IntroductionACT’sCenterforEquityinLearningandACE’sAmericanCollegeApplicationCampaign(ACAC)arecommittedtoincreasingcollegeaccessandcareerreadinessthroughthedisseminationofideas,developmentofpractices,andtechnicalassistanceforprogramimplementationthatcreatesorenhancesacollege-goingculture.Schoolsthatinvestinthecreationofthistypeofeducationalenvironmentintentionallyseektoremovebarriersthatpreventallstudentsfrompursuingpostsecondaryeducation.ThisCollegeandCareerAwarenessforElementaryandMiddleSchoolStudentsaugmentsthePre-CollegeandCareerReadinessCurriculumforStudentsandTheirFamilies(2017,2018)whichwasdesignedforprimarilyforhighschoolstudents.Feedbackfromschoolcounselorsledtothisdevelopmentofmaterialsforearliergrades.Thecurrentversionincludesactivitiesandlessonsforpre-kindergarten,kindergarten,elementaryandmiddleschoolstudents.ThenewmaterialsweredevelopedandsharedbytheCollegeFoundationofWestVirginia(CFWV)andGEARUPWashingtonState.Additionally,instructionsforintroducingstudentstothehighlyengagingonlineplatformWhyville©wereprovidedbyJenSun,PresidentofNumedeon.Whyville©isavirtualworlddesignedforchildrenasyoungas8yearsoldwhichencouragesself-directedexplorationofideas,careers,andcommunitychallenges.Includedonthebottomofeachpageisalinktofeedbacksurvey.Ifyouusethesematerials,pleaseletusknowyourthinkingaboutit. Thereareatleastfivemajorgoalsassociatedwithincreasingeducationalattainmentbeyondhighschoolasitpertainstocareerdevelopment.Theseinclude:
- Sharinginformationandbuildingawareness- Providingindividualizedadvising- Assistingwithapplicationcompletion- Engagingparentsandcommunity- Makingdecisionsandplanningahead
ItisduringtheElementarythroughMiddleSchoolyearsthatthefirstgoal-sharinginformationandbuildingawarenessabouthighereducationandcareerreadinessopportunities-isessentialandeasiestdone.Formanystudents,theideaofcollegeisnotdiscussedinthehome.Providingyoungerstudentswithanopportunitytobuildafoundationofawarenessaboutpostsecondaryeducationiscritical.Buildingenthusiasmforeducationalattainmentandanindividual’slifelongresponsibilityforcareerreadinesscanneverstartsoonenough.Theseactivitiespromoteopportunitiesforyoungerstudentstodreambigabouttheirfuturesasyoushareinformationandbuildawarenessabouthighereducationandcareerreadiness.TIMELINEFORDELIVERY

“College”isthemostcommontermusedtotalkaboutwhereyougetyoureducationafteryoufinishhighschool.Thereareotherwordsusedtodescribespecifictypesofeducationalexperiences.
Technicalschoolteachesskillsusedbyindividualsincertainjobssuchasacarmechanic,computerhardwarerepairman,restaurantchef,heatandairconditioningrepairman.Technicalschoolsprovideahands-onenvironmentthatpreparesyoutoworkinthesetypesofjobs.Militarytrainingisconsideredtechnicalschooltraining.
Communitycollegeprovides2-yeardegreesincertainareasofstudyliketechnicalschools.Manycommunitycollegesprepareyoutotransfertoa4yearcollegeoruniversityforfurtherstudy.
Auniversityisusuallyconsidereddifferentfromacollegebecauseofthemanydifferentlevelsofeducationthatyoucancomplete.

Youngerstudentactivities
1. UseHalloweenasanopportunitytohaveyoungerstudentscometoschooldressedastheperson/actionfigure/hero/shero/jobtheywanttohavewhentheygrowup.Usethisasa“showandtell”whereeachstudenthasanopportunitytotellwho/whattheircostumerepresentsandwhythisinspiresthem.
2. Eachstudentisrequestedtobringinapictureofsomeone
performingajobthatappealstothestudent.Thepictureshouldbe5-8inchestalland3-4inchesinwidth)andbecutfromamagazine,newspaper,orprintedoffacomputer.Thestudentsareaskedtoworktogetherandputfiguresdoingsimilarworktogetherinagrouponabulletinboard.Eachgroupingshouldcomeupwithwordsorphrasesthatdescribethepicturesintheirgroup,tellingwhytheworkissimilar.

Thesoonerthislessonisapproached,thegreatertheimpact.Thereareavarietyofwaystoinfluencestudentstosavemoneyforcollege,evenasearlyaselementaryschool.OneofthemorevisiblewaysistoaskstudentstoalwaysthinkaboutANYmoneyortalenttheyhaveasbelongingtooneof3pots:1pottodosomethingforsomeoneelse(tithing,giftsforfamilyorfriends,acharity,etc.);1pottodosomethingforthemselves(buyingasmallrewardnoworsavingtowardsabiggerone);and1potfortheirfuture(specificallycollege).Thegoalistohavestudentsbegintoseethattheycaninfluencetheirindependencewhiledoinggoodforothers.So–ifastudentreceivesanallowance,itissomethingconcretetheycandividebythree(3)andputfundsinappropriatejars/envelopes.Inthecaseofstudentswhodonotreceivearegularallowance,theyshoulddivideANYmoneytheyreceive(birthdays,holidays,chores,shopping,candyfunds,etc.)into3jars/envelopes,etc.Attheendofonemonth,theycanseeexactlyhowtheirmoneyfornow,forsomeoneelse,andfortheirfutureisgrowingordisappearing.Agreatquestiontoaskstudentswhoagreetoworkonthisis:Ifyouputinapotfornow–doyourememberwhatyouboughtwithit?Ifyouputinapotfordoinggoodforothers–howmuchdoyouhaveandhowmuchdoyouthinkwillmakeadifferenceinthelivesofothers?Finally,ifyouputmoneyinapotforthefuture(collegefund),howmuchdoyouthinkyoucansaveinayear?Thisisanespeciallyimportantlessontosharewithallstudentsandespeciallystudentsfromlow-incomefamilies.Itisimportantnottosetthisupasacompetitionbutapersonalcommitmenttounderstandinghowtheyvaluemoney.Forolderstudents,thissameactivitycanbeanopportunityfordeeperlearning.Studentscanbesupportedincreatingasavingsaccountorcontributingtoa529Planthatofficiallysupportstheircollegesavings.

Studentshaveaccesstovaryingtoolsforexploringcareerawareness.Itcanbeassimpleasfindinganddiscussingpicturesinmagazinesthatreflecttheidealsthatayoungpersonhasabouttheir“grown-upselves”oritcanbeasrich,engaging,andcomplexasWhyville.com–avirtualcommunityforstudentstoearnclamsandpearlsthatallowthemtonavigatehealthcareconcerns,environmentaltasks,anddeepentheirunderstandingofcareers.Careerawarenessisnotdependentonusingacomputerbutthereisnodoubt,theabilityofallstudentstobecomfortableandnimbleinavirtualenvironmentiscriticaltotheirfuture.YourdecisiontouseWhyville.comasatoolforthisworkisdependentuponyourschool,itsresources,andyourcomfort.Thatbeingsaid,therearecompellingreasonstoexplorethisresource.
