Cover + contents
What works well?I think that both the front cover and the contents page work well, separately and together, because of the colour schemes. What doesn’t work well?I think that the front cover’s writing layout doesn’t work that well. It looks good, but I think I may have made the boxes too thick and too close together. What was easy? The front cover was easier than the contents page, just because the format and layout was a lot easier. What was hard? The contents page was hard because I kept changing my mind. It had to be in a perfect column otherwise the contents wouldn’t work well. What have you learnt? That designing magazines and contents pages aren’t as easy as you think. They require lots of thought into the design and how they will be laid out so that it is attractive and easy to read. What would you change?Probably tweak them a bit more and make them a bit more professional looking. I rushed the contents a bit because I couldn’t decide. What other magazines would you compare it to?Any other college magazine, there is no specific one I would compare it to.
EVALUATION
Mast head logoAt the top left to show that it is an identifier of the magazine. “City” features a ‘descender’ which is a y that goes below the x-height of a letter. It flows nicely and makes it interesting.
The articlesThe colours , red, purple and yellow, emphasize the house style of the magazine
Fonts used: Arial and Orator Std. Arial is bold and is the body copy (main text) while Orator Std is more lighter
Underneath the cover lines/titles there are captions that give more insight into the article
There is a “gutter”, the vertical space between columns, that lets the contents page have some columns and flow nicely.
Headline/headings of the features and the regulars. There is a distinct difference between the regulars and the features, as the features have writing about the articles specifically.
Pull-quotes to entice the reader to read the articles in the magazine.
All fonts are sans-serif on the contents page.
White space around the contents as it flows well.
Unjustified columns for the descriptions of articles.
