About America’s Promise

Presenter
Presentation Notes
We believe all young people need access to five promises in order to thrive: Caring Adults, Safe Places, A Healthy Start, Effective Education and Opportunities to Serve. It’s important to highlight that for America’s Promise – National Mentoring Month and MENTOR’s work aligns with our first promise, Caring Adults. As we’re thinking about our participation in National Mentoring Month – we’re thinking more broadly about how do we empower and share stories of impact regarding Caring Adults.
Page 21: Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series€¦ · Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series. National Mentoring Month: Mentoring In Real Life. November 17, 2016. Welcome, everyone, to the

Let’s Start Planning!

1. Content Creation vs. Content Curation2. Create a Content Calendar3. Smart, simple messaging is key!4. Engage Your Networks5. Participate in National Mentoring Month events.

• For those who want to create beautiful graphics: Canva - Free graphic creation tool. Canva for Work is free for nonprofits.

• For those who want to get organized on Twitter: Tweetdeck –monitor multiple lists and conversations at once for free.

• For those who want to get smarter on Facebook: Nonprofits on Facebook – offers great resources.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
I have five tips that we used at America’s Promise to help plan, create, curate and share out content for National Mentoring Month. My hope is that you’re able to walk away with information that will help you and your colleagues develop an engagement strategy that works for your organization.

Content Creation vs. Content Curation

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Even though National Mentoring Month kicks off in January – your organization should start planning NOW. The sooner you start planning out your involvement, the easier it will be when the time comes. And that level of involvement varies – your organization might pull out all the stops (videos, graphics, gifs, blogs, etc) and maybe you have limited capacity and decide to repurpose content or share relevant articles. THAT’S OK! The first step is getting together with the right people on your team or at your organization to decide ”what can you do?” Brainstorming is an effective way to determine what you can do within your means. For America’s Promise we usually brainstorm 1-2 months in advance. We asked ourselves: What is our level of effort? Do we need to create content for National Mentoring Month? Do we already have content related to National Mentoring Month? How can we curate content from our partners and from the news? For us we determined that we would create a “how to get involved” news item and have our CEO John Gomperts write a blog. And then we would go back and highlight content from our 2015 report, Don’t Quit on Me which focuses on relationships, caring adult blogs and highlight content from partners. Our Alliance Engagement team identified partners with a focus on mentoring and caring adults and reached out to them for content – we then selected the best of the best to highlight on social media. We were also mindful to look out for articles in the news that was aligned with National Mentoring Month.
Page 23: Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series€¦ · Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series. National Mentoring Month: Mentoring In Real Life. November 17, 2016. Welcome, everyone, to the

Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series

Create a Content Calendar

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Once you determine the type of content you want – the best way to organize it is in calendar form. We utilized the dates in MENTOR’s toolkit to help us determine which content made the most sense during certain times. An example here – we listed the partners who provided us with content in an excel spreadsheet. The contact from APA, the different weeks/themes, the type of content. Additional information that would be helpful for staff and any relevant hashtags.
Page 24: Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series€¦ · Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series. National Mentoring Month: Mentoring In Real Life. November 17, 2016. Welcome, everyone, to the

Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series

Create a Content Calendar

Presenter
Presentation Notes
We then used a word doc with sample tweets/posts to organize ourselves. Digital/social media managers thank you when you give them sample posts – it makes it much easier to share out with people. This year – my recommendation would be work off of the new campaign dates that can be found in the 2017 National Mentoring Month toolkit. These are days where you’re more likely to see a high level of content circulating and being involved in the conversation online can help to increase engagement.
Page 25: Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series€¦ · Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series. National Mentoring Month: Mentoring In Real Life. November 17, 2016. Welcome, everyone, to the

Simple, Smart Messaging

Presenter
Presentation Notes
You want to use messaging that will appeal to the hearts and minds of caring adults but you also want to share stats with them. MENTOR does a great job of providing key messaging in the toolkit and I recommend that you use this and their graphics when you don’t have time to create your own.
Page 26: Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series€¦ · Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series. National Mentoring Month: Mentoring In Real Life. November 17, 2016. Welcome, everyone, to the

Engage Your Networks

Presenter
Presentation Notes
We made sure to engage partners by tagging them in posts and letting them know in advance when we would share their content.
Page 27: Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series€¦ · Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series. National Mentoring Month: Mentoring In Real Life. November 17, 2016. Welcome, everyone, to the

Participate in National Mentoring Month Events

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Engagement goes up when you have an authentic voice and when your audience sees you practicing what you preach. We made sure we were present during the Mentoring Summit and our team coordinated with City Year DC to volunteer for MLK Day. We did this in conjunction with National Mentoring Month. It was something we made sure to tell staff about and we let our partners know as well.
Page 28: Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series€¦ · Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series. National Mentoring Month: Mentoring In Real Life. November 17, 2016. Welcome, everyone, to the

Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series

Bonus: It’s Ok If Things Come Up!

Presenter
Presentation Notes
In January, President Obama gave his State of the Union address and he said something that embodied caring adults and mentoring and we jumped on it.
Page 29: Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series€¦ · Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series. National Mentoring Month: Mentoring In Real Life. November 17, 2016. Welcome, everyone, to the

Recap!

1. Feel free to create content, but be sure to utilize the toolkit AND re-purpose your existing content from your org, partners/affiliates.

2. Making a content calendar will keep you, your staff and external partners organized on what’s happening and what needs to go out.

3. Utilize messaging from the toolkit, but don’t be afraid to use messaging that appeals to the hearts and minds of caring adults (ie: thank you messages, etc).

4. Having an influencer strategy is key. Make a list of people and/or organizations you want to highlight and let them know so they can share too!

5. Participate in National Mentoring Month – it gives your organization a more authentic voice. Twitter chats are a great way to increase engagement and followers.

ENGAGING WITH PUBLIC MEDIAUnderstanding the Public Media System

• PBS is a distributor, does not create content

• Both stations and independent producers (StoryCorps, POV, etc.) create content for PBS

• There are other distributors (APTS, NETA etc.)

• Stations are independent, pay for membership to distributors

• Most stations are TV or Radio, some are both

• Vary widely in their resources, capacity, priorities and programming

Local Public Media Stations

• Pitch Local Stories for News Programs

• Ask about Community Outreach Programs

• Ask about Educational Resources

• Ask about Relevant Content. Offer to cross-promote.

• Ask about local events. Offer to co-sponsor and/or promote.

• Ask about other services for non-profits

• Ask about space rental/donations
