LOUIS LEDOUX, NEW MANAGING DIRECTOR OF COLAS SOUTH AFRICAFrench by birth, I left France in 2001. The last year of my master’s degree in engineering was spent as an exchange student in Budapest, Hungary, where I became acquainted with Colas through an internship focusing on market analysis.

In 2003, Colas offered me my fi rst job, which was on a 40km motorway construction site in Romania. Transferred to Poland 2 years later, I took charge of the private clients portfolio, with the activity being concentrated on the construction of large malls and shopping centres.

Thereafter I was transferred to the UK in 2006, and was based in Portsmouth, where Colas secured a Private Finance Initiative contract transferring the management of 450km of road to Colas for refurbishment and maintenance for 25 years. I was tasked with the delivery of the refurbishment programme, and then took charge of the business unit.

In 2012 Colas partnered with Dust-A-Side (DAS), a company based in South Africa, specialising in dust control and haulroad management in the mining sector. Glad to get closer to the sun, I welcomed the opportunity to join the DAS team and manage their African operations. This was exhilarating, with the development of two new subsidiaries in Mozambique and Morocco.

I have now rejoined the mother ship at a particularly exciting time for the company, expanding into contracting activities. I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone for their warm welcome to the company, and look forward to working with the team to make a success of this new journey together.

A VIBRANT 2015 FOR COLAS EAST AFRICAFIRST PMB USED AT A MAJOR HIGHWAY

In 2013 CEA began an initiative to introduce PMB in Kenya for adoption into their design manual.The Colas technical team engaged with the KeNHA (Kenya National Highways Authority), Materials Department and China Road and Bridge Construction. Our product was approved for use at the Southern Bypass Highway and successful application on the Mombasa Nairobi Highway intersection at Emali. CRBC has been impressed with the turnaround time of application and opening of the road to traffi c, and this has been a value addition compared to conventional bitumen. Considering their experience in the southern bypass project, they proposed to use Colfl ex at this new site. We look forward to the acceptance of PMB in Kenya’s design guides.

FIRST PMB USED AT JOMO KENYATTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT RUNWAY PROJECT

Colas East Africa (CEA) had, since March 2015, supplied a total of 1 500 metric ton litres of a special blend of Colfl ex-A to Sinohydro Corporation, contracted to rehabilitate the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi. CEA gained good experience in management of this supply contract, having initially faced challenges in balancing the client’s hot mix asphalt night schedules and material delivery, but the team successfully overcame this through excellent coordination and teamwork. Sinohydro Corporation expressed their interest to work with Colas East Africa on Phase 2 of the project as soon as the contract is signed. This is due to their professional capacity to handle a project of this magnitude using a new technology in the region.

AEA VELOCITY

Potholes are a menace on the roads of Kenya. Colas East Africa has successfully manufactured Velocity 300 emulsion for AEA, a franchise of Velocity. Thanks to Millicent, our lab technicians dedicated time to ensure that the emulsion was manufactured and delivered to the expectation and satisfaction of the client.

Trials and demonstrations have been successful in Nairobi, Kiambu, Mombasa, Olkaria, Nakuru and, most recently, Kisumu. AEA and Velocity thanked Colas on national television for the support extended to them and, once again, we are proud to lead the road forward.

CONSTRUCTION OF AN INTER-ARMY SURGICAL AND MEDICAL CENTRE The construction of an inter-army surgical and medical centre was assigned to the Colas Djibouti team at the end of 2014 by the French Forces located at Air Base 188 in Djibouti.3 100m3 of concrete produced by our batch plant and 100 tons of rebar have been used during the structural works. Throughout the construction period there have been no accidents experienced by Colas Djibouti and their subcontractors. The hospital offers the following services: emergency reception, surgical units, medical imaging department and specialist consultation offi ces. This single storey facility of about 3 730m² will be inaugurated on 31 May by the 3-star General of the French Force located at Djibouti. The centre will be opened next summer, succeeding the current Bouffard Hospital, which will be handed over to the Djibouti Government. The project, including structural and technical works plus fi nishing, has amounted to almost 10 Million Euro.

The client has expressed satisfaction with the construction process and completion of the project.

NAMIBIA

Colas Mozambique has secured a 10 000 ton bitumen supply contract to the Chinese construction company, AFECC (Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Corporation). The project is funded and managed by China State Engineering and Construction (CSEC). Awarded in September 2015, the project will be completed in 2018, with a possibility of supplying a further 20 000 tons of bitumen, which will provide 287km of hot mix asphalt surface treatment to a tolled highway linking Beira city and Machipanda at the Zimbabwean border.

Colas is supplying the product in bitutainers, which are transported from Durban to Beira by sea and transported by road over 200km to two hot mix asphalt plants producing 240 tons of asphalt per hour. Colas has also supplied various emulsions to the project, including Colprime E, CRS 65 and Coltack L.

ONDANGWA AIRPORT ASPHALT RUNWAY REHABILITATIONThe project involved the total refurbishment of the Ondangwa Airport landing strips and runways, as well as the roads serving the terminal building. The parties involved were the client, namely NAC: Namibia Airports Company, and the main contractor, China State Construction

Engineering Corporation, together with subcontractors Colas Namibia, who were responsible for the asphalt base and asphalt surfacing,

while Interoute supplied the markings, and ADB Airfi eld Solutions were responsible for the electricity and lights. The scope of the project

amounted to 3 000k€, for paved asphalt quantities totalling an asphalt base of 16 000 ton and asphalt surfacing of 16 000 ton. The

duration of the work covered 60 paving days, split over 2 separate phases to keep the airport operational during the construction phase.

The labour force included locals and expatriates, which enabled

signifi cant skills transfer and training of the local people to be

employed for future projects. The success of the project is a

tribute to the exemplary coordination in the resources sharing

between Colas group subsidiaries and stakeholders including

Colas Bitumen Branch, as well as Colas Namibia, Ivory Coast,

Mauritius, Mayotte, Madagascar and the Congo.

Challenges included the remote location, weather diffi culties,

and the fact that the project entailed an entirely new type of

work for Colas Namibia. Additional obstacles that had to be

overcome included the necessity to ensure that the normal daily

routine and traffi c fl ow of the airport was not inhibited in any way.

The completion of the middle section of the project was particularly

daunting, as this had to be completed on a tight schedule.

The project was completed on 09 April 2015.

The successful completion of this major project provides Colas

with the opportunity to quote on additional work, such as the

second phase of the project, namely the apron and taxiways, as

well as being considered for other airport schemes in Namibia in

the future. NAC and CSCEC were very satisfi ed with the work

done by our teams regarding the quality and the effi ciency on

site, and have expressed interest in working with Colas on other

asphalt projects in Namibia.

ZAMBIA

Colas has diversifi ed in line with the Colas motto ‘the road forward’.A contract was awarded to an international roads contractor.

The Sabina to Mufulira project included a full reconstruction of

the road base, with a 40mm asphalt overlay. The Sabine turn-off

to Mufulira is a 28km stretch, which was completed before the

rainy season. Thereafter, once the rainy season had ended, the

surface started to break up.

Colas Zambia had supplied the 50/70 grade bitumen for the

contract. The contractor approached Colas to help resolve

the problem. The fi rst step was to determine the correct traffi c

count. The next step was to send sample products to the Colas

France laboratory for a detailed analysis of the materials used.

On conclusion, a full report was presented to the contractor and

their client.

THREE OPTIONS WERE PROPOSED:

• Rip and reconstruct the full road;

• Do a second overlay of 40mm; or

• Chip seal the road with a Modifi ed Binder.

Costings were done and the different options were considered.

The fi nal decision was to use a Modifi ed Bitumen Binder and chip

seal the surface.

THE FINAL RESULT WAS:

• Tack Coat - Colfl ex AE 2 applied at 1.5 litres/m2.

• 19mm stone pre-coated with Colcote S.

• Penetration layer of 1.2 litres/m2.

• 9mm stone pre-coated.

• Then, to get a uniform colour, a fog spray of SS 60 diluted

50% was applied at a spray rate of 1 litre/m2.

The work was completed within 8 weeks.

This road was done in 2012 and to date has shown no break-up

or stone loss. The successful outcome of this project is testimony

of the quality of service that Colas Zambia can offer when an

urgent need arises.

A Modifi ed Bitumen plant was constructed at Colas Ndola to add

value to the other products and services offered.

SOUTH AFRICA

MAKING INROADS ON THE N1 HIGHWAYColas South Africa is at present busy completing our fi rst major contracting project on the N1.In September 2015 Colas South Africa was awarded, as a subcontractor for Murray & Roberts Infrastructure and Grinaker-LTA, the

texture slurry and the chip & spray project on a 62km stretch of the N1 between Polokwane and Mokopane.

The job required 930 000sqm of texture slurry, 20 000sqm of coarse slurry, and 1 110 000sqm of rubber single seal. The slurry,

bitumen rubber spraying and chipping was carried out using Colas in-house labour and equipment. The main challenge that remained

was the scale of the seal operation. It required the mobilisation of our trusted rubber blending team, as well as the recruitment of

almost all members of a new chip spreading team at short notice.

This project represents a major step change in our contracting endeavour, when compared to the previous largest chipping project

of 40 000sqm.

The quality of the work delivered has been praised by both the engineer and the client. The delivery of this project demonstrates to the

industry that Colas has acquired the capability to deliver large projects on major roads in South Africa.

The completion date is on track for mid-May 2016.

COLAS DEVELOPING LOCAL BUSINESS As part of the Enterprise and Supplier Development Programme we are running at Colas South Africa, we identifi ed two emerging businesses. Colas supplies them with infrastructure support, assistance and various opportunities to maximise and grow their business interests.

DADA SKILLS DEVELOPMENT Jabulani Dada is the Managing Director of Dada Skills Development, a training service provider based at their Hawkins Street offi ces in Cape Town. He is currently assisting Colas with various forms of training, and has grown the business to the extent where he is now also able to offer training to other companies in the construction sector.

SKOSANA TRAINING AND WELLNESS Motsidisi Skosana owns Skosana Training and Wellness, based at the Colas offi ces in Greenstone, Edenvale. She is a wellness sister who is heading up a wellness programme for the staff at Colas Chamdor. Her services include health screening and counselling. The goal is to develop this programme further throughout the country.

CAPSA EXHIBITION AT SUN CITYColas participated in the CAPSA exhibition, the 11th Conference on Asphalt Pavements for Southern Africa, which took place at Sun City in August 2015. The exhibition was well attended and provided impressive interaction with various stakeholders in the industry.

MINING INDABA IN CAPE TOWNIn February 2016 Colas exhibited at the Mining Indaba in Cape Town, which is the world’s largest mining investment conference, the world’s third largest mining conference, and Africa’s largest mining event. This allowed Colas to capitalise on the opportunities available within Africa’s mining industry.

These interests test our skills and ability in other areas outside work, and enable us to return and face our daily work challenges with more enthusiasm and drive. Roxanne plays centre-mid for the Bothasig Ladies Soccer Football Club. She has been playing for the past 9 years.

Last year her team was unbeaten for the season and, to top it all, they were crowned club champions, winning the club fi nal championship at the end of the year. It is good to see that our ladies do not only take on the challenges in the construction industry, but also show a strong competitiveness on the sportsfi eld.
