Memory’s CODE• Connect
• Organize
• Dual-Code
• Exercise and Elaborate
The Strategic Teacher by Silver, Strong, Perinie, 2007
CONNECTIONS
Hook that helps students connect their experience and background to the lecture topic
THE HOOK
Apply past knowledge to new situations is defined by Art Costa and Bena Kallick as a critical habit of mind (2008, 2009)
•The hook is the bait so that you can reel in your students’ minds
•Mastery hook – recall or repeat information
•Understanding hook – focusing on controversy
•Self-expression – imaginations, what if?
•Interpersonal hook – personal connection
KINDLING
• Give students time to stop and think
• Allowing students time to jot down their initial ideas on paper
• Encouraging students to share their ideas
ORGANIZATION
Present information in manageable chunks which students record on visual organizers
VISUAL ORGANIZERS
• Structure the chunks of information that students will be expected to collect during the lecture
• Ask students to listen then say “stop the video and record what you hear, re-wind if you need to”
• Visual organizers create expectations about learning and about how new information will be experienced
• Developing anticipation that holds student attention
DEEPER PROCESSING
Lecturer uses a variety of techniques such as visual and physical aids, demonstrations, vivid imagery, processing activities, to make the content more memorable
DUAL-CODED
• Stored in multiple parts of each student’s memory
• This happens when students get an opportunity to process content in a variety of ways and senses
Involve the Senses• The more senses involved the deeper the
engagement
• Descriptive text, add the details so they can visualize
• Use images, visual aids or physical aids that students can touch and feel
• Vary tone and level of emotion
Exercise
Memories are like muscles, they develop with exercise.
Stop and Question• Exercise and apply what they have learned
• Stop and question:
• 1 – 3 minutes for primary students
• 3 - 5 minutes for upper elementary
• 5 – 7 minutes for upper middle school and high school students
Question Types
Synthesis
• Culminating task
• Remind students to revisit lecture notes and organizers – use them as a study guide
