New Media &Architecture

Collaboration project is a project that examines the work between two people, a graphic designer, which is me and an architect, Nicos Petrides.Through research and work together we analyse pyramid properties, history and uses. An interesting abstract film was the final outcome that is based on 3D pyramids and projection mapping.

The Bauhaus was the most influential modernist art school of the 20th century, one whose approach to teaching, and understanding art’s relationship to society and technology, had a major impact both in Europe and the United States long after it closed.

It was shaped by the 19th and early 20th centuries trends such as Arts and Crafts movement, which had sought to level the distinction between fine and applied arts, and to reunite creativity and manufacturing.

Analyzing Shapes

After researching the famous style of Bauhaus that actually it is one of the most famous combinations in design and architecture we ended up talking about shapes that are used both in graphic design and of course architecture. While studying those shapes we both agreed on the fact that square base pyramid was the most interesting 3D shape with really unique properties.

Projection mapping is a really innovative and interesting way to project on buildings and make fun advertisements, games and interactions through the shape of a specific building.

Projection Mapping

Bauhaus

The most famous Egyptian pyramids are those found at Giza, on the outskirts of Cairo. Several of the Giza pyramids are counted among the largest structures ever built.

The Orion correlation theory is a hypothesis in pyramidology. Its central claim is that there is a correlation between the location of the 3 largest pyramids of the Giza pyramid complex and the three middle stars of the constellation Orion.

Research & References

Then using a projector and footage from space and different abstract shapes that were related to pyramid concept, we projected on a wall. The lighting and the shapes that it created were fascinating and really interesting. Projection mapping using pyramids actually made the difference because it change the context of the projector into something else because of its shape.

After that, using a professional studio and camera, I built new 3D pyramids in white matte colour and made a moving image based on abstract space references.

The Artifact and ExperimentsThe Collaboration and Idea

After studying the shape of pyramid and of course history, the fact that has so many interesting facts and theories from ancient time was fascinating. My collaborator and I decided to focus on this relation between pyramids and stars and make a relevant artifact.

Combining previous research on architectural mapping projection and the theory and pyramid shape would be an interesting experiment to see how its visual would look like.

Starting to know how this will work, my collaborator first created some 3D pyramids in Autocad, the architects’ program. Then using the template that he made I used laser-cutter to cut the pyramids and then build them.

Pyramids were made from several materials to experiment with like paper, cardboard, transparent and matte plastic sheets.

Evaluation

Development& Outcome

Studying the architectural world was something new and interesting for myself as well as for my collaborator with graphic design. Generally it was a good collaboration and I learned new things.

As far as the final outcome, I would prefer if I had more time and my collaborator had better knowledge on graphic design, I would love to make this an installation and make something interactive with users actually touch the pyramids and change colour or shapes through the projector.
