What is driving Code Exchange?

A huge amount of innovation related to the use and enhancement of SAP solutions actually occurs outside of SAP. Developers are creating add-ons addressing their particular requirements.

Many of these innovations are very specific. As a result, SAP would not plan to cover them in standardproducts. However, multiple customers may be able to gain a benefit from inspecting, adapting and usingsuch innovations.

This is where code exchange comes into play, to foster and capture co-innovation and co-developmentbetween SAP and the SAP developer community as part of the SAP community network.

What is Code Exchange?

The code exchange area on SDN allows community members to share and collaboratively developprototypes. It is aimed at individual developers who want to showcase ideas they have developed, solicitfeedback from the SAP developer community at large or find other developers who may want to join their project.

The platform supports code and release management, supports online discussions and blogs, document

management and issue tracking.

Code exchange does not compete with general-purpose code exchange platforms but rather aims to providethe best experience for SAP developers. This means seamless integration into the SAP Community Networkand best integration with SAP technology platforms such as SAP NetWeaver ABAP and SAP NetWeaver Composition Environment.

Therefore SAP has formed an extended product team with members of the developer community, particularly the SAP Mentors and code exchange pilot users. This team identifies and prioritizes therequirements and feature set for future code exchange enhancements.

What’s the technology behind Code Exchange?

Code Exchange is completely integrated into the SAP Community Network and build on top of SAP’scollaboration workspace using the SBS software from Jive.

To cover all use cases of Code Exchange there are some plugins connecting to a code managementsystem. This code management system currently uses a subversion code repository to store the codesubmitted by the Code Exchange users.

Regular users will mostly access the collaboration platform itself through SCN (with SSO) and browse

through the projects. Users can also access all the code directly via a subversion client. Depending on their rights users can either just consume code from or submit code to the code repository.

How can you participate on Code Exchange?

As a pre-requisite users need to be member of the SAP Community Network (SCN). SCN members are ableto use an SAP NetWeaver Developer License for developing and sharing add-ons. This developer license, targeted at individual developers only, can be downloaded from the SDN download catalog free-of-charge.

Before being able to access any assets on Code Exchange SCN users need to accept the Code Exchangeterms of use (description on how to join).

SAP will then grant access to the system and from that point on the user can access ALL assets (e.g., code, releases, issues, discussions) of EVERY project. Additionally the user can create projects on CodeExchange without any additional approval process through SAP.

SAP employees can participate on Code Exchange without signing the TOU. They need to follow theguidelines for SAP contributions to Code Exchange, available through the employee network within the

“Code Exchange” community.
