There are two ways to start a collection. You can take over an existing collection and add to it, or you can begin with nothing and collect one piece at a time. You should collect things that will bring you satisfaction in the years to come. When thinking about what to collect, consider the following:

I am interested in:

• Beauty (glass or porcelain)

• History (antiques, paintings, or Girl Guard memorabilia)

• Nature (shells, rocks, insects, or leaves)

• Mechanics (toys, clocks, or banks)

The space I have to fill is:

• Large (antique picture frames, rocking chairs, or rugs)

• Small (stamps, glass items, jewelry, antique dolls, rocks, or Girl Guard memorabilia)

This is the collection that I have chosen:

Task 1Complete the following task.

1. VISIT A MUSEUM.

Select a display or collection that interests you and find out the following:

How the museum obtained the collection:

How the items are cataloged:

How the items are displayed:

Keep records on each item in your collection. You can use 3”x 5” cards, a notebook, or computer. Include a short history, why it is a collectible, the date and place of origin, and its value. Share this information with your troop.

To get the most out of your collection, you should know some interesting and amusing facts about individual items. Research three items in your collection and write a short paragraph about each of them.

Task 2Complete the following task.

3. SOME COLLECTIONS MAY BE QUITE VALUABLE.

Estimate the value of your collection. Here are a few places to search for help:

• Sites like eBay may be helpful for finding out how much your collection is worth. Log on and search for items you own or ones similar to items in your collection to see if you can establish their value.

• If you collect things like baseball cards, dolls or teddy bears, check online to see if there is a collectors club that may have established price guidelines.

• Kovel’s Antiques and Collectibles is an annual guide that publishes prices for a broad range of collectible items. Check your local library to see if they have a copy.

My collection is worth approximately:

Once you know the value of your collection, know how to protect and insure your collection. Contact a local insurance agent or log on to www.treasuresmagazine.com/care_amp_repair/ for information.

1. ADDING TO YOUR COLLECTION CAN BE THRILLING.

It may, however, take you into places or situations that are unsafe. Explain how to stay safe in each of the following situations:

1. There is an ad in the newspaper or online advertising a piece you have been searching for. It is selling for far less than it is worth. When you call the number, the woman who answers says the item is still available, but someone else is interested and coming later that evening to look at it. You know if you want it you need to get it before the other buyer does. You have your own money, but your parents won’t be home until later. What should you do?

2. You collect bears and a friend collects dolls. The two of you are going to yard sales in search of your favorite collectibles. On one street there are six homes with sales, but you see Grace who always seems to beat you to the best bargains. Your friend suggests you split up in order to cover more sales before Grace gets to them. What should you do?

3. You are at a flea market. A stranger starts up a conversation about your collection. He tells you he has several great pieces in his car and invites you to go with him to see them. What should you do?

2. COLLECTING THAT GETS OUT OF CONTROL TO THE POINT WHERE YOU CANNOT STAND TO DISCARD ANYTHING IS CALLED HOARDING.

Go online at www.mayoclinic.com/health/hoarding/DS00966 to learn about the disease. Based on what you learn, answer the following questions:

What are the symptoms of hoarding?

What is the average age when hoarding usually starts?

Name three lifestyle and home remedy steps you can take if you are a hoarder.

A treasure is a thing that is greatly prized. Treasures are usually guarded and protected. Everyone collects treasure of some sort.

What are your greatest treasures?

Soul QuestComplete the following task.

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ GIRL GUARDS

How do you guard or protect those treasures?

Read Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV).

This Scripture says there are two places where treasures may be stored. Where are we to store our treasure?

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

OthersComplete at least ONE of the following tasks.

1. SHARE YOUR COLLECTION.

Set up a display for a group of children, women’s ministry or seniors’ group to view.

2. HELP A YOUNGER SIBLING, COUSIN OR FRIEND START A COLLECTION.

Try one of the following ideas:

• There are many things in nature that are free to collect. Go for a hike to find

Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV)

leaves, sticks, insects or something else that is fun and interesting. Help your friend to create a display with the items collected.

• A stamp collection is easy to start because there are so many beautiful stamps that show up in your mailbox.

All you need to help a younger friend get started are some old envelopes with stamps. Ask friends and neighborhood businesses to save envelopes for you. Check with the post office to see if they have any suggestions or kits for beginners.

Log on to http://about.usps.com/corporate-social-responsibility/stamp-collecting.htm#asc1 for hints about starting a stamp collection. Help your friend create a way to store their new collection.

• Choose another item that interests you or you are familiar with and help the child start a collection. Include a way to store or display the collection.

3. COLLECTIONS ARE BETTER WHEN YOU CAN ENJOY THEM WITH OTHERS.

Join a collectors club. If there is not one in your area that focuses on your collectible, start a group of your own.

What are the ethics involved with collecting as a hobby?

Write a personal code of ethics that you will use. If you have trouble knowing what you should include, try to imagine how you would want other collectors to treat you and your property. You can log on to www.amfed.org/ethics.htm to see a sample Code of Ethics.

Does it matter what you do when you are trying to get a new piece for your collection? Do your actions affect others?
