Cooperative Learning
• Builds teamwork• Relationships are strengthened• Higher level thinking skills• Inquiry based questioning• BRAIN FRIENDLY ACTIVTIES!!!
Brush up on past experiences
• Students would read the overview of cooperative learning to begin the class
• Review what other examples they have used in the past
• What skills are being utilized?• Why is this skill important?
Bridge to the Future
• Inquiry based questioning– Where would cooperative learning be used in the
future?– How will this relate to everyday life?– What will the outcomes be of this lesson?
PA State Standard
• State Standard: 10.4.12.F. – Assess and use strategies for enhancing adult group interaction in physical activities; shared responsibility, open communication, goal setting.
Lesson Objective
• Goal/ Objective:The students will be able to complete
the assigned group tasks by effectively working in a team setting, cooperating with others, using positive forms of communication (high fives, put ups, encouraging words and phrases), and by following the rules set out for the activity.
Activities
• Carpet Maze• Link the dots• Treasure Island
CARPET MAZE
After allowing five minutes for planning, the group must discover the hidden patter within the maze without verbal communication. Only one player can touch the maze at a time and students must follow the specific “turn” order (numbered 3x5 cards) at all times. A buzzing noise by the teacher indicates an incorrect square (use a vocal buzz if you don’t have an electric buzzer). When buzzed, the student must exit the maze the EXACT same way as they entered or they will be buzzed again. The next person in order enters the maze.
Link the DOTS• Directions: With a group of five students, link the 9 dots on the floor with
4 straight lines (or the harder task of 16 dots with six lines, can cross 2 dots twice) . Use the rope to connect, you may cross the line to solve the puzzle. No talking is allowed on the first attempt- you must find a different way to communicate with your team
• 9 dots 16 dots
Summary Questions
• By using summary questions, I can relate the task to real life experiences
• Wrap-up after the activity allows for processing time, and retention of the topic
• Transition from one to another
