For many people, belief in the paranormal derives from personal experience of face-to-face interviews withastrologers, pal m readers, aura and Tarot readers, and spirit mediums. These encounters typically involve cold reading, aprocess in which a reader makes calculated guesses abo ut a c lient's back grou nd and prob lems and, d ependi ng on the reaction,elaborates a reading which seems to the client so uniquely appropriate that it carries with it the illusion of having beenproduce d by par ano rmal means. The cold read ing process is shown to depen d initially on the B arn um effect, the tendenc yfor people to embrace generalized personalit y descriptions as idiosyncratically their own. Psychological research into theBarnum effect is critically reviewed, and uses of the effect by a professional magician are described. This is followed bydetailed analysis of the cold reading performances o f a spirit medium. Fut ure research shoul d investigate the degree to whichcold readers may have convince d themselves that they actually possess psychic or para norm al abilities.Key words. Tho ugh there is in factno record that he ever made such a remark, Barnum didclaim that his success depended on pr oviding in his shows 'alittle something for everybody'. Both the cynicism and hisrecipe for success are relevant to unde rstan ding the persis-tent tend ency for people to embrace fake personalit y descrip-tions as uniquely their own. This in turn gives a particularaptness to Paul Meehl's phrase, the Barnum effect, to de-scribe the phe nom eno n 19.Modern interest in the Barnum effect among psychologistsdates from Fo rer' s classic experiment in which a group of 39under gradu ate psychology students were given the Diagnos -tic Interest Blank v. A week later every stude nt was providedwith the same pe rsonality description, but was led to believethat each description was uniquely different, having beenderived from the test results. The stude nts were the n asked torate the accuracy o f their 'indiv idual ' personal ity descrip-tions on a scale of 0 (poor) to 5 (perfect). Of the 39 students ,only 5 rated it below 4, and no one rated it below 2 (average).The average rating was 4.3.Forer's initial concern was with personality theory and as-sessment 8, and the relevance of this effect to und ersta ndin g'psychic' and apparently paranormal effects was not, to be-gin with, widely recognized. As late as 1962, P. A. Ma rks andW. Seeman were calling for the term 'Barnum effect' to berestricted to test-derived clinical personalit y descriptions ofpatients which are so general (and trivial) that they apply toeverybody 18. But the fact tha t Forer had obtai ned his gener-alized personality description not from stand ard texts in per-sonality theory but from a newsstand astrology book indi-cated tha t the Barn um effect might be significant in contextsfar beyond the clinical.

Forer's original personality description is perfectly servic-able even today. It was presented as numbered sentences;here it is as a cont inuou s parag raph: 'You have a great needfor other people to like and admire you. You have a tende ncyto be critical of yourself. You have a great deal of unusedcapacity which you have not turned to your advantage.While you have some perso nality weaknesses, you are gener-ally able to compensate for them. Your sexual adjustmenthas presented some problems for you. Disciplined and self-controlled outside, you tend to be worrisome and insecureinside. At times you have serious doubts as to whether youhave made the right decision or done the right thing. Youprefer a certain amount of change and variety and becomedissatisfied when hemm ed in by restrictions an d limitations.You pride yourself as an independent thinker and do notaccept others' statements without satisfactory proof. Youhave fou nd it unwise to be too frank in revealing yourself toothers. At times y ou are extroverted, affable, sociable, whileat other times you are introverted , wary, reserved. Some ofyour aspirations tend to be prett y unrealistic. Security is oneof your major goals in life.' Parts of Forer's phraseology -'sexual adjust ment' - might be effectively put in more con-temporary language, and there are current preoccupationswhich could be used to make the description even more im-mediately appealing to contemporary readers. But this is adescription designed to be given to young people of bothsexes, and it is remarkable how well it wears after almost 40years. Slight variations on the original Forer descriptionhave been used i n numer ous studies in the 1950s, 1960s, and]970s, all in one form or an othe r replicating the remarkab lesusceptib ility of subjects to the Barnu m effect 3, 4, 6, 14There has been less agreement, however, o n exactly why theBarnum effect works as well as it does.
