n any given night at a UH Warrior men’s volleyball match, it quickly becomes evident that the player wearing the number 10 jersey possesses a special skill set and mastery of the game with thunderous, high-flying spikes. In fact, for the second consecutive season, Jonas Umlauft was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American First Team and for the second consecutive year, led the nation in kills. What is unknown to most is that Umlauft is equally as talented in the classroom as an electrical engineering major. His dominance on-court is matched in the classroom as Umlauft carries a current GPA of 3.93 in what is traditionally known as the most difficult area in engineering. In fact, he has already taken junior level classes and may be able to complete his undergraduate degree in three and a half years. What is refreshing about Umlauft is that he does not fit the mold of the stereotypical athlete. After a stellar four-year career in volleyball at Landschulheim Kempfenhausen High School in Stamberg, Germany, including winning the 2008 German National Championship, Umlauft could have easily transitioned to a successful professional career in Europe. Instead, he chose to come to the United States and to the UH Ma - noa to study electrical engineering. “I came to the U.S. to combine academics and athletics as a wayto challenge my brain, which would not have been possible hadI stayed,” said Umlauft. “Playing professionally is still an optionafter I graduate, but it’s not my favorite thing to pursue.”

What Umlauft would like to purse is a career in electricalengineering back in Germany, where he left a lot of broken itemsand gadgets around his parents’ home in Stadtbergen. He creditshis early interest in engineering to a fascination with disassemblingthings. Luckily for the Umlauft household, his father Juergan wasan electrical engineer and could piece together the results of hisson’s curiosity.

“I had a lot of fun taking things apart to see how they worked, butafter I reassembled them, they wouldn’t work,” he said. “I was tired ofbreaking things, so I decided to learn how things worked.”

His need to understand how things work, combined with hishobby of flying radio controlled model airplanes, led Umlauft toelectrical engineering.

“I usually bought assembled sets, so there was not muchto modify in terms of the aerodynamics,” he said. “So foroptimization purposes, I focused on the electrical components likethe engine, controller and receiver.”

“For me, design is the most interesting part of EE because youhave the most freedom to solve a problem ‘your way,’” he added.“You have a lot of variables to take into account and you see whattradeoffs engineers in the real world are facing.”

For Umlauft, the key to success on the court and in theclassroom, despite the rigors of practice, matches and travel, is toapproach classes with the same mindset of treating every drill inpractice as though it were the championship match.

Electrical Engineering Assistant Professor Aaron Ohta, one ofUmlauft’s instructors, is impressed by his conscientiousness.“Although he must adhere to a tough physical training schedule,and travels frequently for road games,he has still managed to completeall of his assignments,” saidOhta. “In class, he is attentive,and asks questions thatdemonstrate his abilityto quickly grasp conceptsin a difficult subject likeelectrical circuits.”

In today’s complex and competitive technological world, we are beginning to see the emergence of a

new breed of engineer—one who not only understands technology, but who also possesses the essential

principals of business, innovation and entrepreneurship.

We need to look no further than Holmes Hall to see that we are prepared to meet these new demands

with our success in two competitions organized by the Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship at the

Shidler College of Business. Technologies developed by faculty and researchers at the UH Ma-noa

College of Engineering played key roles in each of the top three winning teams at the recent UH Business

Plan Competition. In the 2010 Breakthrough Innovation Challenge, teams from engineering took first

and second place honors by successfully pitching their innovations and commercial value.

And speaking of success, in this issue we are proud to feature UH Warrior men’s volleyball player

Jonas Umlauft, who is a star both on the court and in the classroom.

Finally, I’d like to welcome two new members to our engineering team: S.T.E.M. Marketing and

Public Affairs Officer Myhraliza Aala and Director of Development Robert Saarnio. I hope you have an

opportunity to meet them soon.

recognized by the Hawai‘i Council of

Engineering Societies at the 2011 Engineers

Week Banquet held this past February.

Stanley A. Tamanaha, P.E.Tamanaha, a 1966 graduatein civil engineering, waspresentedwith the 2011HCESLifetimeAchievementAward for an impressive37-year career that includedthe Naval FacilitiesEngineeringCommand(NAVFAC), Pacific Air Forces(PACAF), U.S. Pacific

Command (USPACOM) and City and Countyof Honolulu.

After a four-year stint with the U.S.Air Force in Vietnam and earning a BronzeStar for distinguished service, Tamanahareturned to Hawai`i in 1970 and spent thenext 10 years with the City and County ofHonolulu’s Departments of Public Worksand Transportation.

In 1980, he joinedNAVFACas the supervi-sory engineer and deputy resident officer incharge of construction (ROICC) at KaneoheMarineCorpsAir Station,where he receivedover36 exceptional service honors andwas selected asNAVFAC’s Pacific Engineer of the Year in 1992.After a tour as the first commander of the 945thCivil Engineer Squadron, Tamanaha wasassigned toUSPACOMandwas instrumental inthe planning anddesignof thenewheadquartersfacility before his retirement in 1993.

Tamanaha was selected as the supervisoryengineering and deputy ROICC, Middle Pacificin 1995. Under his watch, he oversaw theconstruction of $5 billion in projects, includingthe Ford Island Bridge, USPACOM Headquar-ters Building, the relocation of air wingsupport facilities from NAS Barbers Point to

MCB Hawai`i, the recapitalization of 1000Navy homes and the clean up of Kahoolawe.

Sheryl E. Nojima, PhD, P.E.Nojima, president of Gray,Hong, Nojima & Associ-ates, the state’s onlyfemale-owned smallbusiness civil engineer-ing consulting firm, waspresented with the 2011Engineer of the YearAward by the Hawai‘i

Society of Professional Engineers (HSPE).She received her BS, MBA and PhD from

UH Ma-noa, earned an MS in civil engineeringfrom UC Berkeley, and is a licensed profes-sional engineer in two disciplines – civilengineering (Hawai‘i and Oregon) andenvironmental engineering (Oregon). Nojimahas worked in both the private and publicsector in Hawai`i, including M&E Pacific, theCity and County of Honolulu, Departmentof Public Works and the UH Ma-noa Collegeof Engineering, where she served as assistantdean from 1995-2000.

Nojima is currently president of theAmericanCouncil of EngineeringCompanies ofHawai‘i andhas been amember of the boardof directors since 2004. From 2001-2003, shealso served as president of HSPE and wasinstrumental in establishing the HSPE Educa-tional Foundation, which provides tax-exemptfinancial support to future engineers throughcollege scholarships, the Fundamentals ofEngineering exam reimbursement programand the MATHCOUNTS® Competition.

Nojima is chair of the Committee onCapital Improvements for the Departmentof Education’s Office of School Facilities &Support Services Advisory Council, a memberof the College’s Civil and EnvironmentalEngineering’s Industrial Advisory Counciland is also a member of the Dean’sAdvisory Council.

Travis Hee WaiWithphenomenal academ-ics, it was clearly evident thatHCEShad an easy selectionof TravisHeeWai at its 2011Student Engineer of the YearAward. Since entering theCollege as aRegents Scholarin 2007,HeeWai hasmaintained a 3.90overall

GPA, a 3.98 in electrical engineering andhasmade the EngineeringDean’s list every semester.He graduated this pastMay and is planning toattend graduate school.

In addition to his stellar academic scores, HeeWai has also scoredbig on anumber of projects.He has worked in the Biomedical SensorsLaboratory on the development and testing ofsensors designed to detect various medical diag-nostic targets including heart attack, disease,cancer, viruses and bacteria. He collaboratedwith Professor James Yee on a Navy communi-cations network project and was involved in aproject with the University of Hawai‘i’sInfrasoundLaboratory on analyzing applicationsof infrasound (low frequency waves).

Amazingly with his hectic schedule, HeeWai has found time for himself and to helpothers. He has tutored special education stu-dents in math and coached both cross countryand track and field teams at Kalani HighSchool, his alma mater, and participated in theUH Intramural Outdoor Soccer and the Men’sIsland Soccer Organization leagues.

During the month of February, The BoeingCompany presented four engineeringprograms with checks totaling over $15,000,which included a two-day visit to the UHMa-noa College of Engineering.

During the visit, Boeing executives andngineers got to learn more about the College’sprograms with design reviews of the Aero Design,Mini Baja and Supermileage student projects.As a bonus, lead project engineers fromBoeing presented information about their newcommercial aircraft to students in the ME 213and ME 371 classes.

The Aero Design project received $4,750, the Mini Baja project received $4,400 and theSupermileage project received $2,500.

“I would like to thank Boeing for their generous gift that will benefit our mechanicalengineering students and programs,” said Mehrdad Ghasemi Nejhad, mechanical engineeringchair. “We are grateful for their long-standing support of engineering programs at UH Ma-noaand to be the recipients of their generosity.”

Later in the month, Boeing presented a check in the amount of $4,750 to ProfessorWayne Shiroma’s outstanding CubeSat program and in April, they furthered their support ofthe College by purchasing a $10,000 platinum table sponsorship at the engineering banquet.

director of development for the

College of Engineering. In his new

role, Saarnio will be responsible

for the identification, cultivation,

solicitation and stewardship of

private philanthropic gifts.

Saarnio most recently worked

on special projects for the dean of

the UH Ma-noa School of Architec-

ture and as a consulting executive

advisor to the Washington Place

Foundation. In 2008, he was named

as deputy director of the Honolulu

Academy of Arts and in 2006, he

was appointed as associate director

and historic property manager

of the Doris Duke Charitable Foun-

dation’s Shangri La estate and

museum in Honolulu.

found a great fit for our College,”

sive background in philanthropy

He has served in a number of

Second place was awarded to Renewable Water Technology LLC(RWT). Mechanical Engineering Associate Professor Weilin Quand Researcher Riley McGivern developed the technology for asolar/waste heat driven humidification-dehumidification (HDH)seawater desalination process that will eliminate the high cost, highenergy use of traditional desalinization systems. Team membersalso include Ryan Sato and Jeremy Uota.

Third place was awarded to InFLOWmation, Inc. ElectricalEngineering Assistant Professor David Garmire and Researcher JohnHirano provided the technology for a small and accurate, low-costand self-contained anemometer to measure wind speed. Team

members also include Kuenzang Dorji, Firaas Hakim, Jenna Nishitaand Josiah Nishita.

“To be successful, today’s engineer must understand technologyas well as the essential principles of business,” said Dean Crouch.“I’m pleased that our faculty and students are embracing the spiritof innovation and entrepreneurship.”

The annual competition, coordinated by the Pacific Asian Centerfor Entrepreneurship (PACE) at the Shidler College of Business, isan intense and unique learning opportunity for UH students topursue a business idea and develop their business savvy. Winnerswere awarded substantial cash prizes.

“I’m pleased to see multi-disciplinary teams shining in theBPC, said Susan Yamada, PACE executive director. “The beauty ofthe BPC is that it provides the opportunity for business students tocollaborate with scientists and researchers on real-life projects. Thisis exactly the kind of synergy that we strive for at the University.”

Sliced bread was a great invention. But ifsomeone needed indoor/outdoor surveillancein a hazardous environment or was in themarket for a safe and low environmentalimpact off-road vehicle, that slice of breadcomes up a bit short. Thanks to the innovationsof two engineering teams participating in the2010 Breakthrough Innovation Challenge,those needs might soon be addressed.

Organized by the Pacific Asian Center forEntrepreneurship (PACE) in partnership withthe College of Engineering and the William S.Richardson School of Law, the competitionchallenged UH students and faculty to pub-licize their innovations through a two-minuteYouTube video. After the last video rolled fromthe eight teams entered, UH Ma-noaengineering finished in first and secondplace, winning $1,000 and $500, respectively,to further develop their innovations.

In its 11th year, the College of Engineeringbanquet continues its tradition of success asover 600 alumni and friends were in atten-dance at the Hilton Hawaiian Village’s CoralBallroom on April 14th. Over $100,000.00was raised for student programs at the College.

This year, guests were treated to a recordnumber of student project displays in thelobby upon their arrival. Later in the evening,attendees got a spirited talk on renewableenergy in Hawai‘i by video game entrepreneurand sustainability advocate Henk Rogers,president and CEO of Blue Planet Software, Inc.and chairman of Blue Planet Foundation.Following a delicious six-course Chinesedinner, guests were entertained by the popularquestion and answer session with students,as well as the special presentation on the SolarDecathlon by members of Team Hawai‘i.

The presentation of two special awardsto engineering alumni was the highlight ofthe evening.

Kodama has been influential incoordinating UH Ma-noa fundraising effortsand community events and has beenrecognized as a driven community leader.

As an active supporter of UH Ma-noa, Mukai(BSME ’89) has been involved with EAAUHsince 1990, served as president in 1995 andhas been a member of the College of Engi-neering Development Advisory Committeesince 2006. For over 20 years, Mukai has leadand organized UH Ma-noa communityevents that have brought in over $250,000 indonations and sponsorships for the College.He is currently a director of the EngineeringAlumni Association of the University ofHawai‘i and the University of Hawai‘iAlumni Association.

The senior duo each received $1,000and additional prizes for their project,PAWT (Polygonal Airfoil Wind Turbine),the Greener Future: An InnovativeApproach to Engineering a BladelessWind Turbine, in the electrical engineeringcategory. The award was given byUnited Technologies Corporation.

Sunagawa and Middendorf placedsecond in their district fair under theHawai`i Association of IndependentSchools and were invited to competein the national competition as a topfinisher in the Hawai‘i State Science andEngineering Fair sponsored by theHawai`i Academy of Science.

Minnesota. The UH Mānoa team was alsoselected for participation in the 2011-2013competition, which includes an additional$110,000 grant.

In keeping with the UH Mānoa SmallSatellite Program’s 10-year tradition of givingits satellites Hawaiian names, this one wasnamed Ho`oponopono, “to make right,” anappropriate name given for its mission ofproviding calibration for radar stationsaround the world. Ho‘oponopono, awaitingselection by NASA for a launch date, isapproximately 30 times smaller than theprimary calibration satellite currently in orbit,which is operating 16 years past its expectedlifetime and facing imminent failure.

More than 30 students participated onthe UH Mānoa team, which was mentoredby Electrical Engineering Professor WayneShiroma, as well as by engineering teamsfrom InDyne and Northrop GrummanAerospace Systems. Additional support wasprovided by The Boeing Corporation.

UH Ma-noa Nanosatellite TeamReceives Two Awards in National Competition

A team of UH Ma-noa electrical and mechanicalengineering students won the third place andmost improved awards at the UniversityNanosat Program competition held in January.

Since 2009, the students have been apart of the joint program run by the AirForce Office of Scientific Research, Air ForceResearch Laboratory and the AmericanInstitute for Aeronautics and Astronautics,which provides a rigorous, two-year,concept-to-flight-ready spacecraft develop-ment experience to train tomorrow’s spaceprofessionals. As one of 11 schools to beselected to participate in the nationalcompetition, the UH Ma-noa team receiveda grant of $110,000.

The other ten schools in the competi-tion were Cornell University, Georgia Tech,MIT, Michigan Tech University, MissouriState University of Science and Technology,Montana State University, Santa ClaraUniversity, St. Louis University, Universityof Central Florida and the University of

The College of Engineer-ing is pleased to announcethe appointment ofMyhraliza Aala asS.T.E.M. marketing andpublic affairs officer.

Aala will be responsiblefor the college’s S.T.E.M.(Science, Technology,

Engineering and Mathematics) outreachefforts, including positioning and messaging,event coordination, enrollment management,communications and publicity.

Prior to her recent appointment, Aalaserved as associate director of new studentprograms at the University of Hawai`i atHilo, responsible for the planning, manage-ment, implementation and evaluation ofnew student orientation and transitionalprograms. Aala joined UH Hilo in 2006,after nine years at San Diego State University,where she most recently served asmanager and project coordinator for thedean of undergraduate studies.

“We are extremely pleased to have Ms.Aala on board to help spearhead our initia-tive to increase interest in S.T.E.M. and UHMānoa engineering in the schools,” saidDean Crouch. “It is evident from her pastexperience, that Ms. Aala has the ability toengage students and garner support fromthe local community and businesses.We look forward to working with her.”

Aala holds a BA in psychology and anMA in communication from San DiegoState University, and is currently workingon her doctorate of education in educationalleadership through the University ofSouthern California’s cohort program. Sheis a member of the National Associationof Student Personnel Administrators.

New S.T.E.M. MarketingOfficer Appointed

Yuriy Mikhaylov, a civil andenvironmental engineeringdoctoral student, received the2011 Bretzlaff FoundationAward in Engineering fromARCS-Honolulu and $5,000to further his research.

In light of this year’sdevastating earthquake

and tsunami in Japan, Mikhaylov’s researchon tsunami-resistant structures is now moreimportant than ever. His research involves the

design of six prototypical buildings in severallocations of varying seismicity and soil types.The buildings will be subjected to tsunamiloads in modeling studies that consider eightkinds of forces, including height and velocityof waves and debris damming, to analyze thebehavior of the structures. According toMikhaylov, the end result will be a set ofguidelines for tsunami-resistant designs thatcould be incorporated into building codes.

Mikhaylov received both his bachelor’sand master’s degrees from UH Mānoa and is

currently working as a structural designer forBaldridge and Associates Structural Engineering.In his spare time, he plays violin for theUniversity of Hawai‘i Symphony and at variousfunctions statewide.

The Achievement Rewards for CollegeScientists (ARCS) Foundation provides scholarawards to academically outstanding U.S. citizensstudying to complete degrees in science,medicine and engineering.

Mililani H.S.Students Visit Ma-noa

Last November, over 40 students fromMililani High School visited the College ofEngineering to get an insight of engineeringat the next level.

The students, from Timothy Pregana’sDesign Technology and Electronics andElectricity Technology classes, were welcomedby Director of Academic Affairs Tep Dobryand given a brief overview of the College’sadmission requirements and curriculum.Following the briefing, students got theopportunity to tour Professor Wayne Shiroma’ssmall satellite laboratory and operate themechanical arms in Assistant Professor PeterBerkelman’s robotic surgery laboratory.

“By opening your doors and showcasingyour labs, it helps my students to understandwhat you have to offer,” said Pregana. “I wantmy students who plan to pursue engineeringto select UH Ma-noa.”

Knapp, Yun RetireMechanical EngineeringProfessor Ronald H. Knappand Electrical EngineeringProfessor David Y.Y. Yunrecently retired from theCollege. Knapp joined theCollege in 1975 and Yuncame to UH Ma-noa in 1989and became a full-timefaculty member in 1992.

“We will miss thecontributions of both Ronand David in their respectivedepartments and at theCollege,” said Dean PeterCrouch. “We thank themfor their service and wishthem well.”
