“A house is made of walls and beams; a home is built of love and dreams.” Our homes are a sanctuary: somewhere we run and hidewhen the world has waged war against us. A place were Dad pushed you down the driveway on your first bike; where you laughed during a

holiday, surrounded by your loved ones; where we grew old, and sat on the front porch, watching the sunrise.A house is merely a structure. Some architect’s grand design, attempting to capture beauty and grace in wood and glass. What brings

life to a house, what brings beauty, is the memories that float in the air, and wind themselves around the tilting trellis in the front garden;the laughter that echoes in the hallways, and gently brushes the air like the wind in the old oak tree, rocking the tire swing back and forth.

As children, we dream of the day that we will leave home, and venture out into the world. We feel so invincible, sure that nothing theworld can throw at us would force us to return to our hometown, to our parents, and our childhood home. But something eventually goeswrong: a failed marriage, lost job, death of a loved one…and we come running back, eagerly seeking comfort and shelter from the abuse ofadult life. And we are comforted as we sit in our old bedroom, staring at the pictures on the wall, the old scratches on the door from tantrumslong past, and the scuffed floorboards from the MANY redecorations undergone.

Why do we run back home? The familiarity, and the childish belief that the big scary monsters can’t get us as long as we are safe in ourbed. Home is where we can be ourselves, and not worry about being judged, or scorned. We can speak our minds, dress in sweatpants, drinkcoffee on the couch, and discuss anything from politics to Algebra tests until 2 am. Home is what forms us, and molds our character for laterin life. When we feel lost, or alone, unsure of where to turn next, we need the familiar, the known, and acceptance of our childhood.

So we sit on the porch, and stare at the old tree in the yard. We find the old tire swing, and we climb to our old hiding place in the ancientoak tree. As the sun sets, we know that this is home: not because we grew up here, or our parents live here. It’s because for one moment, weknow that despite everything, we belong somewhere.
