What's inside Change to Libretto
As you are probably aware, the international ABRSM magazine Libretto has up
until now been issued three times a year. It is produced by the London offi ce and is accompanied by our very own New Zealand newsletter Coda. From 2014 Libretto will become a twice-yearly publication – in March and September – with
additional content being made available online at www.abrsm.org/libretto.
You will be pleased to note that CODA will continue to be published three times a year by the New Zealand offi ce – a January edition to accompany your 2014 stationery, and then with the March and September Libretto issues.
ABRSM Grant to Schools for 2014
Once again this year it was very diffi cult to choose the recipient of the ABRSM Grant
to Schools.
In the end we are delighted to announce that the grant for 2014 goes to Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Nga Mokopuna in Wellington. The school’s music teacher, Chris Petrie, thanks ABRSM for its support and says the money will be used to purchase fi ve keyboards to use in the classroom music programme.
KBB has come to the party again this year, and are contributing a sixth keyboard and six sets of headphones, so Chris can enjoy some peace and quiet while the students work! We are extremely grateful to KBB for their continued generosity in stretching the ABRSM Grant a bit further for the benefi t of the recipient school.

Revised ABRSM Marking Criteria
2014 Syllabus Guide
When a new syllabus becomes current, for example with Woodwind in 2014, pieces
may still be chosen from the previous year provided all three pieces are selected from one syllabus. This allowance is valid for the fi rst full year of a new syllabus. The requirements of the supporting tests (scales, sight reading, and aural tests) should always be taken from the latest syllabus. The syllabuses valid for 2014 are are shown here.

Bowed Strings 2012-2015
Woodwind 2010-2013 2014-2017
Brass 2013-2016
Singing 2011 onwards
Guitar, Harp, and others 2011-2014
The Grade 1 Odyssey Continues… the latest addition to her wall of certifi cates – as of December 2013 – is a distinction for Grade 1 oboe! Heather is not the only one pushing herself outside her comfort zone as her oboe teacher, Alison Jepson, kindly agreed to accompany her in the exam – a fi rst for Alison too. Rumour has it that Heather’s next instrument might be the harp, so watch this space!
Last year in Coda we reported on our very own Heather Gummer’s intrepid journey
through various Grade 1 exams on a series of different instruments in order to put herself fi rmly in the shoes of candidates throughout the country. Since 2011 Heather has sat (and passed with fl ying colours!) Grade 1 exams on viola, trombone and French horn, and
As mentioned in the 2013:3 edition of Libretto, ABRSM has published a set of revised
marking criteria for instrumental and singing exams, to be used worldwide from January 2014. These are not new criteria, but rather a new way of presenting the criteria that examiners have been using for many years. The exam experience for candidates will not be affected in any way.
Says ABRSM’s chief examiner John Holmes: “We have taken a long look at the current criteria to see how we can refresh and improve them. We have retained what works well and have made changes only where there was an opportunity to bring greater clarity and consistency. This will change nothing in terms of how we assess candidates, and our marking standards will not change.”
In each element of the exam, ABRSM continues to operate the principle of marking from the required pass mark positively or negatively, rather than awarding marks by deduction from the maximum or addition from zero. Here are some examples of the revised criteria in specifi c parts of the exam:
Scales and Arpeggios To gain a distinction (19-21 marks), examiners will be looking for the following:• Highly accurate notes/ pitch• Fluent and rhythmic• Musically shaped• Confi dent responsePreviously the marking criteria were worded thus:• Quick response• Fluent and musically prepared• Confi dent and even tempo
Aural testsFor a merit (15-16 marks), the marking criteria will be as follows:• Strengths signifi cantly outweigh
weaknesses• Musically aware• Secure responseThis has changed from:• Good response• Minor errors or hesitation
PiecesFor all Grades (1-8), the marking criteria will be broken down into fi ve specifi c assessment areas, which are Pitch, Time, Tone, Shape and Performance.
The refreshed marking criteria will appear in all new syllabus booklets, starting with Woodwind syllabus this year, and are available online at www.abrsm.org/markingcriteria.

National IRMT Conference 2014 February 7th – 9th in New PlymouthAs previously announced, ABRSM is proud to support the next conference of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers NZ which promises to be a wonderful event. You don’t need to be a member of the IRMT to attend, and there are fl exible options to go to particular sessions or days, or to the whole conference. Information and contact details can be found at www.irmt.org.nz.
One of the not-to-missed sessions at the conference will be presented by Heather Gummer, National Co-ordinator for ABRSM. The session will refer to the increasing use and usefulness of technology in the world of music teaching and is entitled: Smarten Up –
demystifying the use of smartphones, the
internet, and other technologies, within and
beyond the music studio. This session will be a beginner-friendly introduction to
using technology to complement your teaching resources, and
to enrich student learning between lessons. This will be a jargon-free zone, and the focus will be on products that are very
simple to use and freely or cheaply available. There
will be clear step by step demonstrations, and handouts will
be provided covering all the content from the session. Time will be reserved at the end for attendees to share their technology tips and tricks with colleagues.
