsletter.

Coffee Van on site

A huge thank you to Olwen’s “Travelling Bean” mobile coffee van for providing a great early morning coffee

service during the peak cray season. There is insufficient volume for Olwen to continue the arrangement

however Olwen has offered will attend special events at the Club.

Fuel Facility – On Site

Discussions are moving forward with a fuel distributor re providing an on-site fuel facility for members’ boat

fuel requirements. We expect a formal proposal later this month. Further details will be provided as this item

progresses.

New Pens

A contractor has been engaged following Management Committee’s approval of stages 1 and 1A of this

development with the new pens expected to be completed in April 2018. 12 metre pens in Stage 1 will

accommodate members who have agreed to partly fund the project by prepaying three or five years pen fees.

Stage 1A which is a new tie-up jetty located east of our main ramp jetties, will have the western side reserved

for CVSSR vessels and emergency vessels .We still have a limited number of pens available for allocation.

Please contact me if you have any queries or require further information on our pens.

Wash-Down Bays

Our water usage has increased substantially necessitating prompt action to reduce leaks and water waste. We

had budgeted to replace the water supply line to the wash-down bays and pens and upgrade the tap hardware

and attachments after the busy summer period to avoid disrupting members. This work has been brought

forward thanks to the voluntary effort by Rob Pomersbach and his digger which has saved the Club a

considerable amount of money. Thanks again Rob. Work will continue next week to complete the upgrade. The

water supply to the wash-down bays has been turned off from 7am to 7pm to avoid waste and will be available

on a 24/7 basis once the upgrade is completed later this month. Members are reminded that this is a 10 minute

maximum wash-down time per boat and please ensure all taps are turned off after use.

Ramp Access Plan

A copy of the new ramp access plan has been included again in this issue to ensure all members are familiar

with the changes.

Refurbishment of Ground Floor Restrooms

Waste water and a water supply have been installed for the new member amenity area and brick paving

replaced following the work. Our next stage is to build the new storeroom and vending machines area followed

by a new office entry and relocation of the entry door for the first floor foyer. We will apply for planning

approval to install a themed jetty landing as the main entry statement to the club. The balance of the work has

been broken into a series of projects to minimize inconvenience for members. New Bank Finance Facility

Commodore Des Kelly and I signed the necessary documentation for our new facility this week and we look

forward to the opportunities and flexibility the new facility will provide both now and in future years.

Rigs less than this size can only use XL bays when all other bays are full.

*When launching, please leave your boat as far as possible down the jetty to leave room

for other members launching after you whilst you are parking your trailer.

Didn’t know” (offered most commonly by those who have been Members for many years), closely followed by what appears to be a “don’t care” attitude, have become fairly common when we approach Members whose action or behavior is seen to be unsafe or clearly against the House Rules of the Club. Continuing the efforts of our volunteer Duty Officers, the following are some examples of common issues we have, and which disadvantage and endanger individuals and the general membership of our Club.

We need your understanding and support to make some necessary behavioral changes.

I saw that other car/trailer parked that way and even though I could see the big white traffic flow direction arrow, I thought it would be OK for me to park like that too.

I can’t reverse my trailer into this sort of parking bay so I came around against the traffic flow arrow so I could drive in.

Please check the traffic flow direction. Some, but not all parking bays are designed for

reverse entry only. We saw the fish cleaning station and came in when the gate was opened as we thought

anybody could use it. The Fish Cleaning Station is a Club facility paid for and to be used by Members only.

Access into our Club and the use of our facilities is not available to the general public.

Yes, I saw these parking bays were marked for extra long vehicles and trailers but they’re close to the ramps. I don’t like parking in the northern parking area as it’s too far for me to walk back to the ramps and it takes too long.

Some Members have larger boats and tow vehicles and need a bit of extra space.

Longer parking bays have been created and marked accordingly. Please note those larger bays and leave them for the larger rigs whenever possible to do so.

Yes, I could see the rubbish bin was full but my rubbish sat on top OK if I left the lid open.

No explanation needed for this one…..just plain laziness.

I thought it would be OK for my mate to park his car in the Club grounds because we were just going fishing for a few hours.

During our busy boating season, we all know that parking spaces can be filled to capacity.

Allowing your non member guests to park in the Club grounds may result in a paying Member having to park outside. Regardless of whether the Club is busy or not, please be

reminded that parking in the Club grounds is for Club Members only.

I left the Boat Storage compound entrance gate open so my mate could come in and unload his fishing gear….anyway, I’ll be going out in about 15 minutes.

Members pay to store their valuable equipment inside a secure area. There are locked

entrance and exit gates, only to be accessed by Members who have special keys. Please be reminded to lock the entrance gate as soon as you have entered the compound and only leave the area through the exit gate. Do not leave either gate open once you have passed

through.

Duty Officers and Orientation

I had been told driving the boat onto the trailer was not allowed but nothing was said about driving it off so I thought it was OK to do it. Launching or retrieving your boat under engine power is dangerous, unacceptable and not al-

lowed at any time.

I’ve been a Member for years and this is the first time I’ve heard you can’t refuel your boat from jerry cans whilst in the pens.

Re-fueling your boat anywhere in the Club grounds (especially the wet pens and jetty areas),

is not allowed.

No, I’m not a Member but my Dad is and he doesn’t always want to go out fishing so we use his gate key and membership card. We’ve been doing that for years.

If you are not a current financial Member, you do not have the right of access to the facilities of the Club. “B” Class membership is our provision where the parent, parent in-law, child or

child in-law (over 18 years of age) allows the use of their boat by other family members.

It’s easier for me to get into the boat when it’s in the carpark (rather than when it’s at the jetty).

Riding in or on your boat or trailer whilst it’s moving in the Club grounds is not allowed. I’ve got my membership card but did not receive any stickers for the car, boat or trailer.

Membership cards and Club stickers are mailed to Members in a single envelope.

The Club office records the date of that posting. Please affix the stickers provided to your vehicle, trailer and boat in accordance with the positioning instructions included. If you use a

second tow vehicle from time to time, affix the vehicle sticker to a suitable “moveable” backing piece (plastic, plywood, etc.) to enable its placement on the dashboard of the vehicle

used.

On a brighter note, we are very pleased with the positive reception and comments we receive after presenting our orientation session to all new Members. We include an overview of the Club history, the Management team, past achievements, future plans, familiarization of the grounds and facilities and, of course encouragement to learn, understand and comply with our House Rules. All existing Members are welcome to join any of the orientation sessions if you need a bit of a refresh-er on the topics we discuss. Please make contact with the office if you would like to attend.

Season’s Greetings to all, hope the New Year brings plenty of fishing opportunities. The crayfishing season has

produced some bumper results particularly for those in spots around Garden Island, the crays appear to have gone

to deeper territory now.

The crabbing season has been slow to start with some good reports coming from Paul Jansen filling his buckets in

the Peel estuary. It is shaping as a better season than the previous two years. Maybe some warmer weather in

January will assist with the growing season.

The Sports Fishing Group held a Squid Fishing day in December with some reasonable catches. Greg McFetridge

(Gmac) scored some good squid near Garden Island and supplemented his squid with some big KG’s

Christine Schwass (Time and Tide) showed us how it is done!

The Sport Fishing Group is holding its annual Crustacean Bake at the

Club on February 11. Everyone is welcome. We are planning to have a

crab hunt in the morning and bring them back to the Club for a crab

cook up and luncheon around 12.30pm. Anyone interested can either

join in the crab hunt (north of Woodman Point) or bring along a plate

to share (seafood related).

Next meeting is on Monday 12th February, 7.30pm at the Club. All welcome.

Hi cruisers,

I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year?

I spent some time over at Rotto having a relaxing time, so the group emails were a bit thin.

The Rockingham Australia Day weekend had been booked out, however we have had three cancelations. So if

you would like to join us send me an email, you will be in the exclusion zone for the fireworks and will need to

raft up until completed. Cost is $30 per night with a voucher of $15 to spend at the club bar.

The Pirate Raid at PFSYC is to be finalized soon, this is a club event not just the Cruising Group

All are welcome to attend. We will be having busses to ferry those from the club to PFSYC and

back. It should be a great event and lots of fun.

We have some more great trips and events planned, Australia Day at TCYC (Rockingham YC)

long weekend with fireworks, a Pirate Raid on the Perth Flying Squadron yacht club on the 17th

and 18th of February for the Pirate chest, and Mandurah long weekend 4th to 6th of March

So if you like what you have seen in the newsletter, then contact Cindy at the club to forward on your request to

join in the fun.

BOATING RULES and REGULATIONS

Our PM made news headlines last month for not wearing a PFD (lifejacket)

whilst boating alone on Sydney harbour.

The issue was seen from a Recreational Boating perspective in

social media, as ”Well here you have Australia’s chief law maker

being our own Prime Minister, not really understanding the boating

rules and regulations. And is there a blurred line in some areas of

regulation”.

Social Media especially in NSW, made the opportunity to suggest

that perhaps the wearing of PDF’s in mandatory situations such as

the event of Mr Turnbull isn’t appropriate. There was also equal

quarters given to the fact that NSW has had in recent months a spat

of boating incidents and deaths. These occurred both in PFD uses

and non-PFD’s.

Mr Turnbull has been duly fined $250 by NSW Waterways for breach of their regulations.

It is important to understand that each state has its own distinctive set of boating rules and that a number of media

commentators, that were broadcasting this event, didn’t quite appreciate that it is a state by state issue, if Malcolm

Turnbull had repeated the same incident in the Swan River, it would be no offence.

Of course, the issue is timely, as WA’s Department of Transport (DoT) is in the middle of our own state Safety

Review.

As you’re aware, CPBA placed a submission back in June 2017 to Phase 1 of that review process.

We anticipate that DoT will be releasing a paper in the coming months with the outcome of Phase 1, and entering

Phase 2. Once we receive notification, we will again be seeking feedback from our membership.
