2014 Art Showcase

Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) is pleased to

present the first artwork booklet for student donations

from member institutions. This exceptional artwork

now decorates the CICan Secretariat office space in

the beautiful Château Laurier in Ottawa and truly brings

out the spirit of our member colleges within our walls,

in order to constantly inspire us. We are very grateful

to our members and their students for the submissions

presented last spring.

The Art Committee had received numerous excellent

submissions, and after much thought, awarded three

top prizes and three regional awards (Alberta, Ontario

and Quebec). A prize was also awarded for an inspiring

sculpture. Although many students participated, only

those that sent in their original pieces are displayed

within this publication.

We welcome you, during your next trip to Ottawa, to

visit the Secretariat to view the beautiful art pieces that

are adored and commented upon regularly by everyone

passing through our corridors.

We look forward to the next call for art and to your

future submissions in 2015.

Sincerely,

Denise Amyot

Transformations Of The Inner Self

Description

Looking deep into the subconscious, images and ideas

blur into an abstraction of forms that provoke thoughts.

This automatic drawing was created without a known

direction, tapping into the brain by replacing the rational

with spontaneity.

Biography

I have been studying visual arts at Grande Prairie

Regional College for the past two and a half years.

Recently, I have been exploring the numerous way

images can be represented in paintings and drawings

with the use of line, color, texture, form and composition.

I often relate the content of my work to philosophical

concepts that provoke thought in the viewer.

Nature’s Abstraction

Description

The objective of this design was to learn to look for

abstraction in natural and man-made forms. Utilizing

letters in individual photographs to create a larger

composition.

Biography

I’ve been in the Graphic Design program at Canadore

College for almost 2 years, and have developed my

skills, professionalism and some lifetime friendships.

Originally from Chalk River, Ontario, I spent many of

my days outdoors, on the river, in the forest, around

people. It was very easy to find things to illustrate,

paint or photograph. My time at college has brought

me to the realization that this is what I want to do for

a living and that I can do this as a career. I’m a creative

person, I really can’t see myself doing anything

but Design.

Description

The warm color palette represents passion. Aggressive,

masculine energy (red) and soft organic forms which

spread out when manipulated with water (black and

sienna) have distinct shapes, yet each compliments the

other, suggesting a sense of movement and growth

which is their unifying element.

Biography

I was raised on the Gift Lake Metis Settlement and

was a self-taught artist before becoming an art student.

I am the mother of two children and currently a full-time

student in my second year of the Bachelor of Fine Arts

University Transfer Program at Grande Prairie Regional

College. I have always had a love for art, especially

painting. In 2013, I was the recipient of the Jason Lang

Scholarship and the Genus Aboriginal Achievement

Scholarship Program. My goal is to own and operate

an art gallery specializing in Aboriginal Art.

Visual & Digital Arts

The Entangling of Spirits / Ubifish

Description

This piece is a landscape scene that is ultimately meant

to be rather ambiguous. It depicts two subjects, the

unknown fish and the unknown human, that have by some

means of fate or chance have crossed paths. It is set in a

place that can only be dreamed of upon floating islands.

There is a ruin with steps leading up to it in the middle

foreground, this adds another characteristic of unknown

prehistoric existence to ponder. This piece plays on the

ideas of destiny and spirituality and my love of fishing.

This piece is a digital painting. Created as a submission

for the first annual UBI gallery contest held by UBISOFT.

The painting was a finalist of fifteen chosen submissions

by students and was shown at the Ubisoft Toronto Studio.

Biography

Mackenzie is currently a 2nd year student in the

Visual & Digital Arts Program, Humber College. He is

in his graduating semester and is already playing a very

active role in carving out a successful artistic career.

Despite his disability of being legally blind, Mac has been

a very active participant in his artistic pursuits. The last

couple of years have especially been very fruitful. In 2012,

he had a solo exhibition in Cannington, and Williams Mill

Gallery, Ontario. Mac was also chosen as a finalist in a

prestigious art competition organized by UBISOFT and

showed in UBI Gallery, Holt Renfrew,Toronto. His work has

won numerous prizes and is in various private collections.

Dancing Pen

Description

This piece was created to convey how when an artist

holds a pen it is on longer a pen. It has become an

extension of the hand which dances across the page.

Biography

Madeleine Sibthorpe is an artist and illustrator who

creates art work in a variety of mediums. Her work

tends towards a faintly surrealist approach. Madeleine

studied at Dawson college in fine arts and is currently in

illustration and design. Madeleine began exhibiting two

years ago after painting for a charity action called artists

in bloom. Madeleine gets inspired by little things which

many other people would never stop to think about.

Description

Transformation from written text to a tactile sculpture

Agriculture biologique

Gracias a Violeta

Description

Biography

Transformation in Nature

Description

This photo is taken of the St. Clair River in Port

Lambtion, Ontario. The transformation of the St Clair

river is drastic from summer to winter but the view of

her remains incredible. On this subzero morning, even

though I was in a hurry, I took some time to enjoy the

breath taking view and had a moment of reflection.

Biography

Lorraine Kraayenbrink is enrolled in the Digital

Photography program at Lambton College, Sarnia,

Ontario. While raising three children she has decided

to pursue her passion in photography. Through her art

work she hopes to remind people that there is unnoticed

beauty in every day surroundings. Since attending the

photography program she has received a recognition

of outstanding artistic merit in the Lambton College

Bottle-Necked

Description

Bottle-Necked is a series of three slip-cast and silk-

screened bottles that explore the contradictions of

creating art in a world of conspicuous consumption.

Notions of “mass-production”, “disposable”, “knick-

knacks” and “baubles” impede artistic creation. Yet

here, the artist’s anxiety merges with clay, transforming

inhibitions and affirming the artist’s way forward.

Biography

Canadian ceramics artist Jennifer Pattinson was trained

in Global Studies (Trent University, 2005) and Education

(Lakehead University, 2006) before succumbing to her

artistic voice. In 2013, after teaching for many years, she

decided to pursue ceramics at The Haliburton School of

The Arts. Her art is the result of an ongoing exploration

of the internal struggles between a logical mind and

artistic impulse. This tension manifests itself with highly

disciplined yet simultaneously chaotic and expressive

approaches to form, texture and mark-making. Both

sculptural and functional her works moves from rough,

cracked and raw to highly refined and technical.
