A Place for the ‘Stranger’
I have referred regularly in this Newsletter
and on other occasions to the central
function that our Journey Document has
assumed in directing activity and thinking
at the College in recent years. It’s a clear
and unequivocal statement of the five
characteristics we aspire to engender in
the typical graduate of this school. The fifth
of these characteristics has been acutely in
my thinking in recent times as the Church
celebrated Migrant and Refugee Week.
Tomorrow’s gentleman recognises and values the ‘other’ in his life
For many of us, it is possible to live a
relatively unchallenged lifestyle. By
adopting popular beliefs and dominant
cultural values, by being selective about
the media with which we engage and by
surrounding ourselves with like-minded
people we can avoid addressing the
difficult questions which are posed by
the existence of the ‘other’. While this
may be appealing in some superficial
way, it is not the position of comfort and
self-assuredness to which our Christian
faith calls us. As I stated with reference
to our fence display earlier this year
protesting the High Court decision to allow

asylum seekers to be returned to Nauru,
indifference and silence often amount
to complicity.
In a missive on the subject last year,
Pope Francis outlined the nature of the
issue and the imperative which exists
for all people of goodwill when he wrote:
Refugees and people fleeing from
their homes challenge individuals and
communities, and their traditional
ways of life; at times they upset the
cultural and social horizons which they
encounter. Increasingly, these victims of
violence and poverty are exploited on
their journey. If they survive the abuses
and hardships of the journey, they then
have to face latent suspicions and fear…
Today, the Gospel of mercy troubles our
consciences and prevents us from taking
the suffering of others for granted…God’s
fatherly care extends to everyone but is
particularly concerned for the needs of
those who are wounded, weary or ill.
Whether the ‘other’ in our lives is the
refugee or someone else who is afflicted
by physical, moral or spiritual poverty, we
should recognise the opportunities that
interacting with them present for a better
understanding of ourselves. Our existence
as a school in the tradition of Blessed
Edmund Rice calls us to seek Justice and
stand in solidarity with those who are
disadvantaged. I thank all of those families
who support our attempts to develop
young men who embrace the challenge
of the ‘other’ with compassion rather
than fear.

ReflectionsDear Lord
We pray for all refugees and asylum seekers
who have taken enormous risks to cross land
and ocean to seek a better life for themselves
and their loved ones. Be their help and protect
them in their pursuit of safety and peace.
We pray for families who have been separated
by war and conflict, by circumstances and by
the cost of relocation. Move in the hearts of
our leaders and policy makers to increase the
opportunity for families to be reunited.
We pray for those arriving in Australia from
places of conflict and oppression. May we
remember that we are all one in you, and
together foster a culture of encounter where
we can learn and share in the gifts of giving
and receiving.
Live Jesus in our hearts.
Forever.
Amen.

Year 7 football winEarlier this term CBC competed in the annual Year 7 Dockers Shield
football carnival. Due to the enormous amount of talent amongst the
group, we entered the competition with two teams - an A and B side.
The teams produced some outstanding performances. CBC A finished
the day undefeated in top position with CBC B also doing very well by
finishing fifth.
After winning the carnival, CBC advanced to the Grand Final,
playing against La Salle, Mandurah Catholic and Emmanuel who are
the respective winners of the North, South West and South East
competition.
CBC had a great start to the day with a victory against Mandurah and
followed it up with a win against Emmanuel. The final game was against
La Salle, who had also breezed through their first two games with
convincing wins. This meant the winner of the game would take
home the shield.
The boys were very excited and went into the game with a lot of
confidence. La Salle controlled the first half of football and went into
half time with a 10 point lead. CBC A team was not playing the footy
they had played all through the competition and needed to lift their
game, and that is exactly what they did. The boys dominated the second
half, playing great team football to secure a 13 point win. It was an
excellent effort and it was great to see the passion and dedication all
the boys showed for their College. The football future at CBC looks to
be very bright.

Black Dog on a Lead
On Sunday 16 October join the Black Dog on a Lead walk, raising money for Headspace while getting people to talk openly about
depression or ‘the black dog’ within our community.
Almost half (45.5%) of the total population experience a mental health disorder at some point in their life and although you may be one
of the lucky ones, there is a good chance that someone you LOVE, is or will be effected.
In Australia, eight lives are lost every day as a result of suicide and it is the number one cause of deaths for Australians aged 15 to 44.
Indigenous communities are up to eight times more likely to take their own life than non-Indigenous Australians and we currently have
the highest rate of suicide in the world for young Indigenous males.
We are ALL in this together and no one should have to suffer in silence.
To register for the walk click the link www.mycause.com.au/events/blackdogonalead.
Alternately if you’d like to avoid the walking bit and still support Headspace you can donate by sponsoring Mrs Petrina Brewer
at the following link: www.mycause.com.au/page/134220/black-dog-on-a-lead-petrina-richmond.

Safeguarding Protective Behaviours Parent Workshops
Child Protection Week
One way in which parents can assist in increasing their child’s safety is by teaching them the protective behaviours program and as such we strongly recommend all parents attend one of the workshops. These workshops have been designed to teach parents and carers how to increase the personal safety of their children. Whilst there are many ways of talking to children about their personal safety, it is important that we do not scare them or leave them feeling unsafe, afraid or disempowered. Protective Behaviours provides children with strategies to keep themselves safe and cope with situations that threaten their well being and personal safety. The program empowers the individual with the right to feel safe and sets out ways in which they can gain the appropriate help when they are not feeling safe.
Whilst the Safeguarding Project is working hard throughout the Perth Catholic Archdiocese, we all must play our part to protect children and keep them safe. During Child Protection Week, the Safeguarding Office in partnership with Protective Behaviours WA will be hosting a series of Protective Behaviours Workshops.
This workshop is an adult training session and is not suitable for children to attend, thank you for your co-operation.
This workshop has been provided complimentary free of charge
