Sealed Key Switch Series 95060Fully sealed to IP-67, (immersible) these switches are ruggedly constructed from engineering thermoplastic, with an integral Deutsch connector. Suitable for use as rotary switches as well as for ignition.

Tested to SAE J259 for ignition switches. Plastic facenut and nickel-plated brass backing nut. Supplied with two matching double bitted keys, with or without TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) key boot. Mounting stem M22 x 1.5 is 0.85" long (21.6mm) and 0.87" diameter (22.0mm ). Double-D mounting hole is 22.5mm diameter with two flat sides at 9.75mm from the center. Maximum panel thickness 8mm. For replacement keys see page 5. 10A at 12V DC, 5A at 24V DC.

Clamshell retail units 95060-50BP and 95060-60BP contain switch and wire harness (wires and Deutsch connector.) 95060-50BP contains switch 95060; 95060-60BP contains switch 95060-03. Wire colors conform to ABYC specifications.

Suitable for harsh environments whether on land or at sea. They are corrosion-resistant, often with brass cases and extra seals. Moisture-repellent insulators, coded locks with 2 brass keys. For 6-36V DC applications.

4-Position

M-832 Plastic Body BP Key is removable only in the Off position, spring return to IGN. Electrical ratings at 6-36V DC: 15A Ignition, 5A Start. Six nickel-silver screw terminals. Durable plastic case and stem with PVC boot for added weather protection. Long mounting stem 2.00" (50.8mm) long, fits panels up to 1 3/8" (34.9mm) thick, and with 7/8" diameter hole (22.2mm) Fits many boats, including Bayliner, ChrisCraft, Sea Ray.

M-932 Key is removable only in the Off position, spring return to IGN. Electrical ratings at 12V DC: 5A Ignition, 5A Start, 2A Choke.

Sealed Switches with Pilot Lights25A at 12V DC. LED or incandescent. These general purpose switches are suitable for many kinds of marine applications. They are weather-resistant with contact areas sealed to IP66 (high pressure wash resis-tant). Switches snap into standard rocker switch holes 1.45" x 0.08" (36.8 x 21.1mm) in panels from 0.09" to 0.19" thick (2.4 x 4.7mm). Pilot lights are independent or dependent, as noted. They have silver contacts, which give superior switching performance. Housing is matte black.

Wiring your switch: There are up to 6 terminals on this switch series. Identify each type of switch by matching it with the appropriate wiring diagram in each section. Diagrams represent the switch as seen from the back. Dotted lines indicate the internal connections of the pilot light(s).

LED Wide Lens 58312 Series These have bright LED illumination with high-visibility wrap-around lenses. Corrosion-resisitant nickel-plated brass blade terminals provide good electrical contact. For switches without pilot lights see page 11.

Regular Lens 58328 Series These have incandescent illumination and brass blade terminals. The BP kits come with a selection of snap-in lenses. For switches without pilot lights see page 11.

Small Lens 56327/58327 Series These are identical to 58238 series with incandescent bulbs, but they have one or two small circular lenses. 56327 series has brass screw terminals, 58327 series has brass blade terminals. For switches without pilot lights see page 11.

M-58031 switches have a black actuator; 58332 switches are supplied in retail BP only and are supplied with one black and one gray snap-on actuator.These general-purpose switches are suitable for all kinds of applications. They are weather-resistant with contact areas sealed to IP66 (high pressure wash-resistant). Switches are uniform with Round Pilot Light series of switches and are recognized at UL 1500 (Ignition protection for marine products). With neoprene gasket/panel seal. These switches conveniently snap into a standard rectangular mounting hole 1.48" x 0.83" (36.8 x 21.1mm) in panels from 0.09" to 0.19" thick (2.4 x 4.7mm). Plastic housing, bezel and actuator. Dependent Illumination When the switch is On, the handle is illuminated.

Independent Illumination Actuation of the switch does not affect the illumination of the handle. The switch can be On or Off, and illumination is usually controlled by another switch. This mode can be used to light a whole bank of switches, and is especially useful for locating switches in the dark. A switch with independent illlumination can be converted to a dependent switch by adding a jumper wire.

M-597 Emergency Cutoff Switch BP Weather-resistant switch provides added safety for boat operators. The lanyard connects the boater to a switch which kills the ignition circuit if the boater falls overboard, or is at an unsafe distance from the controls, thus preventing a dangerous runaway situation. Unlike other devices, the M-597 can be turned on again if need be by a boater other than the operator.

Switch can be installed either in boat systems that require a grounded emergency stop, or in systems that have an open circuit emergency stop. The switch works on virtually any powerboat with an inboard or outboard motor. Full wiring instructions are included. For safety, this switch should only be installed by a technically competent person.

Switch housing dimensions 2 3/4" x 2" (69.9 x 50.8mm) requires a space of 1/2" (12.7mm) behind the panel, and mounts in a 1 1/2" (38.1mm) diameter hole. Rubber coated toggle switch is sealed to IP-66 to protect against salt spray and water ingress. Strong self-retracting coiled lanyard has a clip for attachment to the operator. 10A at 12-24V DC.

For safety or lifesaving applications, the switch should be installed by a qualified individual. User assumes all responsibility for determining the suitability of this product for his application.

Pole refers to an independent arrangement of contacts, all connected to a center contact or pivot. SP switches have at least one electrical circuit. DP switches have at least two independent circuits (and act like two identical switches that are mechanically linked). Do not confuse ‘pole’ with ‘terminal’. The DPST switch, for example, has four terminals, but it is a DP, not a 4P switch.

Throw refers to the numbers of On positions a switch has. ST switches close at least one circuit at only one position. The other position of the handle is Off. DT switches close at least one circuit in the Up position, as well as the Down position (On-On). A DT switch can also have a center position (frequently On-Off-On).

The following switch diagrams illustrate the most common types of toggle and rocker switch.

How to select the right switch1. Rocker or Toggle?

It’s your choice - Cole Hersee has rockers and toggles available in all electrical configurations, and in different styles.

2. Switch rating: very important

a) You need to know the voltage of your system (12V or 24V).

b) You need to know how much current will be running in the circuit being switched. Always select a switch equal to or greater in amperage to the amperage rating of the circuit in your application.

3. Switch configuration

Check out the diagram in this section that explains the difference between single/double pole and single/double throw. Switches are marked SPST, SPDT, DPST or DPDT.

Match the circuit diagram to your needs, or replace an existing switch with one of the same configuration.

4. Waterproof/water-resistant

Cole Hersee uses the term water-resistant for marine switches. ‘Waterproof’ properly refers to switches that will be used submerged underwater.

Determine how much exposure your switch will receive, and select water-resistant for switches which might receive exposure to salt spray or rain. The international IP rating demotes resistance to ingress of dust or liquid. IP66 is high pressure wash resistant. IP67 is immersible.

Many Cole Hersee toggle switches are ‘sealed’, containing 0-rings in the stem of the actuator, and have gaskets to exclude moisture. Others are completely coated in plastic and usually have wire terminals. Such switches are a good choice for use in boats.

5. Terminals

Switches come with blade terminals, screw terminals or integral wire terminals. Cole Hersee recommends screw terminals (or wire terminals in a plastic-coated switch) for marine applications.

6. Switches with pilot lights

Many of our switches contain an integral pilot light which can be very helpful, and the lenses are available in different colors. Cole Hersee 58328 Series switches come with a variety of lenses in different colors – you simply snap in the color you want.

There’s one more thing to know – illuminated switches come in Dependent or Independent types. With a Dependent switch, the pilot is On when the switch is On, and Off when the switch is Off. The illumination of Independent switches or switch groups is usually controlled by a master switch independent of the circuit that the illuminated switch controls - it can be convenient to have all switches illuminated so that they can be seen in the dark.

How to Identify a 6-terminal switchYou can find out the type of rocker or toggle switch by a quick visual inspection.

Look at the back of the switch, where the terminals are. Notice that there are six possible terminal positions.

Toggle and rocker switches are designed so that each vertical set of terminals makes up one pole.

You can see immediately that a switch with three vertically- organized terminals must be a SPDT. Now check the actuator (rocker or toggle handle) to see if the switch is 2-position or 3-position.

If it only has two terminals, it must be a SPST, the simplest of all switch configurations. Notice that the two terminals are organized vertically (never side-by-side). Terminals can be located at 1 and 2, 1 and 3, or 2 and 3.

If it has terminals at 1, 3, 4 and 6, it must be a DPST. You can see that it utilizes the left side (pole 1) and right side (pole 2) of the switch — two poles (DP).

If it has six terminals, it’s a DPDT. Check the actuator to see if the switch is 2-position or 3-position.

Solenoid relays can generally remotely switch a heavier current than is used in regular relays or microrelays. By using a solenoid, the amount of heavy wiring needed to power the load is reduced, since the control circuit mounted on the panel typically utilizes a smaller wire gauge.

Solenoids are commonly used to control starter and winch motors, and they have many other uses on vehicles of all kinds.

The diagram shows a magnetic coil surrounding a contact plunger. Before energization, the plunger is not electrically connected to the control circuit. When the control circuit is energized, the electromagnetic force induced in the coil attracts the plunger, which moves to close the load circuit. When the control circuit is de-energized, the spring-loaded plunger returns to its normal state and the load circuit is broken. In continuous duty applications, energization of the coil causes heating, therefore the solenoid housing will become warm even in normal operation.

1. A Remote Battery Isolator In a two-battery system, use the Latching Solenoid to isolate the batteries from each other, and prevent battery drain from the higher into the lower. It has an advantage over electronic Battery Isolators (see page 47), in that it will not produce a voltage drop during operation.

2. A Remote Battery Disconnect Use it as a remote Battery Disconnect Switch. This eliminates the need for heavy gauge wiring between the control panel and the battery.

Latching Solenoid Relay Applications

Very little heat is generated, because the coil is de-energized when the solenoid is On. A selector switch allows use of the first battery, the second battery, or both batteries simultaneously. This provides back-up starting power in an emergency. Either or both batteries can be selected for energizing.

These switches combine the functions of Battery Selector and Master Disconnect Switches to give four battery power options:

• Power cut off at the source. • Power On, Battery 2.• Power On, Battery 1. • Power On, both Batteries.

Battery selector switches provide a positive battery disconnect, which has many advantages:

AFD is a useful built-in feature that will protect the alternator if the boat operator accidentally turns the switch to Off with the engines running. Battery Selector Switch M-752 has the integral AFD, which is a second switch inside the body of the main switch that is electri-cally isolated from the power switching circuit. In switch operation the AFD switch closes before the battery switch contacts close, and it opens before they open. It’s connected in the field wire between the voltage regulator and the alternator, and it prevents the alterna-tor from producing power when the AFD switch is open. It protects the diodes inside the alternator, which could be destroyed by the electrical surge if the battery switch is suddenly turned Off when the alternator is still running.

Starting Batteries (SLI)SLI - Starting, Lighting, Ignition. These batteries are designed to deliver very high amperage for a short time. They are usually constructed of many thin plates to get the amps out quickly and recharge quickly. While this is a strong point for starting, they are not designed to withstand deep discharge cycles that come with powering engine offloads. Starting batteries survive the longest when they are kept in the 95%+ state of charge. They are very useful when setting up a dual battery bank setup with one bank dedicated to starting, but are not the best choice when using a single battery (or single bank) for starting and powering loads.

SLI batteries are rated in two ways: CCA - Cold Cranking Amps: The maximum amperage they can deliver at 0ºF for 30 seconds.

MCA or CA - Marine Cranking Amps or Cranking Amps: The same as CCA except at 32ºF (freezing point).

Deep Cycle BatteriesThese batteries are designed to take lower amperage draw over a several hours, even days. They are constructed with fewer thick plates that are designed to give off power, rather than supplying lots of amps quickly. They recover well from deep discharge down to 20% state of charge, but last the longest if allowed to discharge no lower than 50% state of charge.

Deep Cycle batteries are rated in two ways: Amp hours: The total cumulative amps a battery can deliver over a 20 hour period. So if the rating is 100, it can deliver 5 amps for 20 hours before it gets to 10.5V.

Reserve Capacity (RC at 25A): The number of minutes that a fully charged battery can deliver 25A before it reaches 10.5A. RC is the best number to look at, as it is a more realistic measure, and it can be used to compare batteries.

Dual Purpose BatteriesThese batteries are a hybrid between SLI and deep cycle batteries. They have plates that are thicker than in SLI batteries, but thinner than deep cycle. They don’t start as well as a SLI battery and they don’t supply as much power as a deep cycle, but if you only have one battery or battery bank, they are a good compromise. These batteries are frequently listed by both CCA and RC for comparison purposes.

Battery ConstructionWhile Lithium Ion (LI) and Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) are commonly used in electronic devices such as laptops and cellphones, and are starting to show up in hybrid vehicles, you still can’t beat lead acid for price/performance combina-tion, and they are the most commonly used type in vehicle applications.

Lead-acid batteries are usually one of three types: Flooded, Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) or Gel.

Flooded batteries are the classic batteries, and they can be purchased as types that are sealed and maintenance-free, or ones that allow you to add water. They are usually the least expensive battery type in a group size. The unsealed units are not spillproof and if tipped over are likely to leak acid. Even the sealed units are more likely to leak than the other types of batteries

AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries have glass material between the plates that holds the electrolyte. AGM batteries (as well as Gel batteries) will not leak acid if broken. AGM batteries are no-maintenance, and are sealed against fumes, hydrogen, leakage, or non-spilling even if they are broken. They can survive most freezes. AGM batteries are "recombinant"; which means the oxygen and hydrogen recombine in the battery and prevent the loss of water through electrolysis. The recombining is highly efficient, so almost no water is lost. AGM batteries self-discharge slowly (from 1% to 3% per month), so they can sit in storage for much longer periods without charging. The plates in AGM's are closely packed and firmly mounted, and will withstand shock and vibration better than standard batteries.

Gel Batteries are an adaptation of the flooded lead acid battery. A gelling agent is added to the electrolyte to decrease motion inside the battery case. Many gel batteries are VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Acid) batteries and use one-way valves in place of open vents. This helps the gases to recombine into water in the battery. "Gel Cell" batteries are non-spillable even if they are broken. Gel cells must be charged at a lower voltage than flooded or AGM, to prevent excess gas from damaging the cells. Rapid charging of a Gel Battery with a conventional charger may cause irreparable damage!

Continuous: This is the rating that is meant to indicate what the device can handle forever with no interruption. It is usually measured as the amperage that a device can handle for one hour without exceeding the maximum allowed temperature rise at the terminals. Continuous rated switches may be used as intermittent switches.

Intermittent: This is the amount of current the switch can handle for 5 minutes with the same temperature rise as above. Intermittent rat-ing of a switch is always higher than continuous rating. Intermittent rated switches may not be used as continuous rated switches.

Inrush: This the short duration rating of the switch. This rating is meant to reflect the ability of the switch to withstand a short term, high current event like starting. A large diesel engine starting in cold weather can draw close to 2000A for about 30 seconds. A switch can have multiple inrush ratings to help match your application.

If you leave a fully charged battery in an inactive boat, it could be dead in as little as two months. Onboard electronics continue to draw small quiescent currents to retain their memory, even when the boat is off.

Two solutions are to install a Master Disconnect Switch (Section E3) or a Low Voltage Disconnect (Section E1).

1. Use the 75912 for switching two motors or two battery banks simultaneously. The two circuits can be different voltages such as 12V and 24V.

2. Extra safety. When used in one circuit the 75912 controls the negative and positive sides of the circuit.

Your fully charged battery could be dead within as little as two months if your boat is inactive!

Today’s boats all have electronics, and although they require only a very small amount of current to maintain their memory, over time that’s enough to kill a battery.

Any minor breakdown in insulation in the boat’s electrical system can result in the same problem. Insulation degradation can occur as a result of abrasion or infiltration of contaminants such as sea-water, or from the use of test prods.

Apart from the disappointment and inconvenience, there are two very important reasons to avoid complete battery discharge.

First, contaminants can crystallize on the battery plates, and the battery will no longer hold a full charge – an irreversible process. The second problem occurs with cold temperatures. When a bat-tery is fully charged, its electrolyte freezes at -83ºF (-64ºC), but when it’s discharged it freezes at a higher temperature closer to 32ºF (0ºC). Resulting ice buildup can break intercell connections or even crack the case.

A good way to prevent a dead battery is to fully charge it, then disconnect the ground cable. In this state the battery can hold a charge for about a year. This procedure is highly recommended when a boat is stored, but it is inconvenient for short term storage. Installation of a Cole Hersee Master Disconnect or a SureStartTM Low Voltage Disconnect will prevent problems.

Nylon Brackets and Busbars Brackets in a range from 4-gang to 10 gang conveniently house and organize the stud-type circuit breakers and can be used with slotted busbars from 2-gang to 12-gang to create a variety of circuitries.

Your fully charged battery could be dead within as little as two months if your boat is inactive!

Today’s boats all have electronics, and although they require only a very small amount of current to maintain their memory, over time that’s enough to kill a battery.

Any minor breakdown in insulation in the boat’s electrical system can result in the same problem. Insulation degradation can occur as a result of abrasion or infiltration of contaminants such as sea-water, or from the use of test prods.

Apart from the disappointment and inconvenience, there are two very important reasons to avoid complete battery discharge.

First, contaminants can crystallize on the battery plates, and the battery will no longer hold a full charge – an irreversible process. The second problem occurs with cold temperatures. When a bat-tery is fully charged, its electrolyte freezes at -83ºF (-64ºC), but when it’s discharged it freezes at a higher temperature closer to 32ºF (0ºC). Resulting ice buildup can break intercell connections or even crack the case.

A good way to prevent a dead battery is to fully charge it, then disconnect the ground cable. In this state the battery can hold a charge for about a year. This procedure is highly recommended when a boat is stored, but it is inconvenient for short term storage. Installation of a Cole Hersee Master Disconnect or a SureStartTM Low Voltage Disconnect will prevent problems.

Fire can result when a wire gets overheated because there's too much current flowing through it. It is important to use the correct wire size that's appropriate to the amperage and length of the wire that you're using. Use the wire rating next above the amperage needed.

40212 Dual Rate Electronic Alarm 12V DC Utilizes advanced integrated circuit surface mount technology. Negative ground. Use with two input sources to warn of two different hazardous conditions. Sounds at two different rates: one sensor triggers a fast-rate alarm, the second actuates a slower rate alarm tone. Also available in 24V. Order number 40224.

Minimum sound level: 90dB. Lightweight molded plastic housing. Solid-state circuitry. Size: 2.005"L x 1.185"W x .930"H (50.4 x 30.3 x 23.6mm). Plugs into Cole Hersee Sealed Beam Connector 3032 or 3029, Delphi (Packard) 12033871, or accepts individual connectors for 1/4" (6.4mm) blades.

40205 SigmaTM Alarm Switch This item is both switch and alarm, and contains a highly audible warning signal within the rocker switch.

Compatible with microprocessor-based systems, the alarm switch can provide status warning in such applications as: door/hatch ajar, high/low pressure, high/low temperature, on-off, and many other situations, as well as providing an alarm override for the Cole Hersee SureStartTM Low Voltage Disconnect Switch 48510 and 48512.

LED power source 5V or 12V DC; alarm power source 12V DC. Fits standard panel opening. Designed to meet SAE J1455 environmental standard. See page 13.
