What is the CogAT?Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)

ÄConsitsts of 3 abilities testsÄVerbal (V)ÄQuantitative (Q)ÄNon-Verbal (N)

ÄComposite scores are calculated from these tests and used to help determine placement.

ÄScores are percentiles (factoring in grade & monthly age)

How will placement be determined?

Student ReviewÄEvery student is reviewed by the placement

committee. Ä We consider:

Ä CogAT scoresÄ MAP scoresÄ Quarterly grades for relevant subject areasÄ Classroom performance: conversations, questioning, connectionsÄ Work samplesÄ CEU participationÄ Motivation & task commitment

If my child did not meet the eligibility requirements, but I believe he would be

successful in the program, what should I do?Request a Placement Review…

• Placement Review Process– Parent/Guardian requests a Placement Review by the date

identified in the notification letter. (Parent/Guardian requests must be in the form of a letter requesting placement in the GT Math class, and must cite reasons/examples with documentation that would support the child’s probable success within this class. Letter is sent to the GT Resource Teacher.)

– Collection of additional Placement Review Data by staff– Placement Review Committee Meeting including G/T staff,

administration, and classroom teachers– Parent notification of committee recommendation will be

mailed during the week of March 29th.

What’s included in my mailing?

– Student Score Report (Keep for your records)• Specific information about how your child scored in each test

battery as compared to Howard County and National Norms• Student Profile description and additional information on scores.

– Placement Letter (Return to teacher if applicable)

– Grade 6 GT Course Placement Review Form• Things to think about:

– Thoughtful placement process prior to mailing– Responsibility for “skipped” curriculum lies with the family– GT courses standards will remain the same– Potential lack of movement possibilities if your child isn’t successful

What if my child is eligible for multiple GT classes but I don’t want

them to take all of them?

ÄYou and your child should select the courses that best match your child’s interests for the 6th

grade year. ÄYou may elect to place your child into the

remaining GT courses in the 7th grade year. (Please note, this option is only available for the courses that he/she Tested into with an eligible CogAT score. School placements do not carry over from year to year; however, you may request a placement review from the 6th grade teachers.)
