* CPE and EE require ENGE 1104. AE, ME, and OE require ENGE 1114. All other majors will accept either class.

• Applicants must have a minimum 2.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA.

• Applicants with a minimum 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA are guaranteed their first choice major.

• Applicants below a 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA will be rank ordered according to GPA and placed in their first, second, or third choice based on space availability.

• Construction Engineering and Management requires students to complete a separate application process (only available in February) and students with a minimum 3.0 overall GPA are not guaranteed admission to this department.

What is Materials Science and Engineering?

What is Materials Science and Engineering?

• Exploring and understanding the spectrum of various materials: metals, ceramics, polymers (plastics), semiconductors, microelectronics, biomaterials and combinations of materials called composites.

• The goal of materials science is to enable the scientist and engineer to design, select, and use materials for specific applications and to develop new materials for future applications. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/tech/making-stuff.html#making-stuff

What is Materials Science and Engineering? What is Materials Science and Engineering?

• Investigate the relationships that exist between structure and properties of materials.

• Design or engineer the structure of a material to produce a desired set of properties.

• Classes of materials include: metals, ceramics, polymers (plastics), semiconductors, biomaterials and combinations of materials called composites.

• Properties of interest include: mechanical, electrical, thermal, magnetic, optical and corrosion.

• Most fields of work or study have a bit of MSE in them, so MSE’s work closely with engineers from all other disciplines.

What do MSE students do?What do MSE students do?

• They . . . .

• Design and invent new materials for emerging applications

• Develop new processes for manufacturing materials

• Relate structure and properties to processing methods

• Work on teams to invent the future

• Develop their ideas from the nanoscale up!

• They research, publish, travel, study abroad

• And so much more…
