Principal ’s Reflection

The 2019-2020 school year has been a year to remember. Although it has been marked by the unexpected three month suspension of classes due to COVID-19, we cannot forget that two terms of regular classes occurred and that many projects and events occured during the first seven months of the year.

Throughout the school year, many of the activities and initiatives undertaken have fallen within one of our three school priorities of Literacy & Numeracy, our French Immersion Mission and/or Social Justice. Even during our three months of remote learning, we continued to focus on these three pillars to guide our planning and teaching practices. As you review the Community Report the centrality of these three guiding values should be evident. It should also be clear that these big three foundational elements will continue to influence our planning for years to come. The essence of our school commnuty must be reflective of our learning, our cul-ture and our inclusivity.

If one lesson has to be learnt from this past years events, it is that commu-nity is everything. We have worked together and supported each other through these difficult and challenging times. Students, parents and teach-ers have all had to be flexible and collaborative. We thank our parents and guardians who have worked tirelessly to support learning at home. This was not an easy task!

School priority progress

1) Uphold and demonstrate social justice values and beliefs to ensure a safe learning environment, equity and high academic achievement for all students; by building partnerships that allow for the examination of long held beliefs, perceptions and gaps in our thinking and student achievement. Successes • Intentional purchase of books and resources for classroom libraries that reflect

diverse culture, perspectives and histories. • Communication and dialogue with parents from the Diversity Advisory

Committee to gain insight concerning social justice issues, perspectives and feedback.

• Partnership from Elder Joe McLellan to infuse an Aboriginal perspective into our teaching.

• Student Leadership Group to give students a voice and ownership of the issues and activities important to them.

• Rebranding of ESNI panther logo that represent the core values of: Persévérance = perseverance Politesse = politeness Pouvoir = power Patience = patience Partage = sharing • Town Hall with ESNIAC at the beginning of the remote learning to hear feedback

from parents as to what was working and what could be improved.

2) Improve and integrate literacy, numeracy and critical thinking across subject areas; through curricular integration and planning to enhance critical thinking, numeracy, literacy behaviours and achievement. Successes • Professional development opportunity for 6 teachers on cross-curricular

integration of subject and inquiry in planning and teaching practices. • Sustained emphasis on the reading—writing connection through intentional and

effective planning of rich tasks. • Planning and incorporation of rich tasks that foster greater levels of critical

thinking skills. • Increased use of data informed instruction planning and practices to promote

growth in student literacy and numeracy achievement.

3) Improve oral French opportunities, global capacity and confidence; by designing meaningful and rich tasks and activities that foster French oral language development. Successes • School improv team and divisional league that allowed student to explore

creative French expression in an authentic and spontaneous setting. Spectators also benefited from hearing their peers model and speak in French.
