The Sustainable Lab project was a

    ACSA competition to design a

    marine research and education

facility in St. Croix in the US Virgin

Islands. The main goals of the fa-

    cility were community involvement,

    education for tourists, reaching a

goal of net zero water use and us-

ing only energy produced on site.

My concept responded to this by

    grouping the buildings to create

    exterior courtyard spaces to have

a close knit community. This was

    done so that researchers could

more easily be seen and under-

stood by the locals and tourists.

    The buildings also are designed

to passively exist and use as little

energy as possible. This is done

    by using exterior shading devices,

interior heat buffer zones, and us-

ing an east/ west axis almost ex-

clusively. The little energy that was

    required would then be created

on site either by solar panels or by

    wind turbines.

    This project was difficult in

    dealing with the local conditions

and requirements but in the end

turned out to be a lot of fun to do.

    The Kinetic Events structure was

a project done in Union square inSan Francisco. The goal of the

    structure was to handle every-

day events as well as occasional

    concerts or shows. This design

    handles the multiple programmatic

goals by being able to lay flat and

    literally disappear during the day

if needed and it also can be an-

gled forward toward the square or

    backwards away from the space

depending on the need of the

user. The position shown on the

left is the open shading position.

The panels between the beamsalso have the ability to move for-

ward and backward and be inter-

changed to have lights or different

panels. The end goal of this project

for me was ultimate usability for

    many different uses.

    EAMES HOUSE MODEL

The Eames House (also known as

Case Study # 8) was built in 1949

as part of an Arts and Architecture

    magazine program to test new

    materials and concepts in modern

    housing. These concepts included

using off the shelf materials, and

    sitting lightly with the landscape.

    The Eames House is considered

the most successful of the Case

Study houses. The goal of the

model was to illustrate the standard

unit sizes used throughout on the

windows and at a different scale,

    the bays between the columns.

    This project presented various

    difficulties during the build

process that required me to learn

new build methods. I had to learn

to use the CnC, the dremel tools,

and learn the limits of the laser

cutter since some cuts were very

    thin.

Biketronics and Fablab are a man-

    ufacturing company for Harley

Davidson parts that is located in

Moscow, Idaho. This was a groupproject done with Megan Dobroth

and Caralina Julian. The goal of

our project was a new facility that

followed the guidelines of the 2030

    Challenge. When we started the

project we decided to not just

aim for the challenge goals but to

expand on them. We did this by

aiming to be net zero energy and

water and only use local materi-

als. The design of the project was

    based in two wings-

    Biketronics and Fablab. The

wanted solar orientation for eachspace determined the angles of

the labs; Fablab was more likely to

be used in the morning and

afternoon so it received an east

facing tilt and Biketronics was more

likely to be used in the afternoon to

evening hours so it received a west

facing tilt. Each lab was then divid-

ed into sections along this axis.

    The Courtyard Housing project

was done to create an interesting

    community that kept the wellness

of the residents in mind. I decided

that what this meant was the resi-

    dents needed exterior spaces to

be in and spend time in as well as

    good interior spaces. These interior

spaces had the goal of letting in

as much light as possible and let-

ting air circulate to not cause poor

    indoor air quality. The buildings

    were also designed to accomplish

their goals by using fuzzy spac-

es. These were spaces that are

both inside or outside or can be

    switched between the two.

    Design drafting and hand draw-

ings are one of the best ways to

    express architectural ideas. I have

found that hand drawing is often

the best place to start with a proj-

ect whether I am doing floor plansor going into things such as wall

details. Hand drawing can also be

very fast and ideas can flow

easily as long as you know how to

    express those ideas graphically. I

first learned how to hand draft in

four years of drafting during high

school. While I was in high school

the focus was on graphic delivery

with pencils. I didnt move on to

pens until design drafting in col-

lege. All of this has continued my

belief that hand drafting is very

important and I want to be able toalways present my ideas by hand

    drafting.

    Architecture has been something

that I have loved for most of my

life. I always enjoy go into a well

    done building and being surprised

by the quality and character of

spaces that I dont expect to bethere. A well done building is re-

ally something to behold. I think

most people could agree with that.

A great building is one that makes

    people feel some sort of

    emotional attachment whether

    positive or negative. I hope

someday I am able to accomplish

    that.
