Good Chemistry Michael Russell, Ph.D., makes the complex compelling to a wide range of students.

With a doctorate in chemistry from Dartmouth College, Michael Rus-sell could be the kind of instructor who lectures as far above the heads of his students as is the summit of the namesake mountain seen from the MHCC campus. However, he views his role as “the guide on the side, not the sage on the stage.”

Since joining the MHCC faculty in 1997, he has earned a reputation for making chemistry equally inter-esting and exciting to the serious chemistry major and to the skeptical student taking an introductory class in a subject they may be dreading.

“I like to think of myself as an explorer,” says Russell, “and there are a lot of fascinating conceptual and physical summits to explore in chemistry.”

He excels at taking students along on the expedition while mixing knowledge, commitment, compas-sion and cutting-edge technology into his courses. He is able to make his students see and appreciate the fact that everything—and every-one—in our lives involves chemistry in some form.

“It’s important to have versatility in how you teach, to accommodate dif-ferent learning styles,” says Russell. “I try to offer multiple options for my courses, from traditional lecture to digital podcasting to online video screencasts. We even have a mo-bile platform version. But the most important thing is to be compas-sionate. I’m teaching people from

all walks of life, all different back-grounds. I try to tailor my teaching to each individual student to see what connects. It can be draining some-times, but I love it. And the chemical reaction from vast amounts of caf-feine always helps!”

But what he teaches isn’t just eye-opening; it can lead students to many different (and rewarding) professions.

“Each year the list of high-paying degrees is published,” Russell points out, “and chemistry is always near the top. MHCC has a strong commitment to student success, and chemistry can lead students to many different professions.”

Russell sees the two most exciting areas of current research in chemistry

spanning that wide range of discovery: biochemistry and renewable energy.

“These areas are relevant and excit-ing,” says Russell, who is after an equally positive if more personal chemical reaction in his courses: “My goal as a teacher is for all my students to find life, career and economic happiness. That’s my victory.”

That commitment to student suc-cess—and to Gresham—must come naturally to him. His father, Ronald Russell, and his mother, Beverly Russell, each served on the MHCC District board of education and two local middle schools are named for family members. With that legacy, one might say that Russell’s bonds with the College and community are as enduring as sodium plus chlorine—one of the strongest chemical bonds in nature. And, that combination also describes his character: valuable, un-pretentious and willing to help people. In other words, salt of the earth.

be readyNew Programs, New Opportunities, Good Jobs Innovative new degree and certificate programs will put even more MHCC students on the road to bright futures.

Education and opportunity are never static at Mt. Hood Community College, and when we see one of the latter, we look for new ways to offer more of the former. MHCC responds to the needs of our community by preparing graduates for promising careers. Two new avenues for success under development at MHCC are perfect examples of this forward-thinking commitment.

“While the United States is the most technologically advanced na-tion in the world, most of us do not realize just how vulnerable we are. The widespread use of everything computer and everything mo-bile has put us at great risk,” says Wayne Machuca, Ph.D., MHCC computer information systems/Web instructor.

The personal, economic and na-tional security risks range from the annoying (such as someone hack-ing your medical records or bank account) to the life-threatening (such as a terrorist attack on the power grid or air traffic control). Because of these concerns, Presi-dent Barack Obama established the National Initiative for Cybersecu-rity—which in turn led, through multiple agencies bearing enough acronyms to supply a major Scrab-ble tournament, to a huge variety of resources and opportunities for cybersecurity education.

Mattoon, who designed the pro-gram, hopes to welcome 24 to 26 students per class and expects gradu-ates to start in the $12- to $20-per hour range.

SeCuRing The fuTuRePaul Morris and Wayne Machuca

“That was the aha! moment,” says Machuca. “We saw what the future held, and we began developing a new academic program that we anticipate will become the most advanced technology degree MHCC has ever offered.”

The two-year Networking and Cybersecurity degree that Machuca has developed, along with MHCC instructor and colleague Paul Morris, is in the final stages of approval, and barring any hitches will be offered in September of this year.

Forward-thinking also serves as the driving force for another proposed program at MHCC, Light Repair and Maintenance Certification. This three-term program (also in the final rounds of approval and planned to begin in the winter of 2013) prepares students for entry-level positions in automotive services and light repair. It’s a fast, flexible program that gets people into the job market while bypassing general education requirements and at a cost to the student that is much less than at many other schools.

“This program answers a need for students and employers,” says Dennis Mattoon, dean of instruc-tion in MHCC’s Industrial Technol-ogy department. “Many students

This is a group of students who came from situations in which they were underprepared for college-level learning, yet with the AVID program, eight of 10 of them moved forward to the next term at MHCC. Those are very good results.”

Eventually, there will be an AVID Center for Students at MHCC, and the impact should be exceptional.

“AVID at MHCC now is a profes-sional development learning community, dedicated to teaching high-engagement learning strate-gies,” says MHCC developmental writing instructor Mary Kelly-Klein. “This is a terrific platform for students to work together and apply critical thinking skills. And teachers also work together across courses—reading and writ-ing, for example—as they instill

Avid Teachers, Avid LearnersAVID, an international program preparing students for college, is blossoming at MHCC.

Some 30 years ago an educator named Mary Catherine Swanson, seeing the many unmet needs of her underserved, under-represent-ed, under-everythinged students, created a new way of preparing those students (and inspiring their teachers) for college readiness and eventual success in a global society. Her program, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), is now serving more than 450,000 students, from fourth-grade to college, in 4,800 schools across America and 16 countries.

At the college level, AVID is de-signed to increase learning, bolster student persistence and power college graduation and success in careers and life.

“MHCC is the first college in Oregon to adopt the AVID post-secondary program,” says Christie Plinski, vice president of Instruc-tion at MHCC. “Our first steps

complementary skills in a cohort of AVID students.”

“This is the most positive training I’ve had as a teacher,” adds MHCC English instructor and AVID par-ticipant Michele Hampton. “We’re learning new strategies to keep the whole group motivated and learn-ing. Students coalesce into a team that works together and supports each other. From the teacher’s per-spective, AVID can be something as simple as telling students your goals for the class clearly and on the first day, or as complex as transforming an entire campus community to reflect the AVID philosophy.”

On the bottom line, AVID at MHCC is another reflection of what has always been the heart and soul of the College: the power of student-focused education to create better, richer, fuller lives.

The RighT TRaining Produces Leatherman Quality Tools

The training-to-work program which resulted provides four days of training in Manufacturing Foundations and leads to OSHA 10 completion—a universal, industry recognized safe-manufacturing credential. Those who successfully complete the new program are then qualified and prepared to start work at the Leatherman production facility.

“This is a great opportunity for us to help provide both Leatherman-specific training and industry-spe-cific training that reaches beyond a single employer,” says Robert Weinman, MHCC’s business and industry workforce training coordi-nator. “From MHCC’s perspective, we wanted to develop a program

In 2010, Leatherman called upon the Portland office of Aerotek, a worldwide staffing agency, to recruit a production team for the Leatherman manufacturing facility. Aerotek soon partnered with MHCC and WorkSource Oregon to recruit new employees and develop a customized training program that would prepare those prospects for high-volume, high-quality

Sometimes the planets, or at least the pliers, blades and tools, align perfectly—like the fact that Tim Leatherman, former English teacher and helicopter mechanic, inventor and founder of world-famous Leatherman multi-tools, had a cool, outdoorsy name. Whifflehimper Tools may not have had the same success with sportsmen, adventurers, workers and the military.

But Oregon-based Leatherman Tool Group has been exceptionally successful since the iconic multi-tool (all-in-one pliers, knives, screwdrivers, saw blades, etc.) first appeared three decades ago. Today, there are 46 different Leatherman products, sold in 82 countries around the world. The company employs some 400 people, and the manufacturing happens right here in Portland.

And that manufacturing still happens under Tim Leatherman’s original philosophy: Make great products, make them on time and at top-quality, add value and create a great place to work. A typical tool manufactured at Leatherman will require 300 different processes to produce, and this precise production plus the company’s devotion to quality require special employees—who aren’t always easy to find, even in an economic recession.

Tools for Successbe trained

“We understood that the require-ment was based on worker safety,” says Aerotek’s Sarah Hovdey, “but we were also familiar with MHCC’s expertise in workplace training, and we wondered if together we could develop a training program and certification that would satisfy Leatherman’s requirements and open the door to new employees.”

Indeed they could—what has emerged from the Aerotek partner-ship with MHCC and WorkSource Oregon is a comprehensive recruit-ment process that involves initial screening, cognitive and physical assessment and several interviews before the candidates can attend the training.

Like a Leatherman tool, all pieces have fallen perfectly into place.

Acquiring those skills has led to the hiring of more than 30 new employees at the Leatherman site.

that was of value to Aerotek and Leatherman, but that included in-dustry recognized skill assessments and credentials.”

In addition to earning the OSHA 10 completion, all participants com-plete the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC). The NCRC is a nationally recognized skills assess-ment tool that ranks an individual’s abilities in math, reading and locat-ing information. The NCRC is now being implemented into programs in at least 35 states.

“The NCRC is now something we encourage our regular employees to obtain for future opportunities at Leatherman as well as external can-didates who apply for an open posi-tion,” Leatherman’s Potts explains. “This test will help us better assess the skill levels of these individuals and allow us to be more informed before we hire.”

As the company hoping to provide workers to Leatherman, Aerotek had to address what was a substantial, if well-intentioned, barrier to employ-ment: Leatherman Tool’s require-ment for six months or more of past production experience.

One such success story is Michael Hernandez, who went through the training and now has a good job at Leatherman. He says, “I was work-ing part-time in a shoe store and wanted something better. If you want to go into manufacturing, this program is the way to do it. I learned the skills I needed quickly and went to work the following week. Leatherman is a great place to work and I hope to be here a long time.”

With a little help from MHCC—part of the College’s standing commitment to the community—Hernandez and the other new employees will contribute to a safer production environment and higher production rates for Leatherman, and are aligned to advance quickly in their career goals.
