(Colistin sulphate)

Colistin is a polypeptide antibiotic , was obtained from a

fermentation broth inoculated with Bacillus polimyxa

var. colistinus which had been isolated from soil

sampled of Fukushima Prefecture , Japan.

Anti-bacterial spectrum

Gram-negative :

E.Coli

Shigella spp

Salmonella spp

Enterobacter spp

Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Klebsiella pneumoniae

Campylobacter (vibrio) coli .

Characteristics :

1)Colistin is effective against Gram – bacteria such as E.Coli and

Salmonella.

2)Colistin does not select resistant bacteria in vivo and its resistance

is not transferred by the R-factor.

3)Colistin is not absorbed from the digestive tract of poultry hence

no residue is observe.

4)Colistin has a synergistic effect against bacteria when used in

combination with Zinc-bacitracin.

5)Colistin is effective as a growth promoter for broiler. It is also used

in the prevention and control of infectious enteritis in broiler.

Synergism and Antagonism :

Colistin is compatible with tetracyclines, sulfas, imidazoles,

Lincomycin and common feed additives. Sometimes is

showed a good synergism with some antibiotics particularly

with bacitracin .There are no experiences of antagonist

effects between Colistin and other antibiotics.

Palatability :

No "medicinal taste" to deter sick animals from eating or

drinking.
