    GeneralProgramRequirementsTherequirementsforgraduatedegreesfromtheCollegeofEngineeringconsistofUniversityrequirements,College requirements, and Program requirements. Refer to the degreeprogramsectionsforotherrequirements.MastersDegreeProgramsTheMastersdegree isawarded foradvancedstudybeyond thebaccalaureatedegreewithinanareaofspecialty.TheCollegeofEngineeringoffersseveralprogramsleadingtodegreesatthemasterslevel.Master of Science in Designated Engineering Field This degree is normally awarded to a MastersgraduatewhoholdsaBachelorsdegreeinthedesignatedfield.Someprogramsofferthisdegreeintwooptions:(1)thesisoption(30credits),and(2)nonthesisoption(30credits).MasterofScience inEngineeringScience Thisprogram isdesignedtomeettheneedsofstudentswhowish topursuean interdisciplinary courseof studyand research. Thisdegree is individually tailored tostudentneeds.Someprogramsofferthisdegreeintwooptions:(1)thesisoption(30credits),and(2)nonthesisoption(30credits).MasterofDesignatedDiscipline Thisdegree isnormally awarded to aMasters graduatewhohas anundergraduatedegreeinthedisciplineandwhofollowsanallcourseworkprogramoraprojectprogram. CollegeofEngineeringRequirementsforMastersDegree

    1. Athesisprogrammustcontainaminimumof24credithoursofcourseworkandaminimumof6credithoursofthesis.(Ifastudenttransfersfromathesisprogramtoanallcourseworkprogram,nothesishoursmaybetransferred,convertedorcountedtowardthedegree.)

    2. Nonthesisprogramrequirementsvaryaccordingtodepartmentbutmustcontainaminimumof30creditsofapprovedcoursework.

    3. Studentsmustmaintain an overall grade point average of 3.00. No grade below Cwill beacceptedinagraduateprogram.Ifastudentsaveragefallsbelow3.00,thestudentwillbeplacedonprobation.

    4. Mostprogramsrequirestudentstopassafinaloralorwrittencomprehensiveexaminationpriorto receiving the degree. These examinations are arranged and administered by the studentsdepartment.

    AcceleratedProgramsLeadingtoAcceleratedBachelorsandMastersDegreesStudentswhoareclearlyinterestedingraduatestudyareinvitedtopursueanacceleratedprogramleadingto aBachelorsDegree andMastersdegree in theCollegeof Engineering. Students in theAcceleratedProgrammay apply up to 12 credit hours of coursework, whichmust be approved by the GraduateProgramCoordinator,tocounttowardsbothdegrees.Studentsapplyforadmissiontothisprogramthroughtheiradvisors,whoshouldbeconsultedregardingadditional requirements. Several factors, which vary by academic department, are considered foradmission.However,allapplicantsmusthaveaminimumGPAofatleast3.00.DoctoralDegreeProgramsTheDoctorofPhilosophydegree isawarded in recognitionofdemonstrated scholarly competenceandability to conduct and report original and significant research. Unlike the baccalaureate andMastersdegrees, the Ph.D. degree cannot be earned by an accumulation of course credits over a period ofresidence alone. After adequate fundamental preparation to gain competence, the student mustdemonstrate research capability through completion of an authoritative investigation in the chosen

    engineering field, culminating in a written dissertation. The dissertation must demonstrate that thestudentpossessestheabilitytoreasonlogically,thetalentforengaginginsignificantandoriginalresearch,andtheabilitytoorganizeandpresentconclusionsinaprofessionalmanner.Doctor of Philosophy inDesignated Engineering Field This degree is awarded to students pursuing aprogram inoneof the following Engineeringdisciplines:Biomedical Engineering,Chemical Engineering,CivilEngineering,Computer Science andEngineering,ElectricalEngineering,EnvironmentalEngineering,IndustrialEngineering,andMechanicalEngineering. Students receiving thisdegreemustdemonstrateathoroughfoundationinthedesignateddiscipline.DoctorofPhilosophyinEngineeringScienceThisprogramisdesignedtomeettheneedsofstudentswhowish to pursue doctoral studies in interdisciplinary areas closely related to engineering.CollegeofEngineeringRequirementsforDoctoralDegrees

    1. SupervisoryCommittee.Anadvisorwillbeappointedbythechairoftheappropriatedepartmentorprogram foreachstudentduring the firstsemesterofregistrationat theUniversityofSouthFlorida.Theadvisorwillhelpdeterminethestudentsareaofresearchinterestandwilldelineatepreliminarycourseassignments.Attheearliestpossibledate,amajorprofessorwillbeappointedand a supervisory committee formed. This committee willmonitor the students program ofstudies and has full responsibility for conducting the students qualifying examination. TheSupervisoryCommitteeconsistsofaminimumoffivemembers.OnememberofthecommitteemustbeoutsidetheCollegeofEngineering. (Therequirementmaybewaived ifspecialreasonsexistandpriorapprovalisobtainedfromtheEngineeringAssociateDeanforAcademicAffairs.)AmajorityofthecommitteewillbefromtheCollegeofEngineering,withatleasttwodepartmentsoftheCollegerepresented.

    2. CreditHours.Aminimumof72hoursbeyondthebaccalaureatedegree,includingaminimumof

    20hoursofdissertation,andaminimumof30hoursofcoursework(excludingindependentstudyanddirectedresearch) isrequiredbytheCollege.Furtherrequirementsmaybe imposedbythecandidates doctoral program and supervisory committee. See individual programs for specificrequirements.

    3. Learning Focus. Throughout the students program of study, independent learning will be

    emphasized. For the first time in the participants career, inmost cases, the studentwill beresponsibleformasteringanewdomainofknowledgewithouttheaidoforganizedlecturesandtextbooks. The principal information source will be current literature. Such experience is anecessary preparation for a meaningful career in engineering and other fields where theprofessionalmustkeeppacewithalarge,everchangingbodyofknowledge.

    4. QualifyingExamination.Awrittenandoralqualifyingexamination,conductedbythesupervisory

    committee,willbetakenbyeachPh.D.studentassoonasasubstantialmajorityofcourseworkiscompleted.

    5. Admission to Candidacy. Students must be admitted to candidacy before they register for

    dissertation. Before admission to candidacy, students must have officially formed a Ph.D.SupervisoryCommitteeandpassedthequalifyingexaminationofparagraph4.Onceadmittedtocandidacystudentsmustenrollforaminimumof2credithourseachsemesteroftheacademicyearuntilcompletionofprogram.

    6. DissertationResearch.The studentmust carryout an investigation resulting in anoriginal and

    significantcontributiontotheknowledgeinthefieldofresearch.Therequirementofuniqueness

    means that the dissertation research will provide an important creative experience for thestudent. As the final stage of the students program, the candidatemust prepare a writtendissertation covering the research. Students in the Ph.D. programmust take an appropriatenumber of doctoral dissertation credits, but not less than 20 hours; the exact number isdeterminedbydepartmentand/or individualrequirements.Thedefenseof thedissertationwillconformtoOfficeofGraduateStudiesgeneralrules.

    7. Residency.Minimum residency requirementsmay be satisfied by completing the Universitys

    minimalrequirementattheUniversityofSouthFlorida.Anygraduateworkcountedtowardthefulfillment of the requirement for the Ph.D. degree after admission to candidacy must beaccomplishedwithin5calendaryears.

    CollaborationwithOtherCollegesandDepartmentsAdvancedstudyandresearchchallengesexistatthe interfacesbetweenengineeringandotheracademicdisciplines. Examples include surface physics and chemistry applied to semiconductor processingtechnology;semiconductorphysicsappliedtoVLSIandanalogintegratedcircuitdesign,manufactureandqualitycontrol;chemicalprocessinganditsrelationtochemicalprinciples;environmentalengineeringandchemicalidentificationofminuteimpurities;environmentalandtransportationengineeringanditsrelationto public health and public administration; water resources engineering and geohydrology; andbiomedicalengineering, tonameonlya few.TheCollege collaborateswithotheracademicunitsof theUniversity in research activities and selectively educates students to become proficient in suchinterdisciplinaryfields.

    The Biomedical Engineering Program at USF provides students with an integrated knowledge of engineering,biomedicalscienceandotherappropriatedisciplinestoallowparticipationinandadvancementoftheinterdisciplinaryfield of Biomedical Engineering.
