A famous tourist landmark, Pandav Cavesare perched on a small hillock. According tolocal legends and popular belief, the cavesprovided shelter for the Pandavas duringtheir period of exile as stated in the Hinduepic Mahabharata, The place consists of 6caves, one each for Yudhishtir, Bheem,Arjun, Nakul, Sahdev and Draupadi.Currently a protected monument ofPachmari, these 1,000-year-old rock-cutcaves overlook an attractive garden.

Among the caves, 'Draupadi Kuti' is themost clean and airy, while the dark one iscalled as the 'Bheem Kothari'. Apart fromoffering a shelter to Pandavas, the cavesalso acted as a refuge to Buddhist monks in1st Century. 

2 Apsara Vihar (Fairy Pool)

Apsara Vihar or Fairy Pool offers a shining silver fallcascading down five levels to form five littlebathing pools called Panchali Kund, thenfalling another 30 ft to create thespectacular Fairy Pool itself. Away from thewater, there are great views to be had if youclimb up the lingam-shaped peak ofChauragarh. 

For a scenic 2 hour walk, take the bridlepath around Astachal (the old Monte Rosa)rejoining the road near the huge cave ofReechgarh, and passing by the DorothyDeep rock shelter with prehistoric cavepaintings.

3 Satpura Tiger Reserve

The Satpura Range, to the north and west ofPachmarhi, lies theSatpura Tiger Reserve, sloping down to theNarmada and Tawa valleys, with spectacularscenery and an abundance of wildlife. Tospot bison and sambar, one could make ahalf-day safari to the reserve by jeep fromthe Neemghan Gate, about 7 km from town,or a full day trip to Bori or Kajrisanctuaries. 

To do the full 200 km circuit, especially ifyou’re after a big cat, allow at least a 3-daytrip with nights spent at the Churna andMaghai Forest Rest Houses. These comewith double beds but no electricity. Veg foodcan be arranged at Maghai, but for Churnayou have to carry your own supplies.

4 Dhupgarh

Satpura Mountain Range, Pachmarhi,Madhya Pradesh, India

Dhupgarh is the highest point in the Satpura Rangeand offers splendid views of the hills andforest at sunset and sunrise. Located at anelevation of 1,350 m, the point can bereached by hiring a Gypsy. Make sure tohave a guide accompany you as they knowthe area inside out. The place provides greatphotography opportunities and is ideal forshutterbugs!
