Edition No. 1
Dear Families, Students and Community Members,
Welcome to the
2017 school year, and a special welcome
to all of our 190 Year 7 students and 30 new
students at other year levels who have joined
us this year. I hope
everyone had a fantastic holiday break
with family and friends and I look forward to a positive year ahead.
We have seen a significant increase in our Year 7
enrolments over the last few years and this year we have our largest group ever, making a Middle School of close to
500 students. Our total school enrolment is approximately
780 students.
Strengthening Culture of Achievement
My ongoing mantra to everyone here has been to set ‘High
Expectations’ in everything we do, high expectations of our own performance and of those we influence, whether we
are student, teacher or parent. Underpinning this focus are
our core values of Personal Best, Integrity, Respect and Responsibility. It is so important that they continue to be
evident in how we all work together throughout the year.
As a school community focused on achieving the best possible outcomes for all of our students, we need to
continually reflect and seek improvement in everything we do. This year marks the beginning of our new Strategic Plan
(2017-2020) with the following Goals and Key
Improvement Strategies:
Goals:
Student Achievement – to improve the VCE all study
score to above the state and to maximise student learning
growth for all students 7-12 across all learning areas.
Student Engagement – to develop confident and
engaged students who have an authentic voice in planning
their own learning pathway in and beyond school.
Student Wellbeing – to empower confident, healthy and
resilient students.
A number of key improvement strategies have
been planned over the next four year period aimed at achieving these goals and the specific targets set.
These include:
Develop precision in teacher practice using agreed
lesson structures and challenging learning tasks that
reflect high expectations for student learning and strengthen feedback and coaching for staff.
Develop and embed rigorous, reliable and well
differentiated assessment practices to support quality
learning outcomes for all students.
Develop and implement processes and practices to
strengthen transition into, through and beyond the
school.
Plan learning sequences
and activities that strengthen
authentic student voice and self-directed learning.
Build student resilience
and identify and respond to
the needs of specific groups or individual students through a
documented and implemented
wellbeing approach.
Facility Development
Our new Performing Arts Centre and Canteen are both now
in operation and I am sure everyone will appreciate and enjoy these fantastic new facilities. We don’t have our
school hall, with it being demolished over the last few weeks and now the site is being prepared for the
construction of our new competition sized netball and
basketball stadium which is to be built over Terms 1, 2 and 3. This is very exciting for the College but it does mean we
will be without a large indoor facility until Term 4. However, we were able to fit the whole school into the Year 7
Learning Centre to have a whole school assembly on
Monday and, while cosy, it worked well. This will also be the venue for our whole school leadership induction
assembly on Monday 20 February which parents of our 2017 student leaders will be invited.

I am continuing to work with the City of Kingston on the
potential expansion of our stadium to two or three courts. The process has now been formalised with Kingston
Council engaging MINX architecture to prepare a feasibility report into the plans and costings of the additional courts
and provision of 100 car parks to service the three courts.
A consultant has also been employed to determine a suitable management plan and prepare a business plan for
the expanded stadium.

Uniform and Jewellery
Our uniform is a very important part of the image we project of our College community and therefore I expect
all students to wear their uniform correctly and with pride
to, from and at school. I would like to congratulate the majority of students who have started off the year in a
positive way in the wearing of the correct College uniform and I thank all parents for your support with this. A
reminder that all boys should be wearing the short sleeve
business shirt with College logo.
For PE and Sport, a reminder that students are required to
be sunsmart and wear a broad brimmed or bucket hat
when participating in outdoor activities. If they don’t bring a hat, they will be given one from our PE department to
wear for the lesson. All students must also be using the official Mordialloc College school bag available from
Dobson’s. A reminder of the rules outlined in the College
uniform policy regarding jewellery. Jewellery is not to be worn apart from a wristwatch and a plain stud or sleeper
for students with pierced ears. Piercing of other body parts must not be visible.

From September to April in Victoria, when average UV Index
levels reach 3 and above. Check the SunSmart UV Alert every
day and protect your skin during the sun protection times
(when UV levels are 3 or above), even when you are in the sun
for short periods.
The UV Alert is available as a SunSmart app, on the SunSmart
website, and in the weather section of the daily newspapers.
During the sun protection times, use a combination of the five
SunSmart steps:
Slip on sun clothing that covers as much of your body as
possible.
Slop on SPF 30 or higher broad spectrum, water resistant
sunscreen liberally at least 20 minutes before sun exposure.
Reapply every two hours when outdoors.
Slap on a broad brimmed hat that shades your face, neck
and ears.
Seek shade.
Slide on sunglasses that meet the Australian Standard
AS/NZS 1067:2003.

World Challenge
Congratulations to the group of students who travelled to
Vietnam for four weeks at the end of last year with Ms Leppin. The trip provided a fantastic opportunity for students to
achieve personal and team goals and develop valuable skills for later life, such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving
and communication. This opportunity will again be available for our students in 2018, to travel to Cambodia. Current Year 9
and 10 students will hear more about this soon.
College Council Elections
College Council elections are approaching. Further information
will be in the newsletter next week and nomination forms available from Reception. Please give some thought to
contributing to the College by participating in College council – there are generally two evening meetings per term, and it can
be very rewarding. College Council decides, to a large extent, the policies and direction the College takes and is therefore a
most important part of the College Community.
I am proud to be the Principal of Mordialloc College and I hope
you are all proud to be a part of the Mordialloc College community. I am looking forward to the year ahead and hope
that all students make the most of the opportunities and challenges that are presented to them. Please don’t hesitate
to contact me.
