DIVERSITY.
Look at Our Leaders!
On Saturday, January 20th, the Student Wellness Action Team from
Ecole Beau Meadow School were invited to participate in the University
of Alberta's Alberta Student Leadership Summit. Students practiced at
school for a month and prepared a slideshow presentation. Their discus-
sion topic was Leadership at a Young Age. At the summit, they shared
personal experiences with leadership and their opinions on how to encour-
age kids to get involved in their community, as well as insights into how to
speak to children and give them the tools needed to build successful
leaders. At the end of their presentation, students broke into small
groups and answered the questions that audience members had. The day
provided excellent public speaking practice for the students in attend-
ance. It was inspiring to see how well the students spoke to the group
and how they came together as a team to present.

Accountability Pillar Survey
As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for
Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we’re equipping students for success.
The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators consisting of surveys of students, parents and
teachers on various aspects of quality; student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion
rates; and provincial assessments of student learning.
From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability
Pillar Survey. In January, parents of students in grades 4-6, will receive a survey from Alberta Edu-
cation. In February, students in grades 4-6 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at
school.
All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with the school. In addition to Eng-
lish and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Cree, Korean,
Spanish and Tagalog.
Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your
child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly.
Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2016, and will be reported publicly as
part of their 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports.

Upcoming Events this month...
Freedom to Read Week - February 21-27, 2016
Over the decades, many well-known children’s books have been challenged or banned. Did you know that Dr.
Seuss’ book, The Lorax, was banned from a public school in California because some forestry advocates felt it persuaded children against logging? And again, in 2015 yet another Captain Underpants book has been challenged (read this interview with Dav Pilkey to find out more http://www.theguardian.com/childrens-books-site/2015/aug/31/banned-books-captain-underpants-dav-pilkey).
The Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees our right to read whatever we choose and this annual
event promotes and encourages us to reaffirm our right to intellectual freedom. Visit this link to know
more: http://www.freedomtoread.ca/
“Let children read whatever they want and then talk about it with them. If parents and kids can talk together, we won't have as much censorship because we won't have as much fear.” ― Judy Blume
