COIL is Performance Space 122’s annual performance festival demonstrating the constant vitality of live performance in New York City, featuring work created locally, from across the US and around the world.

As PS122 prepares to return to our home at 150 First Ave - this year we focus on transformation. We see ever an increasing blur between artforms, identities, and entirely new ways of creating live performance. Technology plays a part  - but there is far more than that going on. We interact, we participate, we see audiences creating the work itself.

COIL itself - now in its 10th iteration - is a prime example of transformation. Originally created as a showcase of pre-existing dance for an audience of national/international curators and presenters - it has evolved. While still a touring and career springboard for our artists it is now an essential event for the denizens of NYC, highlighting envelope-pushing dance, theater, music, performance, media and indeed virtual art.

We are delighted to present to you COIL 2015. Come often, dive all the way in and make it your own.

RUDE WORLD

Rude World is co-commissioned and co-presented with The Chocolate Factory Theater with support from the Jerome Foundation. Residency support provided by Baryshnikov Arts Center and through PS122’s inaugural RAMP Residency with support from a 50th Anniversary Grant from the Jerome Foundation. Additional presentation support provided by Mertz Gilmore Foundation, Harkness Foundation for Dance and Jerome Robbins Foundation.

Molly Lieber and Eleanor Smith make dances together by constructing improvisational practices into a mutual experience of performance. Seemingly conjoined at times, or forcefully in opposition - this performance is a living, breathing, thumping manifestation of a profound and raw artistic collaboration.  As highly skilled improvisers, they often discover ideas first through feeling. Their artistic intimacy allows for a crafted wildness which is then honed into a performative specificity through the necessity of a dual consensus. Rude World is the final series in a triptych of works created over the course of three years.

“These women are tied together. One would carry the other across a desert, it seems, if they didn’t kill each other first.”

THANK YOU FOR COMING: ATTENDANCE

Faye Driscoll’s Thank You For Coming series envisions a society in which performance is a collective, political and participatory act. In the premiere iteration of the series, Attendance, performers pass through ever-morphing states of physical entanglement and scenes of distorted familiarity, building new bodies, new stories, and new ways of being around a constantly constructed and re-imagined group experience. Intimately staged in the round, Driscoll crafts a heightened reality of observation, invitation and interdependence. As audience and performers increasingly find themselves becoming one, a beautiful and chaotic shared identity emerges, culminating in a dynamic ritual of action and transformation.

“Ms. Driscoll is fascinating in that she makes such utterly original work. It doesn’t look like anything you’ve ever seen before, nor  can you imagine thinking it up.”

BeginAgain questions the multiplicity of self, memory and perspective through two parallel solos weaving in and out of each other. Juniper Shuey’s futuristic design explores new technological methods juxtaposed against Zoe Scofield’s intense, primal choreography, triggering a raw tableaux of movement and stage composition. BeginAgain reveals an intrinsic truth about oneself and the aspects of humanity that unite us all.

Seattle dance wunderkinds, zoe | juniper, have been seen throughout the US and internationally. With BeginAgain their work moves into a darker and more profound experience than anything seen to date.

“The blending of their talents has produced some of the most impressive dance/visual spectacles to come out of Seattle in recent years.”

Swiss choreographer Alexandra Bachzetsis has been exploring the various provinces and domains of ‘mainstream’ popular culture – hip-hop, fashion, strip- tease, movies – and extracted the signature vignettes and ensemble pieces from it that have come to define her choreographic, performative practice.

Inspired by Diego Velázquez’s seminal rendition of Venus at her Mirror (1599-1600), From A to B via C opens with three bodies moving from and towards each other, acting as each other’s mirror image - mediated and unsynchronized. Complex scenes of nudity, gazing and instructional scores reflect on our common desire to communicate our own identity through the identities of others.

“In her new work, the Swiss choreographer turns the stage into a training and instruction room … where the levels shift as constantly as the linguistic forms.”

dataPurge has been commissioned by PS122 with an exploration grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation for the Building Demand for the Performing Arts Program.

dataPurge is the first live exploration of PS122’s Virtual Program which investigates how we create live performance digitally, interactively and beyond the stage.

Clients will undergo data dialysis by monitoring the emotions associated with their online identities using body sensors and brain wave monitors during a live-streamed event. Online viewers can influence client outcomes through an interactive platform - a dataPurge version of group therapy. Upon completion, each client leaves with their soul awakened and ready to re-enter the digital world again with a clean slate.

Online viewing and participation for 24 hours begins 11am on January 15th at http://datapurge.me

A continuous yawn is projected repeatedly in Times Square. Advertising screens fill with an omnipresent head looking down from the skies, yawning amongst the commercial vibrancy. A contagion of yawns begins, defiantly resisting the epicenter of New York’s constant sensory overload. After some time, the masses disperse, unconsciously continuing to carry with them the infectious message.

At midnight each night, join us in spreading an epidemic of yawns throughout the city, finishing each day of the Festival with a moment of communal respite.

On the very last night of COIL , Saturday January 17th at 11:45pm, meet us in Duffy Square (Broadway and 46th) for a gathering with the artist. Stay Awake!

“Sebastian Errazuriz is half merry prankster, half brooding death-poet. But he’s all artist and all designer.”

MY VOICE HAS AN ECHO IN IT was commissioned by Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY with composer commissioning award and additional support from the New York State Council on the Arts’ with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and additional support, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Residency support provided by The Watermill Center and Ideal Glass Gallery.

MY VOICE HAS AN ECHO IN IT   is a six- hour durational performance of live music, spoken text and video set within a freestanding, soundproof installation that is 24 feet long by 6 feet wide. While viewing the performers through two-way mirrors, audience members listen to music ranging from drifty ambient sounds to erasure poetry to raucous punk-inspired anthems through headphones along the outside perimeter of the installation. Temporary Distortion creates a complex and densely layered yet intimate experience where everyone has a front row seat.

Viewers are encouraged to come and go throughout the six-hour duration of the event. Capacity is limited and reservations are recommended.

“Temporary Distortion just keeps elevating their game. You could call that game sculptural video, or perhaps living set design, or maybe just multimedia ravishment.”

Jan 12 at 4pm: Open Space is a collaborative conference that offers the power to the participants. A process for supporting people to self-organize and collaborate around any question with opportunities for group discussions on topics proposed and curated by the attendees themselves. Participants are free to move between discussions, debating or spectating as they choose. Open Space is a constructive and inclusive platform which was pioneered by UK-based Improbable theatre company.

Jan 17 at 3pm: Conversation/Mixer is a two-part event, opening with 20 Questions for a Good Conversation, a curated question and answer session conducted between a small panel and an audience. 20 Questions was created by the founders of Forest Fringe. Provocations to panelists and audiences range from the concrete to the abstract. The evening culminates with a good old-fashioned mixer with music and wine, fueled by new ideas, new friends and renewed energy.

SPAN 2015 is curated by Lucy Jackson.

SPAN is a discussion series based around theory and practice, the role of criticism and collaborative relationship forming within the ecosystem of the New York City performance industry. The two events of SPAN 2015 will be an Open Space and a Conversation/Mixer.

Mike Iveson makes his debut as a playwright with SORRY ROBOT, a satirical, sentimental, song-studded spaz opera. Four performers and a piano create a haunting, near future world where robots long to feel the same things that their embarrassing, and sort of pathetic human masters feel, at a hotel that doubles as a software development facility in the dystopian state of Florida.

Beloved downtown performer and 2013 Ethyl Eichelberger Award winner, Iveson leads the charge with nine original perverse pop songs which provide a window into the hidden hankerings of robots and humans alike - and which just may convert every human in the room into a metallic automaton.

No robots were harmed in the making of this piece.

“At the center of it all is Mike Iveson, whose Herculean performance … is a work of effortless charisma.”

A conjuror of futuristic shamanism, Andrew Schneider’s YOUARENOWHERE experiments with the virtues of sensory overload via quantum mechanics, parallel universes, and Craigslist’s “Missed Connections”. Battling glitchy transmissions, crackling microphones and lighting instruments falling from the sky, one guy on a mission and a tricked-out interactive new-media landscape merge to transform physical space, warp linear time and short-circuit preconceived notions of what it means to be here now.

Schneider’s work critically investigates our over-dependence on perpetual connectedness. He creates solo performances, large-scale dance, builds interactive electronic art, and was a Wooster Group company member (video/performer) from 2007-14.

“a frenetic, witty, disorienting explosion of linear time”

RIDE ON THEATRE (AUSTRALIA)

THE BLIND DATE PROJECT

The Blind Date Project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body and Australian Consulate-General New York.

NY Premiere | Theater Co-presented with Parkside Lounge

Unpredictable, dark and funny, The Blind Date Project is an event to which everyone can relate – a blind date between two people who have never met and who are desperately in need of connection.

Australian Film Institute award-winner Bojana Novakovic plays Anna – a woman waiting at a karaoke bar for her date to arrive. That date is a different performer every night. She has no idea who she is about to meet or what is about to happen. Devoid of scripts or rehearsals, this is an entirely improvised, intensely personal interaction – including karaoke numbers – in front of a crowd of willing participants.

Guided live via text messages and phone calls by the director, and interspersed with random songs, each date promises to be as bizarre as it is dangerous. No two shows are ever the same. Things may turn out to be humiliating, tender or totally hot.

45849_r1.indd 18 12/1/14 9:34 AM

Page 19: COIL 15 Brochure

On a hallucinatory road trip from the Badlands to Graceland, the spirits of Elvis Presley and Theodore Roosevelt battle over the soul of Ann, a painfully shy meat-processing plant worker, and what kind of man or woman Ann should become. Set against the boundless blue skies of the Great Plains and endless American highway,  RoosevElvis is a new work about gender, appetite, and the multitudes we contain.

An intimate, raw and characteristically magical work from PS122 stalwarts, returning briefly to NYC after a much heralded 2013 run.

“The TEAM’s most intimate work and also its warmest…a spirited and insightful commentary on two archetypes of American masculinity.” —The New York Times

In our fractured times, it is more important than ever that artists and audiences are brought together to share their work and ideas.

Performance Space 122, Asia Society, and the China Shanghai International Arts Festival (CSIAF) have begun an unprecedented institutional collaboration with these ideals in mind. Sam Wu, Qin Yi and Zulan come together in a music focused, multidisciplinary evening. These three emerging artists are articulating new forms – locally sourced but distinct in their engagement with the larger, international audience.

Please join us after the 5PM performance for a dialogue with the artists.
