FRIT 7332 Collection Evaluation and Weeding Assignment Description and Rubric NOTE: New Assignment Due Date! Now due by 9 p.m. 12/3!! To complete this assignment you need to select an informational content section of your school library media center, evaluate that section, identify titles that you propose to remove from the collection (weed) and investigate your school and/or district policies about what you should do with those items. Please note that while the principles of collection evaluation and weeding apply to all of your resources, for this assignment you will only select print items. Step 1: Select an appropriate informational section for this assignment. You must select a section with enough resources to complete the assignment but you don’t want to select a section that is so large that you can’t develop a focus. So for example, the entire 500’s (Science) range is too big. Focusing on the 530’s and 540’s might be workable. Post your Dewey range and content focus to the course discussion board this week for feedback. Step 2: Apply the collection evaluation techniques described in this week’s resources to your selection section. Slide 7 of the ppt summarizes these techniques. Your media specialist should be able to help you generate reports from your automation system. Step 3: Based on the results of your evaluation develop a list of items that you propose weeding from the collection. Step 4:

Collection Evaluation and Weeding Assignment Description and Rubric

NOTE: New Assignment Due Date!

Step 1:

Select an appropriate informational section for this assignment.

Step 2:

Apply the collection evaluation techniques described in this week’s resources to your selection section. Slide 7 of the ppt summarizes these techniques. Your media specialist should be able to help you generate reports from your automation system.

Step 3:

Based on the results of your evaluation develop a list of items that you propose weeding from the collection.

Step 4:

Page 2: Collection Evaluation and Weeding Assignment Description and Rubric.pdf

Identify relevant school and/or district policies related to disposing of weeded items. Based on those policies identify what you plan to do with the weeded items.

You will complete your assignment using an online tool called Smore. Smore allows you to create professional, attractive resources that incorporate visuals. Your Smore should have 5 sections:

1. Topic area and justification for selection of that topic 2. Evaluation of the topic section based on use of data 3. Evaluation of the topic section based on curricular needs 4. Items to be weeded 5. Disposal of weeded items

The rubric provides more details about what is expected in each section. You only need to submit the URL for this assignment.

These two examples show how school librarians are using Smore to present quarterly and annual report information. Each incorporates narrative, charts/graphs and visuals.

HHS Library Quarterly Report

Library Annual Report, 2012-13

These examples show how reports with data can be presented in a visually interesting yet professional way. They also provide another opportunity for school librarians to show off their technology skills! Keep in mind that you do NOT need to create the world’s longest Smore! There is no need to repeat information in a chart or graph in your narrative. Be creative and use visuals to tell the story of your “need to weed!”
