Manufacture of Electric Powertrain

• Fuel cell manufacturing• Large scale production of a novel PCB based fuel cell design

• Electric Motor • High volume production facility

• Vehicle as Infrastructure• Fuel cell production vehicles(forklifts) providing grid balancing at peak times

• Vehicle Grid Service• Commercial viability of Electric vehicles in car parks supporting national grid

Hesitations in going electric• Initial Cost• A new production line• New powertrain teams

• It’s a huge change• Teams with decades of experience in internal combustion engines are no

longer relevant

• It’s easier to continue doing what you know best

Zero Emission

Government Legislations are encouraging the manufacture and use of low or zero emission vehicles.

• The UK government aim is for almost every car and van to be a zero emission vehicle by 2050• London will be requiring all new taxi and commercial vehicles to be zero emission by 2018

within the city.

• EU has a target for CO2 emissions to be below 95 grams per km by 2020

• Incentives• Plug in Grant

• Tax exemptions – Fuel duty/ London Congestion charge

Why go Electric?

Why Electric?

New Ultra Low Emission & electric vehicles, UK 2010 - Q1 2015

• Consumer demand

• Eco consumers want a “greener” car

• Cheaper to run• Electric cars offer a substantial cost benefit over the life of the

vehicle

• Cool factor• Tesla, i3, i8 are changing the “milk float” image consumers

normally associate with electric vehicles.

• Competition

• All major manufacturers have an electric vehicle in production or in the pipeline• No one want’s to be left behind

• New manufacturers disrupting the market

Ford Renault Vauxhall Volkswagen

Tesla Toyota Honda Nissan

Mitsubishi Mercedes Jaguar LandRover London Taxi Company

Google Car Apple CarTesla

• Performance• Electric propulsion gives an instant power so can provide a

faster 0-60• Tesla Model S in Ludacris mode can do it in 2.8 seconds

• That’s the same as the 2014 Lamborghini Aventador

• Electric can provide an additional performance boost to internal combustion engine cars

• Enhancing vehicle performance using energy the car otherwise wastes

• Comfort • Low noise

• Plug-In-Hybrid Super car in electric mode – Stealth Mode?• Low maintenance

• Design flexibility• Clean canvas – Design is no longer dictated by engine, gear box,

fuel tank placement• Flat floor (gear box drive shaft tunnel)

• Extra boot space

Future of Car’s• Market for Electric vehicles is expected to have 10% market share by 2020• Efficiency will Improve considerably• Energy recovery systems• Efficient Heat, ventilation and Air Conditioning systems – e.g. Heat blanket by JLR

• Currently systems in Electric vehicles can reduce the range by up to 40 per cent (20% for ICE)

• 300+ miles range• Faster charging• Autonomous• "When I look at the automobile, what I see is that software becomes an increasingly important

part of the car of the future. You see that autonomous driving becomes much more important.“ Tim Cook
